The International Medical Graduate (IMG) program supports immigrant physicians through the relicensing process to help them start working in the field again while addressing Minnesota’s doctor shortage. International physicians receive career guidance, healthcare field connections and professional networking opportunities.
International Medical Graduate (IMG) Mentors will provide support to International Medical Graduates (IMG) / internationally trained physician clients. Support will vary based on the needs of the client and the knowledge, skills, and attributes of the IMG Mentor.
The IMG Mentor’s role may involve:
- Describing your career training, role, and career path.
- Providing an overview of the medical area with which the IMG Mentor is most familiar.
- Being a resource to the IMG client as questions arise about the U.S. medical system.
- Connecting the IMG client with employer partners
- Referring the IMG client to medical providers who may give informational interviews and shadowing/observership opportunities.
- Reviewing the IMG client’s residency application and making suggestions.
- Writing a letter of recommendation for the IMG client.
- Conducting practice interviews with the IMG client before residency interviews.
The location of meeting with the IMG client is flexible. It could be at IIMN, virtually, at a library, coffeeshop or another public place.
We are looking for IMG Mentors who have experience in the U.S. as physicians, nurse practitioners, or physician’s assistants (healthcare provider roles). Former IMGs who are now working as healthcare providers may also apply. We seek individuals who can provide guidance to IMG clients as they relicense and/or pursue alternate healthcare careers in Minnesota.
We will provide a training with our volunteer manager and the International Medical Graduate program manager prior to being assigned to mentor an IMG client.
