Volunteer: Childcare Provider

This position offers a fun, safe, welcoming environment for children while their parent attends our weekly support group (completion of online course training required). The groups are located in Shakopee on Monday evenings 7:00pm – 8:30pm. We ask for a commitment of at least 1 meeting a month.

Volunteer: Court Advocate

The Court Advocate provides accompaniment and emotional support for clients at civil and criminal court hearings for Order for Protections (OFP), Harassment Restraining Orders (HRO), and criminal court proceedings resulting from domestic violence (completion of online course training required). Court hearings take place at Scott and Carver County Government centers. NOTE: You do not need a legal background for this role – this is an emotional support role.

Volunteer with Southern Valley Alliance at the Heartland Outlet in Shakopee. A portion of the sales made at the outlet during our shift comes back to SVA! Various roles include pricing, inventory, repair and assembly, cashiering, etc. Shifts are the second Tuesday each month from 4-7pm.

You do not need to be on site for this position; it is done remotely through your home or cell phone.  Although you are “on call” during the entire shift, you may or may not receive calls. Our crisis line shifts start on weeknights at 5pm and go to the following morning at 8:30am. On a typical shift, volunteers may receive anywhere from 0-2 calls. Most volunteers keep their cell phone up at a louder volume and go about their normal activities when they’re on-call. In this role you:

Serve as a resource person in providing information and referrals to callers. Support and encourage victims to empower themselves and make their own choices. Assist victims in clarifying their issues and in identifying and exploring alternatives and solutions to those issues. Keep an accurate record of calls received using Contact or CJI report forms (submitting the forms before the next business day) SVA staff is always on backup so if questions/issues arise, you can reach out for guidance.
