What We Do

Basic Needs Inc. serves as an essential food access organization for South Washington County. Our "volunteer-managed, staff-supported" model relies on dedicated community members to power a local food system that distributed over one million pounds of food in 2025 alone. How You Can Make an Impact: The Food Market: Volunteers lead daily operations in our market, providing a dignified shopping experience for nearly 150,000 individuals annually. You will help neighbors access fresh produce, dairy, and culturally specific staples like Halal-certified meats. Food Rescue: Be at the forefront of sustainability by helping us collect surplus food from our local grocery stories, resturants, over 20 local schools, and other community partners. In 2025, our food market processed over 1 Millon lbs of food! Feeding our neighbors, sending our food scraps to local farmers, and diverting high-quality food from landfills to families in need. Specialized Outreach: Help us maintain vital lifelines, including monthly food drops for 160 senior households and delivery protocols for our homebound neighbors. Whether you are sorting rescue hauls, assisting shoppers, or supporting our Thrift Shop, your time directly transforms lives.
