Volunteer: Volunteer Order Builder

Order Building at Every Meal is a specialized role. 

We ask that Order Builder volunteers be able to commit to a minimum of two 2-3 hour shifts each month during the school year.  Volunteers must be trained prior to joining the volunteer Order Builder team.

What to Order Builders at Every Meal do?

Order Building Volunteers help prepare boxes of completed food bags for delivery to our partner schools and community sites across Minnesota. As an Order Builder, you’ll be putting boxes or totes of food bags weighing 25-30lbs each onto pallets or carts, preparing them for delivery by our drivers. This role involves:

Working in a sometimes loud warehouse environment Paying attention to detail or errorsUsing a scanner to pick orders Ability to stand for long periods of time, bending, and lifting boxes up to 30 pounds Ability to commit to volunteering once a week or twice a month A minimum of 18 years and older. Order Building volunteers who would like to operate the electric pallet jack (not required for this volunteer opportunity) must be trained and certified by Every Meal staff.

Please note: No experience or diploma needed; Every Meal will provide all necessary training. We strongly encourage people of color, indigenous, immigrants, refugees, LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities to volunteer.

 

Health and Safety

Closed-toed shoes are required for volunteering. You may bring a water bottle if desired but we do have water fountains available. Masks are currently not required but are encouraged if that is your preference as part of our continued efforts to follow CDC guidelines. As a part of Hunger Action Month, Second Harvest Heartland in partnership with The Sanneh Foundation and Keystone Community Services, is hosting a food distribution and community resource fair outside Allianz Field in St. Paul. Community members can explore resources from community organizations plus take-home shelf stable food and fresh local produce.  

Hunger Action Month is a national campaign every September sparking action and awareness around hunger in our communities. This event is a chance to distribute food while connecting neighbors with other important resources that can support stability and food security.   

We are looking for volunteers to help us pack approximately 500 boxes with 15 food items during the shift. These boxes will join 1,000 pre-packed boxes for a total of 1,500 boxes that will be immediately distributed at this same location.

Program Overview

For many Minnesotans, aging and/or chronic health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease means making difficult choices – housing, medication, or healthy foods?  At Second Harvest Heartland our innovate FOODRx and Senior Hunger programs work to ensure this difficult choice does not have to be made.  We are all in this together and with your partnership we can deliver nutritious food directly to those impacted by hunger.

Seniors enrolled in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) receive a monthly food box, which helps them channel precious financial resources toward urgent expenses like medicine and utilities instead of groceries.

Individuals enrolled in the FOODRx program receive nutrition boxes that are medically tailored and culturally connected to each individual, complete with recipe cards and educational materials.

Program Overview

For many Minnesotans, aging and/or chronic health conditions such as diabetes, high blood pressure or heart disease means making difficult choices – housing, medication, or healthy foods?  At Second Harvest Heartland our innovate FOODRx and Senior Hunger programs work to ensure this difficult choice does not have to be made.  We are all in this together and with your partnership we can deliver nutritious food directly to those impacted by hunger.

Seniors enrolled in the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) receive a monthly food box, which helps them channel precious financial resources toward urgent expenses like medicine and utilities instead of groceries.

Individuals enrolled in the FOODRx program receive nutrition boxes that are medically tailored and culturally connected to each individual, complete with recipe cards and educational materials.

For over 40 years, Loaves & Fishes has gone where the hunger is. As Minnesota’s largest free restaurant, we remain deeply committed to serving healthy, dignified meals to those in need—while ensuring the safety of our guests, volunteers, donors, and staff. Most of our meals are currently served to-go style across our various meal sites.

We’re looking for individuals and small groups to help us prepare and serve meals throughout the Twin Cities. No experience is necessary—our supportive site coordinators will guide you through everything you need to know.

There are multiple meal sites throughout the Twin Cities

Cooking & Meal Prep
Assist with preparing a pre-planned meal and help package it for distribution.

Serving & Cleanup
Package and hand out meals, assist with dishes, and help clean up during and after the meal period.

Volunteer at Our Commissary Kitchen

Located in Minneapolis, our Commissary Kitchen supports all of our meal sites by preparing bulk food and meals for distribution. Volunteers here also do not need prior experience.

Food Prep & Packaging
Assist with preparing ingredients and packaging meals—note that some tasks may involve working with raw meat.

What to Wear

We provide gloves and aprons. If you don’t have a hat, we’ll supply a hairnet. Please wear:

Volunteer: Warehouse Assistant

The Open Door is a hunger relief organization dedicated to ending local hunger through access to healthy food. Through its collective programs, The Open Door serves more than 20,000 Dakota County residents each month, and distributes over 5 million pounds of food annually-70% of which is fresh and/or perishable. Clients are able to access healthy food choices through a fixed-site food pantry in Eagan, multiple Mobile Pantry sites, the Mobile Lunch Box, and the Garden To Table program.

 

Position Summary:

Warehouse Assistants ensure dry goods and perishable items in the pantry are well stocked. They will also help pull items for offsite distributions, accept and sort incoming donations, and assist with the general upkeep of the warehouse area.

 

Primary Duties and Essential Responsibilities:

• Ensure store is well stocked with perishable and nonperishable foods prior to the start of client appointments .

• Accept and sort incoming donations.

• During store hours, pull dry goods from the warehouse for Pantry Assistants to stock shelves

• Ensure warehouse is clean and organized.

• Restock refrigerated perishable items during store hours

• Unload dry good pallets

• Accept and repackage incoming Garden to Table produce

• Mop and sweep floors 15 minutes prior to store open

 

Skills and Qualifications:

• Must be 16+ years of age unless accompanied by an adult

• Ability to stand on feet for up to 3 hours

• Must be ok working in varying temperatures since this role will require working inside a walk-in cooler

• Strong desire to eradicate hunger in Dakota County

• Must be able to lift 20+ pounds

• Closed-toed shoes required

 

Commitment:

Volunteer shifts are 2.5 hours long. Weekday morning, afternoon and evening opportunities are available

This role saves thousands of pounds of food from being sent to a landfill each day! After food is sorted, this volunteer will ensure it is properly staged until it’s ready to be stocked in the store or loaded for an offsite distribution.

 

Position Summary

Food Sorters are responsible for unloading the truck and sorting food donations from our food rescue grocery retail stores. These volunteers will also load the mobile pantry vehicles for our offsite distributions.

 

Primary Duties and Essential Responsibilities

 

* Sort through food donations

* Unload and weigh food from delivery

* Stage food as required

 

Skills and Qualifications

* Must be 16+ years of age.

* Ability to lift 20+ pounds.

* Strong desire to eradicate hunger in Dakota County

* Closed-toed shoes required

* Ability to stand on feet for the duration of shift

 

Training and Support

Sorters will be properly trained prior to their first shift and staff will be available for questions throughout the shift.

So how can you help? We need volunteers to help us assemble the raw contents of a Volunteer Kit at our warehouse in St. Louis Park, MN. To see a MATTER Volunteer Kit in action, please take a minute to watch this video

-Please come to the MATTER office located at 7005 Oxford Street, St. Louis Park. Look for the orange awning to enter the building. Street parking is available along Oxford Street. 
-Shifts are in 2-hour increments, but you are not required to stay the full 2 hours. Only pack to your comfort level.
-Please wear comfortable clothing. Our volunteer space is in a warehouse so the temperature will vary by season. 
-Closed toe shoes are required in the warehouse.
-Minors need to be of the age that they can pack at a station by themselves. Station tables are about 2 1/2 feet high. 12 yrs old and up is recommended.

Safety:
-You will be asked to wash your hands upon arrival before beginning any volunteer tasks. 
-You will be packing in a spacious warehouse and tables are well spaced. 
-Facial coverings are optional.
-Hand sanitizer available.
-Please stay home if you are feeling ill (cough/fever/chills), or if you have been exposed to someone who is or has been ill (whether or not they have been diagnosed with COVID-19). We encourage you to reschedule for another time when you are healthy!

Volunteer: Senior Hunger Site Partner - Hamilton Manor

Program Overview

Through our Senior Hunger Program, Second Harvest Heartland provides a box of nutritious food each month to low-income seniors 60 years and over. Volunteers in this role provide excellent customer service to our seniors and ensure the distribution runs smoothly.  We are all in this together and with your partnership we can deliver nutritious food to more seniors at risk of hunger.

What you’ll do:

Set up for food box distribution Submit site paperwork to Second Harvest Heartland staff Assist participants in moving through sign-in process and food pick up area Verify participants income eligibility Life and load a 35+ pound boxes of groceries

Program Overview

Through our Senior Hunger Program, Second Harvest Heartland provides a box of nutritious food each month to low-income seniors 60 years and over. Volunteers in this role provide excellent customer service to our seniors and ensure the distribution runs smoothly.  We are all in this together and with your partnership we can deliver nutritious food to more seniors at risk of hunger.

The Food Rescue Driver & Helper volunteers partner together to enhance our organization’s ability to directly impact our mission to provide food for those who need it, when they need it. Be a part of sustainability by cruising around Stillwater in the Valley Outreach box truck collecting food donated by local grocery stores to get it into the hands of people who need it most. 

Volunteer  Duties and Responsibilities: 

Drive to local grocery stores to collect food past its marketability -- but not its usability, also known as “food rescue.” Load all food into our box truck provided using a pallet jack, carts, dollies, etc. Unload and weigh all food brought back to Valley Outreach.  Follow food safety guidelines-collecting and documenting temperatures of product and handling and storing product safely (training and all equipment provided).

Volunteer Requirements and Expectations:  

All Food Rescue Drivers must provide their driver’s license and insurance and pass a background check before driving the box truck. Be comfortable driving box truck (no additional licensure required – “it’s like driving a U-Haul!”). Have a familiarity with pallet jacks OR a willingness to learn to use them. Be punctual for your volunteer shift. Follow Valley Outreach Standard of Appearance guidelines. Respect for client confidentiality, consistent with treating clients with dignity and respect. A commitment to racial equity and social justice and willingness to learn and be curious.

Physical Demands:

Able to lift, push and pull up to 60 lbs. repetitively and safely. Able to tolerate walking and standing on hard surfaces for up to 2 hours at a time. Be able to move and bend for loading and unloading food rescue.

The role of Warehouse/Food Rescue Volunteer enhances our organization’s ability to provide food for those who need it, when they need it. Volunteers in this position can expect to receive training and ongoing support from food program staff and work alongside several fellow Warehouse Volunteers.

Volunteer Duties and Responsibilities

·        Sort, store, and distribute bulk food products that are delivered to our warehouse.

·        Follow food safety guidelines provided for each category of product and dispose properly of products that do not meet guidelines.

Take guidance and direction from Valley Outreach staff.

·        Ensure a safe working space by following all warehouse safety guidelines.

Nutritional Services

The Sanneh Foundation was founded as a youth sports organization in 2003 by former World Cup soccer player and native Minnesotan, Tony Sanneh. The Sanneh Foundation has broadened its reach and now provides a broad swath of services to address the social determinants of health across Minnesota. Our goal is to eliminate Minnesota’s steep racial and ethnic disparities in health outcomes, education, and income.

The Sanneh Foundation leads by listening to community members and providing services that are culturally responsive, empowering, and designed to improve lives. In an increasingly diverse state, Sanneh is at the forefront of meeting the needs of underserved communities so that every Minnesotan can grow up with the education, health care, home life, and strong community support they need to thrive.

Our Nutritional Services team works together to improve the lives of community members experiencing hunger by safely and efficiently distributing donated products from food rescue partners to hundreds of households each week across the Twin Cities.

With the support of generous volunteers, our program also empowers youth through on-the-job training and coordinates free food distributions Monday through Friday — rain or shine!

The Sanneh Foundation was founded as a youth sports organization in 2003 by former World Cup soccer player and native Minnesotan, Tony Sanneh. The Sanneh Foundation has broadened its reach and now provides a broad swath of services to address the social determinants of health across Minnesota. Our goal is to eliminate Minnesota’s steep racial and ethnic disparities in health outcomes, education, and income.

The Sanneh Foundation leads by listening to community members and providing services that are culturally responsive, empowering, and designed to improve lives. In an increasingly diverse state, Sanneh is at the forefront of meeting the needs of underserved communities so that every Minnesotan can grow up with the education, health care, home life, and strong community support they need to thrive.

Our Nutritional Services team works together to improve the lives of community members experiencing hunger by safely and efficiently distributing donated products from food rescue partners to hundreds of households each week across the Twin Cities.

With the support of generous volunteers, our program also empowers youth through on-the-job training and coordinates free food distributions Monday through Friday — rain or shine!

Food insecurity is a crisis in our community and it has been accelerated by cost of living increases. An incredible 1 in 8 of our neighbors are in danger of going hungry. SACA needs weekly volunteers to help support our neighbors who depend on these services. Your dedication of time means the world to us and to the people we serve. To ensure food-safety standards, the temperature of the clean room will be kept at a cool 42°. Shifts may include sorting and boxing packaged frozen protein or repackaging ready-to-eat bulk protein into smaller family-friendly portions. Ready-to-eat protein consists of frozen meat items that do not require additional cooking prior to consumption like deli meats and items that require reheating for palatability like chicken nuggets.

Volunteer: Sorting and Packing Shifts at Brooklyn Park

At our Brooklyn Park Volunteer Center, volunteers assist with sorting, labeling, weighing and packing various food items to meet immediate needs and help feed our hungry neighbors. The projects vary from day to day and volunteers regularly work with fresh produce, dry goods, bread, and other food donations. This volunteer position requires volunteers to be able to twist and bend down, stand for the duration of their shift, and lift up to 5 pounds. Some positions require the ability to lift 40 pounds. We do have a limited number of seated positions available; please let us know if you need accommodations.


Dress Code:

Shirts must cover the shoulders, armpits, and bellies (no tank tops or crop tops) for food safety purposes. Shorts are okay to wear. Closed-toe shoes are required. If you forget we will ask you to wear a set of disposable socks and slip-on clogs. Wear comfortable clothing that you don't mind getting dirty. We suggest you dress in layers to remain comfortable while working as temperature can fluctuate. No jewelry. You will be asked to remove all watches, fit bits, earrings, rings, bracelets, necklaces and other jewelry items. It is almost impossible to get back a jewelry item that is lost in the repack process.

Lockers are available on-site to store belongings and we provide jewelry bags for small items.

Volunteer: Every Meal Food Bag Packing

As a Food Bag Packing Volunteer, you’ll join other members of the community at our Volunteer Center in Roseville to help pack food for our Weekend Meal Program. In this high-energy and high-impact volunteer opportunity, you’ll form assembly lines to pack bags containing 4-5 Lbs of shelf-stable fruits, vegetables, proteins and grains. Every food bag we distribute to hungry children in our community is packed by volunteers. Food bags are placed in the backpacks of students at the end of each school week to provide nutrition over the weekend.

We have several opportunities most weeks during the school year to come pack food bags with us. You can register for our packing events as a team or an individual.

Our age minimum to volunteer is 8 years old.

Closed-toed shoes are required for volunteering. Masks are currently not required.

As a Food Bag Packing Volunteer, you’ll join other members of the community at our Volunteer Center in Roseville to help pack food for our Weekend Meal Program. In this high-energy and high-impact volunteer opportunity, you’ll form assembly lines to pack bags containing 4-5 Lbs of shelf-stable fruits, vegetables, proteins and grains. Every food bag we distribute to hungry children in our community is packed by volunteers. Food bags are placed in the backpacks of students at the end of each school week to provide nutrition over the weekend.

We have several opportunities most weeks during the school year to come pack food bags with us. You can register for our packing events as a team or an individual.

Our age minimum to volunteer is 8 years old.

Closed-toed shoes are required for volunteering. Masks are currently not required.

Please note: No experience or diploma needed; Every Meal will provide all necessary training. We strongly encourage people of color, indigenous, immigrants, refugees, LGBTQ+, and people with disabilities to volunteer.

Volunteer: Retail Rescue Driver

Retail Rescue Drivers play a crucial role in providing healthy, non-perishable food to our clients. Drivers pick up large food shelf donations from local grocery stores. The food is no longer able to be sold at the grocery store for various reasons but still safe to consume. This role saves thousands of pounds of food from being in a landfill each day!

Position Summary

The Retail Rescue Drivers help gather and load up donations then transport them back to IOCP. Due to the size of these donations often, drivers use IOCP vans and trucks for pick-ups. Retail Rescue Drivers play a crucial role in providing healthy, non-perishable food to our clients. Drivers pick up large food shelf donations from local grocery stores. The food is no longer able to be sold at the grocery store for various reasons but still safe to consume. This role saves thousands of pounds of food from being in a landfill each day!

Position Summary

The Retail Rescue Drivers help gather and load up donations then transport them back to IOCP. Due to the size of these donations often, drivers use IOCP vans and trucks for pick-ups. We are in need of weekly volunteers Monday to Thursday who can commit to 2-4 hours to help in the food market, warehouse, thrift story and intake.

There are two shifts for these tasks every Tuesday, from 9:30am to 12:30pm and from 12:30 to 3:00pm.
