Refugees and others who have a special status arrive in the United States legally after being forced to flee violence and persecution. Once they arrive in Minnesota, LSS Refugee Services works to secure safe and affordable housing for them, offers employment services and empowers them to achieve self-sufficiency and agency. Mentors act as friends and neighbors to newly arrived refugees and support them as they navigate the challenges of resettlement. 

Goal of Position:

To be a guide and friend for a refugee or refugee couple in their challenging first months in the United States. Each paring will involve setting 2-3 goals/focuses for the mentorship.

Sample Activities:

Teach them how to ride the bus to their ELL class location, grocery store. Visit community resources, like the library, food shelves, and cultural organizations. Practice counting and using American currency. Teach the family how to make a money order and pay rent. Teach a refugee how to use appliances – laundry, stove and oven, thermostat. Help family members learn the English language by practicing with them. Help out with a job application or practice interview skills. Provide transport

Please Note:

A Case Worker works with each refugee for at least their first 90 days in the US.  These first needs are called the “core services,” including housing, furniture, basic household items, medical care, social security, employment authorization documentation, school enrollment. Mentors are not responsible for these services.

Time Commitment:

Mentors make a commitment to meet at least once a week for three months. This has the potential for extension, if all parties are interested in continuing.

Scheduling:

At the discretion of the volunteer and availability of the refugee.

Worksite:

Varies, but will most likely be at the refugee’s home and in the community.

Qualifications:

PPI is a private, non-profit (501 (c) (3)) corporation serving clients in Minnesota and western Wisconsin. The majority of referrals come from the Twin Cities metro area, counties southwest of the Twin Cities as well as counties in southeastern Minnesota. HJC Overview

Housing Justice Center (HJC) is a nonprofit public interest legal and policy advocacy organization dedicated to the production and preservation of affordable housing and the protection of the rights of people who need affordable places to call home. The tools we use for this work are community organizing, research, education, policy advocacy, and legal advocacy.

Our primary goals are to:

Prevent affordable housing loss, tenant displacement, and exploitation of BIPOC (Black, Indigenous, and people of color) households, people with disabilities, and low-wealth people Ensure people have real choices for safe, healthy, affordable, accessible, culturally adaptive, and convenient housing Support communities in building power to drive decision-making about their housing future

HJC VISTA Project Overview

This VISTA project seeks to expand Housing Justice Center’s capacity to address housing instability, the lack of tenant rights knowledge, and limited organizing infrastructure for renters and manufactured housing residents in exurban Minnesota. Key issues include displacement threats, discrimination, mismanagement, unaffordability, and repair problems. This project will focus on the exurban Twin Cities counties of Wright, Sherburne, Isanti, and Chisago. The VISTA Tenant Organizer will build capacity to support low-income disabled, BIPOC, and/or immigrant renters by forging new community partnerships, developing and delivering tenant rights training, and helping create at least one new resident association in a targeted property.

This VISTA Member is part of HOME Line's Tenant Organizing VISTA Project cohort.

VISTA Responsibilities

The HJC VISTA Tenant Organizer will build organizing infrastructure in the targeted counties of Wright, Isanti, Sherburne, and Chisago. Duties include:

Assess the infrastructure needs for sustained tenant organizing in exurban Minnesota Complete a Community Assessment for target counties Develop and implement an outreach plan to connect with community partners and properties for engagement and tenant rights training Develop and deliver tenant rights trainings in target communities Support the creation of one tenant association via organizing activities such as door-knocking, one-to-one meetings, community meetings, and leadership development with residents Work in collaboration with other VISTA members in the HOME Line cohort to support and expand partnerships and complete project goals Engage in professional development activities to support personal leadership and continued growth

AmeriCorps Eligibility Requirements

Must be at least 18 years old. Must have a high school diploma or GED. Some college may be helpful but is not required. Must be a U.S. Citizen or U.S. National or have status as a Lawful Permanent Resident.

Occasional evenings and weekends and travel into the Minneapolis/St Paul area will be required. Some work can be performed remotely; some work must be performed in-person in Wright, Sherburne, Isanti, and Chisago counties. Access to reliable transportation required. VISTA Members serve in a full-time capacity of 40 hours per week during their year-long term of service. Per AmeriCorps, VISTA Members may NOT be in school full-time or have another full-timeposition.

Benefits of Service

Modest Living Allowance ($877.66 pre-tax, biweekly) $400 monthly housing stipend (paid directly to landlord or mortgage provider) Education award of $6,495 annually for each year of service, or an alternative cash stipend of $1,800 upon completion of service year VISTA Healthcare allowance of $7,900 For VISTAs relocating more than 50 miles: $750 settling-in allowance in addition to travel reimbursement Child care assistance Mileage reimbursement Those receiving public assistance (such as Social Security, SNAP/EBT, or housing subsidy) will not have eligibility or level of assistance affected. Are you searching for a craft volunteer opportunity you can do from the comforts of your own home?

Moments Hospice is looking for craft volunteers who are interested in sewing, crocheting, or knitting patriotic wall coverings/blankets. The wall covering should have a patriotic design and be approximately six feet by four feet. These patriotic blankets will be placed over a deceased Veteran, or can be used as a keepsake for the family.

We also need craft volunteers to make fidget blankets, hospital gowns, lavender sachets, rice heating blankets, and Thinking of You cards for our patients.

The tuck-in volunteer role is a vital one to the hospice team. The tuck-in volunteer offers phone support to patients who reside in a private residence or in a facility. Our goal is for each patient who may be fragile, anxious or who has had a change in the level of care, to receive a tuck-in call prior to the weekend. Volunteer: Pet Visitor Volunteer & Petcare

Pet visitor volunteers assist with providing comfort and emotional support to patients and their families through therapeutic pet visits. There are two components to a pet visitor volunteer: the handler and the pet. It is most common that dogs are pet visitor volunteers; however, other pets (e.g., cats, miniature horses) may be considered pet volunteers as well. Animal–assisted interactions (which includes animal assisted activities or therapy) provide opportunities for motivational, educational, recreational and/or therapeutic benefits to enhance quality of life for patients and families. Animal-assisted interactions are delivered by specifically trained professionals, paraprofessionals, and/or volunteers in association with animals that meet specific criteria. These trained handlers have successfully completed an evaluation and training course that meets the requirements of an appropriate accrediting agency. Approved accrediting agencies include, Pet Partners, Project Canine, Therapy Dog’s International, or Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Other credentialing agencies are reviewed to ensure adherence to industry standards and approved by the volunteer coordinator. Documentation of credentialing is be kept in the handler’s personnel file in accordance with policy. Completion of a good citizen obedience program is not sufficient for pet utilization.
