“The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee” is a musical comedy with music and lyrics by William Finn, adapted from the book by Rachel Sheinkin. A Broadway production of this popular musical was nominated for six Tony Awards, winning two. Unusual aspects in the show are created when four audience members are invited on stage to compete in the spelling bee alongside the show's six young actors, and the official announcer provides absurd usage-in-sentence examples to contestants.
