Goal of Position
Volunteer Prep Cooks assist the Shelter Kitchen Specialist prep food to serve to our emergency shelter guests. The shelter provides a safe and dignified space for 22 women and 44 men every night. We provide housing advocacy, healthcare services, toiletry and basic clothing supplies, showers, lockers, and three meals a day. Our goal is to help our shelter guests move into safe, affordable, and stable housing as soon as possible.
Sample Volunteer Tasks
- Wash and chop ingredients according to recipe.
- Wash dishes.
- Contribute new recipe ideas to the menu.
- Honed kitchen skills are not necessary, there are a variety of tasks at different skill levels to be completed.
Timeframe
This volunteer opportunity is available...
- Tuesday through Saturday with a morning shift 9 am – 11 pm and an afternoon shift 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm
- Shifts are posted in morning and afternoon slots. When there is not a volunteer group serving lunch, volunteers are invited to stay and serve lunch to guests.
- Volunteers are required to commit 2 shifts a month.
Qualifications
Simpson Housing Services is looking for responsible, reliable, and respectful volunteers who can work comfortably in a commercial kitchen and communicate with people of diverse backgrounds. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.

Working directly with a kitchen specialist, you will gain knowledge about kitchen tools, cooking for a large group, meal prepping, and menu planning. Upon your request, we will provide a letter of recommendation for school, work, or scholarship. Volunteers gain a deeper appreciation for their lifestyle and enjoy a new network of people by meeting shelter staff and other volunteers.

- 4. Attend an orientation on Simpson Housing’s history and shelter procedures
- Sign up for a Shift
- Complete food safety training at first shift
- Commit to volunteering 4 hours a month
