Who We Are

Hallie Q. Brown Community Center is an African American, nonprofit social service agency dedicated to serving the community, primarily in the Summit-University (Rondo Community) area of Saint Paul, Minnesota and the broader Twin Cities metro area.

Our wonderful volunteers are important partners in our work. Together, we are helping more than 49,000 members of our community every day.

Come join us as we make a positive difference to the lives of those around us. No experience? No problem! Our staff will be there to guide you. All volunteers will also undergo a short orientation program to learn more about Hallie Q. Brown Community Center and what we do.

Each volunteering shift lasts a minimum of two hours. Children are more than welcome to join us as volunteers, especially as garden & landscape volunteers or clothing closet volunteers. Looking to volunteer with your friends, family or co-workers? We have opportunities for you too, including in our food shelf. Just give us a call at 651-224-4601 or approach any of our friendly staff or volunteers at our center for more details!

We look forward to having you join us!

What We Do

The Center has these distinct program areas: The Early Learning Center (ELC) provides early education for infants, toddlers, preschoolers, and school-agers. It is licensed for 72 children ages 6 weeks through 11 years old; the Basic Needs program which includes our Food Shelf and Clothing Closet and assessment tools to connect people to needed resources; Senior Programming for people over the age of 55 to meet and engage in activities to stay vibrant; Lastly, multi-service center administration of the Martin Luther King Center which houses additional programs and partners such as Project Cheer, Prepare and Prosper and the renowned Penumbra Theatre. Our mission is to improve the quality of life in our community by providing access to critical human services by fostering and promoting personal growth and developing community leadership.
