The Court Advocate provides accompaniment and emotional support for clients at civil and criminal court hearings for Order for Protections (OFP), Harassment Restraining Orders (HRO), and criminal court proceedings resulting from domestic violence (completion of online course training required). Court hearings take place at Scott and Carver County Government centers. NOTE: You do not need a legal background for this role – this is an emotional support role.

Refugees and others who have a special status arrive in the United States legally after being forced to flee violence and persecution. Once they arrive in Minnesota, LSS Refugee Services works to secure safe and affordable housing for them, offers employment services and empowers them to achieve self-sufficiency and agency. Mentors act as friends and neighbors to newly arrived refugees and support them as they navigate the challenges of resettlement. 

Goal of Position:

To be a guide and friend for a refugee or refugee couple in their challenging first months in the United States. Each paring will involve setting 2-3 goals/focuses for the mentorship.

Sample Activities:

Please Note:

A Case Worker works with each refugee for at least their first 90 days in the US.  These first needs are called the “core services,” including housing, furniture, basic household items, medical care, social security, employment authorization documentation, school enrollment. Mentors are not responsible for these services.

Time Commitment:

Mentors make a commitment to meet at least once a week for three months. This has the potential for extension, if all parties are interested in continuing.

Scheduling:

At the discretion of the volunteer and availability of the refugee.

Worksite:

Varies, but will most likely be at the refugee’s home and in the community.

Qualifications:

Cross-cultural sensitivity, flexibility, patience, and a sense of humor.  Ability to work with people with basic English proficiency. Interest in helping refugees with resettlement needs.  An application, interview, and background check are required. Training and supervision are provided.

Like to drive and help people? This is the volunteer opportunity for you! Flexibility is key – drivewhenever it works for you. There is no set schedule –decide when and where you want to drive. Drivers use their personal vehicles to transport area residents to their requested destinations. You can view available rides and accept the ones you want using our web-based transportation management program. Assist with transportation needs around the Twin Cities metro. We have situations where a foster is unable to get their foster dog/cat to an appointment and need a team of volunteers willing to transport the foster to/from the appointment. Our goal is to build a list of volunteers willing to help in these situations, we send out the request and drivers available or closest to the foster respond back that they can help. The driver and foster are connected via email/text to work specific details of pick-up/drop-off. Most appointments will be to Vet locations in the Twin Cities metro, Forest Lake, Wyoming or Buffalo.

Time commitment for this role varies depending on the need, but on average each transport could be 2-3 hours.

Flexibility is essential and your own transportation is required. Gas expenses are not covered by the rescue.

The Music For Memories non-profit is looking for piano accompanists/choir leaders to help us expand the number of senior choirs within senior living facilities in the Twin Cities/Western Wisconsin area.

We are looking for volunteers to teach a one-hour online class to beginning or intermediate English Learners. The curriculum is provided to you.  The classes are scheduled between 5:00 - 9:00 p.m. Monday - Friday evenings.  We also may schedule a weekend class. 

You will work with a teacher to reinforce the curriculum that students are learning in their other classes.  You usually have between 2-8 students attending a Zoom conference. Training in teaching strategies and Zoom presentations are offered if needed.  Volunteers usually commit to one-two hours a week. 

VSS is looking for volunteers who can assist students online or in person with their digital learning skills. Or, we may ask you to teach a module in class (online or in-person).

Our students receive a Chrome Book to complete homework and attend Zoom classes.  We need to train students on using this technology.  Hours are varied and/or you can attend an appointment with a student. 

VSS has Adult Basic Education classes that are in person Monday through Friday.

The schedule is 9:30 a.m. to noon.   12:30 p.m. - 1:30 p.m. 

We need volunteers to serve as teaching assistants in the beginning and intermediate classes.  Teaching assistants will lead break-out groups, check students' work, and work with students who may be struggling in class.   

Volunteers can come for an hour during class, or for the morning or afternoon session. Volunteers work out a schedule with the teacher, so the teachers can prepare work or assignments prior to the class. Volunteers usually commit to 1 to 3 hours per week. 

VSS needs individuals interested in helping our clients with day-to-day activities as clients learn how to navigate government and medical assistance.  

Volunteers can set up appointments with clients to help them fill out paperwork, make medical appointments, apply for drivers' licenses or MN Identification Cards, and apply for jobs. VSS will connect you to a client and provide translation services if necessary.

General Description Of the Position: The 200 Orphanages Worldwide Board is vital to the continued success of the organization. The main purpose of the Executive Board Member is to serve as an ambassador for 200 Orphanages Worldwide in their community and within professional and personal networks. Doing this means to seek out additional committed supporters, donors, volunteers and advisors to serve and to support fund raising efforts for our partner projects. Also it is critical to support the organization by providing direction, clear focus and operational support if applicable.

The Parkinson's Foundation Minnesota & Dakotas Chapter seeks interested individuals to serve on our Chapter Board. The volunteer board is made up of diverse professionals committed increase awareness, increase the Chapter's reach, and helping raise funds to serve more people living with Parkinson's disease, their care partners, clinicians, and supportive professionals. The Parkinson's Foundation is an established national nonprofit with an annual budget of $50M. Seventeen chapters nationwide support initiatives on the ground while helping strategize programs, research, and grant-making. The Minnesota and Dakotas Chapter Board will help us to reach all 17,088 individuals living with PD in our 3-state area. The Board meets virtually 6 times/ year, and committees of the Board meet as needed. Depending on their skills, interests, and networks/industries, members take on individual and project-based work. A modest personal financial contribution, as well as a commitment to active fundraising, is expected. Project Pathfinder, Inc. (PPI) seeks individuals interested in supporting a program that has been committed to preventing sexual violence for 30 years! PPI is a private, non-profit (501 (c) (3)) corporation serving clients in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. We are in need of volunteer fosters to care for dogs, cats and kittens in your home until an adoptive home is found.  Second Chance provides the supplies you will need to care for the animal(s).  We train you in the process and are available to assist with questions you may have.  All animals are seen by a vet prior to them coming into your home.  We ask that you have a separate room for cats or kittens to become acclimated to your home prior to slowly adjusting.  Please help us save more lives.

We are seeking a dedicated and enthusiastic volunteer to aid our transportation team and our many group homes. Hopewell Music Cooperative North (Hopewell Music) began in 2012 when two Northside music teachers shared a frustration over the diminishing access to music education. In turn, these teachers began offering lessons to area students and opened the only comprehensive music school in the area. Volunteers in our Harm Reduction area work with our Harm Reduction staff to create the kits we take on our outreach trips. Volunteers in Harm Reduction usually work in a group assembly line style, packing safer sex kits or the kits for our Syringe Exchange program. 

Harm Reduction volunteers also have opportunities to gain more Harm Reduction skills, like HIV testing, Narcan/Naloxone administration trainings, etc.

Gardeners will work on a variety of projects from planting flowers and trees, to weeding and watering under the direction of a staff member or an experienced volunteer. Head Gardener

The Volunteer Head Gardener position is ideal for an individual with a passion for the outdoors and gardening. This position will be an integral part of the Caponi Art Park team, helping to plan, care for, and maintain park grounds. They will also spend time working with less-experienced park volunteers, ensuring that proper gardening techniques are used consistently. The Head Gardener will ideally be able to volunteer on a regular basis at Caponi Art Park.

Assist in Maintenance of park gardens, pathways, and landscaping.

Work alongside other outdoor volunteers, encouraging consistent gardening techniques.

Generate an ongoing list of pertinent gardening projects and grounds maintenance task; this list will serve as a guide for other park gardening volunteers.

Volunteers are needed throughout the season for leaf raking, storm debris clean-up, and general park maintenance. A few times throughout the season, we like to gather our friends to help clean-up the park. Regular park clean-ups help maintain the park grounds, and ensure that all visitors have an enjoyable and safe experience during their visit to the park. Housing Justice Center (HJC) is a nonprofit public interest legal and policy advocacy organization dedicated to the production and preservation of affordable housing and the protection of the rights of people who need affordable places to call home. The tools we use for this work are community organizing, research, education, policy advocacy, and legal advocacy.

HJC VISTA Project Overview

This VISTA project seeks to expand Housing Justice Center’s capacity to address housing instability, the lack of tenant rights knowledge, and limited organizing infrastructure for renters and manufactured housing residents in exurban Minnesota. Key issues include displacement threats, discrimination, mismanagement, unaffordability, and repair problems. This project will focus on the exurban Twin Cities counties of Wright, Sherburne, Isanti, and Chisago. The VISTA Tenant Organizer will build capacity to support low-income disabled, BIPOC, and/or immigrant renters by forging new community partnerships, developing and delivering tenant rights training, and helping create at least one new resident association in a targeted property.

This VISTA Member is part of HOME Line's Tenant Organizing VISTA Project cohort.

VISTA Responsibilities

The HJC VISTA Tenant Organizer will build organizing infrastructure in the targeted counties of Wright, Isanti, Sherburne, and Chisago. Duties include:

Moments Hospice is looking for craft volunteers who are interested in sewing, crocheting, or knitting patriotic wall coverings/blankets. The wall covering should have a patriotic design and be approximately six feet by four feet. These patriotic blankets will be placed over a deceased Veteran, or can be used as a keepsake for the family.

We also need craft volunteers to make fidget blankets, hospital gowns, lavender sachets, rice heating blankets, and Thinking of You cards for our patients.

The Loppet Foundation is searching for Junior Loppet Assistant Coaches. The Junior Loppet program is a year-round, after-school program that empowers Minneapolis middle schoolers through healthy outdoor activities like cross country skiing, mountain biking, trail running, orienteering, and paddling. We focus on partnering with middle schools where most of the school population is eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch. The program is 2-3 days per week after school and throughout the summer. Students also participate in events, races, weekend camping, and training trips. The program leverages outdoor adventure to help middle schoolers build habits, social and emotional skills, and personal connections that promote success both on and off the trails.

Qualifications:

In our schools, we teach the students an oral health curriculum based on the science of a healthy oral lifestyle. In our early childhood programs, we teach the parents how to raise a decay-free child.

Community Health Workers contact the families of urgent-need children to refer them to our partner clinics for comprehensive care.

Our Support Group Facilitators provide support for clients and structure to Support Group meetings (completion of online course training required). Facilitators are provided training and curriculum to encourage engaging and supportive conversations. Our support group facilitators provide: 

Support groups are currently offered virtually on Monday evenings and in-person on Tuesday evenings in Scott County.

We ask our volunteer facilitators to sign up for a minimum of 1 shift per month.

The crisis line advocate answers SVA’s Crisis Line during the weekday evening hours and weekend hours (completion of online course training required). You do not need to be on site for this position; it is done remotely through your home or cell phone.  Although you are “on call” during the entire shift, you may or may not receive calls. Our crisis line shifts start on weeknights at 5pm and go to the following morning at 8:30am. On a typical shift, volunteers may receive anywhere from 0-2 calls. Most volunteers keep their cell phone up at a louder volume and go about their normal activities when they’re on-call. In this role you:

Black Butterfly works with community corrections agents and service partners to recruit young women struggling with the pain of addiction, violence, and instability. Potential sisters must show a willingness to change their lives and contribute to the transformational culture of Black Butterfly’s home.

The Black Butterfly home consists of a house Mother and five-ten residents. The values of this community are informed by love and respect for one another; trusting relationships, mutual accountability; and healing core hurts.

Regular assistance with light cleaning is needed. There is also a donation closet with items such as clothing, households items, and personal hygiene items that needs to be sorted and organized as donations come in. 

The Black Butterfly home consists of a house Mother and five-ten residents. The values of this community are informed by love and respect for one another; trusting relationships, mutual accountability; and healing core hurts.

Items needed for the residents include:

Serve as a transition coach with women who are committed to changing their lives. Typically, an individual will meet with a coach to set specific goals related to the skills that are needed to be self-sufficient. An action plan is developed on how the goals will be accomplished. The coach will provide one-on-one support, resources, and interventions to women as they identify, and access critical basic needs and services related to their transition to independent living.

Be a mentor for women who are working on a journey to improve their lives. Be a friend, listen, and build a positive relationship with a woman who may be engaged with the justice system and afflicted with deep traumas related to violence, addiction, and poverty.

The vigil volunteer provides a supportive presence to dying patients and families when symptoms are under control. The vigil volunteer’s presence is a valuable gift. The vigil volunteer successfully completes vigil volunteer training in addition to friendly visitor training. The vigil volunteer training focuses on the needs of the dying patient and their family. The training includes signs of death and dying during the last hours of the patient’s life, as well as faith practice and cultural differences related to dying.

In hospice, one of the primary goals of care is to relieve a patient’s suffering. The vigil volunteer provides a supportive presence to actively dying patients and their families. When a patient faces the process of dying, coping skills can be taxed and suffering can ensue. Vigil volunteers and other hospice team members can help provide the patient with the most valuable gift - a loving presence.

No one understands the questions and concerns of a U.S. military veteran more than a fellow veteran. That’s why ProMedica/Heartland has developed the Vets-to-Vets program, in which volunteers with similar backgrounds can meet with and assist in the care of U.S. military veteran patients.

Veteran volunteers offer support for veteran patients and caregivers by celebrating and recognizing their contributions to America’s freedom. Veteran volunteers complete the training material found in this manual and are available to provide the services listed below after receiving instructions from the volunteer coordinator. Veteran volunteers are under the direct supervision of the volunteer coordinator.

Following are some examples of veteran patient assignments: • Participating in veteran pinning ceremonies • Offering support through regular companionship visits • Making assurance phone calls • Recording patient’s life history • Reminiscing • Sitting with veteran patient while caregiver leaves

The tuck-in volunteer role is a vital one to the hospice team. The tuck-in volunteer offers phone support to patients who reside in a private residence or in a facility. Our goal is for each patient who may be fragile, anxious or who has had a change in the level of care, to receive a tuck-in call prior to the weekend. Tuck-in volunteers provide support to hospice patients and staff by conducting phone calls to patients/families to assure they have the necessary supplies, medications, and/or support.

Pet visitor volunteers assist with providing comfort and emotional support to patients and their families through therapeutic pet visits. There are two components to a pet visitor volunteer: the handler and the pet. It is most common that dogs are pet visitor volunteers; however, other pets (e.g., cats, miniature horses) may be considered pet volunteers as well. Animal–assisted interactions (which includes animal assisted activities or therapy) provide opportunities for motivational, educational, recreational and/or therapeutic benefits to enhance quality of life for patients and families. Animal-assisted interactions are delivered by specifically trained professionals, paraprofessionals, and/or volunteers in association with animals that meet specific criteria. These trained handlers have successfully completed an evaluation and training course that meets the requirements of an appropriate accrediting agency. Approved accrediting agencies include, Pet Partners, Project Canine, Therapy Dog’s International, or Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Other credentialing agencies are reviewed to ensure adherence to industry standards and approved by the volunteer coordinator. Documentation of credentialing is be kept in the handler’s personnel file in accordance with policy. Completion of a good citizen obedience program is not sufficient for pet utilization.
