Who We Are
Inspire the next generation of Minnesota STEM professionals! Founded in 1873, the Minnesota Academy of Science is a statewide nonprofit organization dedicated to fostering interest in science. We do this by sponsoring science programs and activities for students in elementary school through college that teach, promote, and recognize excellence in scientific research.
What We Do
What's a competition without judges? Join the team of judges to chat with students about and provide feedback on their research.
We host science competitions and events that serve students across the state. Events include the State Science and Engineering Fair (March 24, 2023 in St Paul), the high school (January 21, 2023) and middle school (February 11, 2023) Science Bowl competitions in the Twin Cities area, and an undergraduate research symposium (April 2023, location TBD). We need volunteer judges (STEM undergraduate students to tenured professionals are welcome) and people to help with in-person events (no science knowledge needed).
Work to close opportunity gaps and increase diversity in STEM fields in Minnesota
In addition, MAS has a ground-breaking program that works to close opportunity gaps and increase diversity in all MN STEM fields by opening doors to STEM for girls and students from diverse—and too often underrepresented—populations. Fostering Opportunities & Relationships in Science Education (FORSE) brings scientists and students together for mentoring and hands-on STEM learning experiences, helping young people from diverse backgrounds envision a future for themselves in STEM. We need volunteers to assist staff with hands-on activities with students.
