Volunteer: ESL Classroom Assistant (Age 18 +)Title of Position: Classroom Assistant
Purpose: To provide assistance to ESL or GED students in a classroom situation, under the direction of a lead teacher
Requirements: Ability to speak, read and write English; dependable; prompt; patient; non-judgmental; and able to maintain confidentiality.
Training: Attend one of the Minnesota Literacy Council’s 12-hour Pre-Service Tutor Trainings (or 2-3 hour online training) and periodic In-Service Workshops as appropriate. Attend an initial orientation meeting at the learning center.
Location: Open Door Learning Center – Northside 611 Van White Memorial Blvd, Minneapolis, MN 55411
Time Commitment: Two hours per week for a minimum of 4 months.
Duties: - Arrive regularly and punctually. Work cooperatively with lead teacher to determine lesson content and approaches. Assist instructor with an ESL or GED class of 5-15 adult learners; may involve one-on-one work with students, being a classroom “floater,” doing pull-out work with low-level students, helping teacher demonstrate how to do activities, or other tasks as necessary. Inform coordinator of any problems. Dress in a manner that is mindful of the culturally diverse students we serve. Report time off to coordinator in a timely manner.

*An additional two hours of training is required for every twelve months of service, and can be fulfilled through one of the many in-service trainings offered by the literacy council, or through another approved workshop or event.
