Volunteer: Volunteer Opportunity: Wood Floor Refinishing – Historic Chapter House

Minnesota Valley Chapter, Izaak Walton League of America

About Us

This year, the Minnesota Valley Chapter of the Izaak Walton League turns 100 years old. For a century, volunteers have cared for land, water, youth, and community along the Minnesota River.

Our historic Chapter House—a 1930s home we’ve stewarded since 1962—has been at the heart of that work. Its floors have carried generations of footsteps: young conservation leaders, artists, volunteers, and neighbors.

As we celebrate our centennial, we’re hoping to give the Chapter a birthday present that will last: restoring the oak floors so this space can carry us into our next hundred years.

The Opportunity

We are seeking in-kind professional services to refinish the original oak wood floors throughout our Chapter House. These floors have decades of stories in them—and a lot of foot traffic. We’re ready to restore them properly so the beauty of the oak can shine again and support many more years of community use.

This is a meaningful way for a skilled flooring professional or craftsperson to give back by leaving a lasting mark on a historic, mission-driven space.

Scope of Work

Approximately 2,000 square feet total

Includes the office, board room, and Kouba Gallery

Sanding and refinishing original oak floors

Proper sealing for durability and high-traffic use

Work timing flexible and coordinated with Chapter schedule

Volunteer: Event Support – Minnesota Valley Envirothon Invitational

About Us

The Minnesota Valley Chapter of the Izaak Walton League of America is a 100% volunteer-run community dedicated to environmental education, conservation service, and youth leadership. We steward land along the Minnesota River and host programs that bring young people, educators, and community members together around learning, nature, and action.

About Envirothon

Envirothon is a hands-on, team-based environmental science competition for high school students. Students demonstrate their knowledge in areas such as soils, water, forestry, wildlife, and current environmental issues — and present solutions through oral presentations.

This event is the first-ever Minnesota Valley Envirothon Invitational, created as a warm-up opportunity for students ahead of the official Minnesota Envirothon season. Exams are written by Minnesota Envirothon alumni, and the event follows the traditional Envirothon format.

The Event

Date: Saturday, March 21, 2026

Time: 8:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m.

Location: Minnesota Valley Chapter House
6601 Auto Club Road, Bloomington, MN 55438

Hosted by: Minnesota Valley Chapter of the Izaak Walton League

Co-sponsored by:

Three Rivers Park District

Lower Minnesota River Watershed District

Green Crew

The Opportunity

We are looking for day-of event support volunteers to help make this youth-focused environmental competition a success. This is a one-day commitment only — perfect for someone who wants to support students, education, and conservation without an ongoing obligation.

What You’ll Do

Roles will vary based on need and may include:

Helping with event setup and breakdown

Checking in teams and volunteers

Directing students and guests to stations

Supporting judges and station leaders

General hospitality and logistical support

No prior Envirothon experience is required — we’ll provide clear instructions on the day of the event.

Who This Is For

People who enjoy supporting youth and education

Volunteers who like being part of a well-organized event

Anyone interested in conservation, science, or community service

Individuals looking for a single-day volunteer opportunity

Time Commitment

One day only

Approximately 4–5 hours

Roles and schedules will be coordinated in advance

Why This Matters

By volunteering, you’re helping high school students build confidence, teamwork, and environmental literacy — and supporting the launch of a new educational tradition in the Minnesota River Valley.

Volunteer: Be the First Friendly Face: Community Welcome Volunteer

About Us

The Minnesota Valley Chapter of the Izaak Walton League is a 100% volunteer-run community of people who love nature, care about conservation, and believe community should feel human, not bureaucratic. We steward land along the Minnesota River and support youth leadership, art, and storytelling through programs like the Green Crew, the Kouba Gallery, and the Young IKE podcast.

The Opportunity (What This Really Is)

When someone reaches out to volunteer, they’re usually excited — and a little unsure.

This role is simply about being the first friendly human response.

No systems.
No managing.
No pressure.

Just making people feel welcome and helping them take their next small step.

What You’d Actually Do

Send a warm reply when someone says, “I’d like to help.”

Ask a simple question like, “What are you interested in?”

Point them toward an upcoming event, project day, or person.

Occasionally send a quick thank-you after they participate.

That’s it.

You are not responsible for outcomes — just connection.

Who This Is Perfect For

Someone kind, responsive, and human

A people-person who doesn’t want a “role”

Someone who believes first impressions matter

Anyone who likes helping others feel less awkward walking into something new

Time & Commitment

Totally flexible

Often bursty, not constant

Usually a few emails a month, sometimes none

Fully remote

Why This Matters

People don’t stay because of spreadsheets.
They stay because someone made them feel welcome.

You’d be that someone.

Volunteer: Investment & Financial Perspective Volunteer

About Us
We’re a 100% volunteer-run conservation organization working along the Minnesota River. We restore land, support youth leadership through our award-winning Green Crew, and bring people together around environmental action, art, and community. We care deeply about using our resources wisely so we can keep doing this work for the long haul.

The Ask (Plainly Stated)
We’re looking for one or two finance-minded people who enjoy thinking critically about money — not managing it day-to-day, but stepping back and asking smart questions.

If you like looking at a portfolio and saying:

“What’s the risk here?”

“What’s this money for?”

“Does this still make sense?”

…this role is for you.

What This Is (and Is Not)
✔ A chance to bring perspective, not paperwork
✔ A working conversation with thoughtful people
✔ A few hours, a few times a year

✖ Not bookkeeping
✖ Not fundraising
✖ Not legal or fiduciary liability
✖ Not a heavy lift

What You’ll Actually Do

Meet quarterly with a small group (Vice President, Treasurer, and a few volunteers).

Review the Chapter’s investment picture at a high level.

Talk through balance, risk exposure, and long-term sustainability.

Offer recommendations and “gut checks,” not directives.

Help the Board make clearer, calmer decisions about money.

Who This Tends to Fit Well

Someone in finance, investing, accounting, or wealth management

A semi-retired or retired professional who still enjoys thinking, but not managing

A values-driven person who wants their experience to matter

Someone who likes being a trusted voice, not the person “in charge”

Time Commitment

Quarterly meetings

Light prep beforehand

Respectful of your time and boundaries

Why This Matters
Good conservation work fails when money decisions are rushed, opaque, or misaligned.
Your perspective helps us stay steady, ethical, and effective — and helps protect the work our volunteers and youth are doing on the ground.

If you’ve ever thought, “I’d like to give back using my judgment, not my weekends,” this is that opportunity.
