Volunteer: Child care volunteer

Provide youth ages infant to teen with support and engaging activities.
• Keep the playroom and childcare areas clean and organized.
• Assist with crafts, games or free-play.
• Act as a positive role model.

Volunteer: Prepare and Serve a Meal

Overview:

Your group will plan, purchase the ingredients for, and prepare a meal or snack at the Alexandra House shelter.  Groups will also be responsible for serving and clean-up.  After all program participants have been served, groups are welcome to join families for the meal.  Groups also have the option of decorating the dining area for a themed meal. When deciding the times you will be volunteering, please give yourself ample time for preparation and clean-up.  

 

Time Commitment:

Meals can be served following times:

Lunch 11:15am-12:00pm (weekends only) Dinner 4:30pm-5:30pm

In addition to the times above, groups should factor in additional time for preparation and clean-up on the day of their project and for purchasing ingredients and planning time before the project. 

 

Requirements:

Groups must be able to purchase ingredients for a meal or snack to serve between 35-40 women and children.  Teen volunteers (ages 15-17) must have at least one adult supervising.

 

Group Size:

Due to tight space in the kitchen, the Serve a Meal Volunteer Project is best suited for groups between 3-4 members. 

 

Experience:

Group members should be comfortable in a kitchen and able to interact with program participants and staff from a variety of different backgrounds.

Position Overview: 

Provide hospital advocacy to victims of domestic and sexual violence.

Specific Tasks:

Respond to referrals from Unity and Mercy hospitals. Provide support to sexual and domestic violence victims during their stay at the hospital. Complete all necessary paperwork while at the hospital and return to the Healthcare Coordinator. Communicate with other full-time staff and volunteers regarding ongoing facility, program, and client needs. Follow all agency policies and procedures. Complete other tasks as assigned. Maintain values of dignity, empowerment, and respect with all clients, callers, staff, and volunteers of the agency and program.

Training Required:

Volunteer Interview, Volunteer Orientation, Background Check, Information Session, 50-hour Domestic/Sexual Violence training (certificate included), attendance at any additional volunteer meetings.

Time Commitment: 

Minimum of 3 shifts/month for a minimum of 6 months. Shifts available: weekday overnights (4:30pm to 8:00am); weekends and holiday shifts (8:00am to 8:00pm and 8:00pm to 8:00am).

18 years or older and has not received Alexandra House services in the last year.  In general, live within 30 miles of Unity and Mercy Hospitals. Must have valid driver’s license, current auto insurance, and reliable vehicle.  Must have a hard-line telephone or cell phone with reliable reception.
