Who We Are
- Individuality. Valuing a set of characteristics unique to one’s self, and encouraging all girls to build self-acceptance.
- Respect. Foster respect of the abilities, qualities, and achievements of all girls and women.
- Community. Building a safe and inclusive community for girls to exist and thrive, that supports and values each girl and the power they hold.
- Empowerment. Teaching girls how to identify and cultivate themselves into the influential women they will become.
What We Do
The Girls Are Powerful program starts disrupting the dominant ideas we have about girls. Who tells us what kinds of things about ourselves---and why? Are they true? The girls will
come to understand that they are not the problem, but some beliefs and structures in society work to make it seem that way. The program builds from this more critical awareness of biased structures and policies that shape how we see ourselves, to creating spaces for girls to explore what they think about themselves from within. Activities ask young girls to remember and/or explore “who am I?” and then hold on to it as they face the world. And then, Girls are Powerful, asks these young women to practice speaking up for themselves and then find ways to speak out for others to change the world around them.
Girls Are Powerful is a personal transformation movement that engages and empowers girls to embrace and love all aspects of their identities through self and social awareness, self-advocacy, and social change. We work to solve the issue of self-acceptance that girls and young women face around the globe and remind them of their personal and collective power to love themselves and together do good in the world.
