This annual fundraiser supports BrainPower in a Backpack, a student-supported community service program providing food support to students and families in need across Burnsville, Eagan and Savage. Funded by donations, BrainPower currently provides weekend food packages to more than 750 children a week during the school year in District 191 along with providing a year round pop up food pantry -- 191 Community Pantry -- serving more than 120 families twice a week.

Attendees of Bowls for BrainPower may make a free-will donation, pick out a correspondingly priced handmade pottery creation and receive a cup of soup.

Each empty bowl on display is a reminder that children in our community face empty bowls and hunger every day. The event has raised more than $100,000 to support BrainPower in a Backpack since its inception in 2009.

The goal this year is to raise $15,000. Donations to Bowls and BrainPower via District 191 are tax deductible, and all proceeds are designated to purchase food and supplies for BrainPower in a BackPack’s hunger relief programs. Online donations may be made via the GiveMN.org site in conjunction with Minnesota’s GIVE TO THE MAX DAY on November 21. Help BrainPower win a Golden Ticket!

Bowls for BrainPower is a collaboration between the Burnsville High School Art Department, ISD 191 Community Education and Burnsville High School Youth Services. BrainPower in a Backpack, which relies on Burnsville High School and BEST students and community volunteers, serves all District 191 preschool, middle, high school and elementary schools including Early Childhood Special Education, and Early Childhood Family Education and Burnsville High School.

Bowls for BrainPower is dedicated to Burnsville High School Art Teacher Tim Hammes, who believed that many people taking small actions can make a BIG difference. Tim, who passed away in March of 2016, created Bowls for BrainPower as a means to support ISD 191’s hunger project, BrainPower in a BackPack. He saw it as a way to involve students and volunteers in an art project that would make our community a better place for children.

Tim enjoyed creating beauty, and each item is a work of art. Tim received his art degree at the University of Minnesota Duluth, and achieved his Master’s in Education at the University of Minnesota. He spent his entire teaching career in ISD 191, at Burnsville Alternative High School, Nicollet and Metcalf Junior Highs, and Burnsville High School.

Bowls continues to strive to achieve Tim's vision of making a beautiful difference through art..
