Volunteer: Academic & Leadership Tutor Volunteer

Summary

This position offers academic tutoring and career exploration services to support GESMN’s YouthBuild program and participants. This may include academic and career lesson creation and planning, delivering the lessons/content to YouthBuild students, and/or locating resources in the community that meet participants’ unique needs. Topics for classes might include math, social studies, language arts, science, career exploration, trades overviews, etc. 

 

Schedule & Time Commitment:

Schedule for research is flexible; YouthBuild classes are held Mondays/Fridays, 9:00 a.m.-10:00 a.m. via ZOOM and Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursdays from 9:00 a.m.-3:30 p.m. in-person at our training facility in St. Paul (635 Prior Avenue North).

 

Responsibilities:

Research

Research interactive, activities/engagement techniques Research engaging presentation methods Research youth development strategies Research other community resources relevant to YouthBuild participants

Content Creation

Create a lesson plan/tutoring method based on above research.

Presentation

Assist and/or execute academic and/or career readiness curriculum planning and lessons May also include delivering lesson plan/s to YouthBuild students

Tutoring

Work 1:1 with students on academic and career readiness topics

 

Requirements:

Must have interest in providing services to YouthBuild’s target population (at-risk youth, age 16-24) Must have access to the technology needed to meet the responsibilities of the position Must pass a criminal background check.

Schedule & Time Commitment: Schedule is flexible – volunteers typically service 2-4 hours per week during regular business hours: Mondays-Fridays, 8:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.

 

Volunteer Duties

Meet with Construction Instructor weekly to review math content to be covered in class and to report on student/trainee’s weekly progress. Meet with students/trainees one-on-one at the training facility and provide math tutoring. Provide respectful feedback to students/trainees on their progress.

 

Requirements & Qualifications

Must pass a criminal background check. Experience in the Construction Trades and/or teaching math.
