As a United Hospital Volunteer you will make a difference in your community. Whether you are greeting patients and visitors to the hospital, interacting with patients in the Emergency Department, or assisting in the Gift Shop, you leave a lasting impression.

This is a great opportunity for former healthcare workers, who miss the hustle and bustle of hospitals and patient interaction.

General requirements:

Show that you care and make a difference by volunteering to support unit staff with non-patient care related tasks. Gain a unique and invaluable perspective on health and make meaningful connections with both staff and patients. The unit support volunteer supports staff by keeping supply room stocked, providing a friendly face to patients, running errands throughout the hospital, and assisting with discharging patients. Current Units with availability: Cardio Unit Station 3500/3940 is a 26 bed intermediate care plus 6 bed ICU unit. We care for cardiac telemetry patients, intermediate care, and post-cardiac surgical ICU patients. Shifts: Tuesdays and Thursdays 12pm-3pm Neuro/Spine Unit The neuro/spine unit is a 32 bed unit caring for patients who have had strokes and spine surgery. The team values their positive atmosphere and culture of teamwork to ensure patients have a positive experience. Many of our patients would appreciate the extra time this unit support could provide to play games and keep them company when loved ones are not able to be present.   Shifts: Tuesdays and Thursdays 11am-2pm *Age Requirement for Neuro/Spine Because volunteers might interact with patients with dementia and other brain disorders, volunteers must be at least 17 years old.

The focus of Emergency Department Volunteers is to provide comfort and service to Emergency Department patients and their families keeping inline with our Commitment to Care standards. They serve as the go between for patients, families, and guest services and  the ED staff, ensuring that the patients needs are met. 

Training: Guest Services 

Shifts: 11am-2pm, 2pm-5pm, 5pm-8pm, 8pm-10pm Monday-Friday

            11am-2pm, 2pm-5pm, 5pm-8pm Saturday-Sunday

Patients coming to AHCI for breast imaging appointments tell us that the welcoming and helpful volunteers make their whole experience better. Volunteers will greet and escorts patients coming to the clinic, ensuring that Allina’s commitment to Whole Person Care ensures a healing and inclusive environment. There is nothing like a furry face and wagging tail to brighten your day and bring a smile to your face. For patients in hospitals, pet therapy decreases anxiety, lowers blood pressure, and improves overall health.

Our pet therapy volunteers offer comfort and support to patients, families, and staff. As they go about the hospital, they leave a trail of smiles everywhere they go in a way that only dogs can do.

The first point of contact, the Welcome Ambassador is stationed at the hospital entrance to welcome, direct, and engage with patients and visitors.  Ambassadors act as greeters and wayfinders ensuring that whole people-centered care starts from the get-go.

Hospital Concierge

Works in collaboration with Welcome Ambassador volunteers and Guest Service staff to greet and escort visitors coming to the hospital. With an eye for customer service, Hospital Concierges provide a caring and comforting atmosphere for visitors. They treat every person with respect, concern, and hospitality regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, or sociological background.

PPE: surgical mask, eye shield only when transporting patients

Job Duties:

Provides excellent customer service at all times Ability to assist customers/guest with specific requests and solve problems using independent judgment and discretion. Escorts visitors throughout the hospital Instructs visitors on infection control when entering/leaving patient rooms Supports Outpatient pharmacy by making delivery runs to the Ritchie Day Surgery building Patient deliveries (flower/gifts) Corral/sanitize wheelchairs Transport patients to/from imaging procedures on main floor Sanitize high touch surfaces in main lobby waiting area

Wanted Qualities:

Customer service minded Self-directed Adept at smizing (smiling with your eyes) Able to learn thorough knowledge of hospital

This position requires walking/standing for majority of shift, pushing wheelchairs, and carrying bulky item, such as, flowers.

Patient Cart Activator

The purpose of the Patient cart is to bring a bit of cheer and complimentary items to patients and guests while they are on our campus. Volunteers will round the hospital units and waiting rooms offering boredom buster activities such as sudukos, coloring books, and playing cards. This position requires two volunteers, so it is a great opportunities for friends and siblings who want to volunteer together.

PPE: mask and eye protection

Time: Monday-Sunday 11-2, 2-5

Physical requirement:

Requires walking, standing, sitting, lifting and reaching Ability to push/pull up to 25 pounds

This is a complex position that will support staff on the Mother Baby Post-Partum unit. Volunteers in this position will be cross-trained in nursery to offer additional support as needed.

Position Duties:

Light administrative work such as putting folders together  Set up room for vaginal delivery admission Bring supplies to patients (more diapers, pacifiers, ice water, max pads/mesh underwear, etc.) Infection control: sanitize high touch surfaces and family center rooms, ensure hand sanitizers are fully stocked, monitor that masks protocol is being followed by visitors. Round/sanitize wheel chairs when needed Transportation: assist with patient discharge, transport baby to and from mom following proper transportation guidelines Additional help in the Newborn Nursery as needed

Requirements/Prerequisites:

18 years or older 6 month commitment prior experience with newborns/infants 

Time: Monday-Sunday 11am-2pm and 2pm-5pm

Training:

Shadow nursery and/or experience volunteer at least twice before doing solo shift Annual Newborn Nursery Review
