Volunteer: Essentials Drive for Bridging (Roseville)

NOW more than ever, we need your help to serve the mission as we empower people to THRIVE in their homes.

OFFSITE OPPORTUNITY!!! Help Bridging Stock the Shelves! Imagine how you could cook a meal without basic kitchen utensils or sleep without a pillow or blanket?

Thousands of local families and individuals face this situation every day.

By hosting an Essentials Drive at your workplace, faith-based organization, or in your community, you can help provide essential items to households in need while raising awareness. Bridging serves an average of 120 households each week.

Location: Off-site at your work, school, faith-based organization, and in your community.

Organize a drive today! Help us stock the shelves so we can serve over 300 people (120 households) every week. Essential Drives allow us to fill the gaps in donations and make sure families have what they need to fully function in their new home.

Coordinator’s Guide is available with full details to get started. New or gently-used items accepted. Promotional support and templates are available for each type of project.

Types of Essentials Drives:

Blankets: All sizes (twin, full, queen, and king) wanted. We need blankets for over 300 people each week!

Towels: All sizes and types wanted. Our goal is to provide one bath towel per person. That's over 13,000 towels each year!

Kitchen Packs: Include a can opener, mixing spoon, spatula, utility scissors, pizza cutter, and a container to hold items. We need over 120 packs per week to give each home a pack.

Cleaning Kits: Include dish scrubber, rubber gloves, sponges, hard surface scrub brush, dust cloths, and a container to hold items (bucket or shoebox size bin). (No cleansers/chemicals please). We need over 120 packs per week to give each home a kit.

Bridging, a nonprofit organization serving the greater Twin Cities, is the largest furniture bank in North America. Through the effective reuse of donated items, Bridging improves lives by providing quality furniture and household goods to those pursuing housing stability.

Driven by volunteers and donations of furniture and household goods from the community, Bridging has furnished over 120,000 homes since 1987.

NOW more than ever, we need your help to serve the mission as we empower people to THRIVE in their homes.

Volunteer: Sports Gear Drive (Age 14+)

Our mission is to provide free sports equipment, camps, grants and tickets for military families.  Your company could put together a gear drive and fundraiser to support our mission.  Everyone has the extra sets of last year's sizes in the garage, and across the company you could make a large impact.  If that was coupled with a micro fundraiser ($5 per person) across a large company (1000 employees) you'd make a macro impact!

Did you know Minneapolis and St. Paul school districts have 5+% of their students who are experiencing housing insecurity? Additionally, health clinics are finding patients express a need for hygiene items during health screenings.

Let's help address this need by making hygiene kits for struggling individuals and families.

We are looking for businesses, community groups and neighbors to purchase travel/personal size hygiene products and build hygiene kits for students, individuals and families struggling to afford hygiene items.

We ask that all kit items be placed in Ziploc bags and each kit be filled with:

1 full size deodorant1 travel size lotion (up to 3 oz)1 travel size bottle of shampoo (up to 3 oz)1 travel size bottle of conditioner (up to 3 oz)1 comb - preferably wider tooth1 toothbrush with head cover (preferred, but not required)1 toothpaste (up to 3 oz)1 bar of soap

Additional Items to include (but please note that these should be provided in bulk, NOT inside the kits as these items are distributed with personal consideration of the recipient):

1 package of dental floss1 lip balm1 razor1 small package of menstrual pads1 package of body wipes (no water needed)10 laundry detergent sheets

You can see the full list here

Please contact us at hello@bridgetobasics.org to get your full toolkit and register your volunteer activity.  Thank you!!!

Please note: This is a remote opportunity that occurs at your preferred location. Your group will be responsible for the purchasing and assembling of the hygiene kits. Volunteer: Bilingual Wish Granter

Wish granters are essential to fulfilling each child’s wish. They work in teams of two or three and help the wish child determine their heartfelt wish. Wish granters create an exceptional wish experience through building a relationship with the child and their family. Wish children come from all different backgrounds and cultures, so with the help of bilingual wish granters, a wish child can communicate in a language that they are most comfortable with during the wish process! It also greatly reduces the stress for other family members. We welcome all applicants, but have a particular need for volunteers who can speak Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Oromo, and Arabic at any level of proficiency. ASL is also in demand. Training is provided and is flexible with your schedule!

Volunteer: Become a VIRTUAL Neighbor to Neighbor Companion Today! (Age 18 +)

We are seeking dedicated volunteers for our Neighbor to Neighbor Companion service in metro and rural areas of Minnesota. You can make a difference in the life of an older adult, share skills, meet new people and have fun in the community.

COVID-19 Update

Due to the current pandemic, Neighbor to Neighbor Companion services are currently being offered exclusively virtually via phone and video chat. We will transition back to in person visits and reintroduce transportation support when we can do so safely, following state and federal guidelines

Volunteer: Volunteers for Lending Events at South Minneapolis Toy Library (Age 14+)

Thank you for your contribution to this community effort! Lending events wouldn't be possible without your help!

Volunteers help members check toys in-and-out, with our user-friendly, custom-built computer program, as well as keep track of toys in the inventory (counting pieces etc.).

Volunteers also help to re-shelve returned toys and keep the space looking presentable.

Events can be fast-paced and fun! Take some time away from the kids and feel good about helping the community!

We especially need help on the Wednesday evening shift.  This one is difficult for us to fill.  Even an hour or two can really help us out to keep our doors open for lending hours.

Great opportunity for students who need to full fill volunteer hours for school!

Volunteer: Food Shelf Deliveries to Older Adults

Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors (LSHS) and Minnehaha Food Shelf (located in the Minnehaha United Methodist Church, 3701 E. 31st St) joined forces back in August of 2020 with concern for older adults in the community who were unable to pick up their food shelf items in person due to the COVID pandemic.

LSHS continues to provide this food shelf delivery service to older adults in the greater Longfellow neighborhoods, and we are looking for  volunteers who can assist with this program on at least one Tuesday a month.

Volunteers will be asked to work alongside LSHS and Minnehaha Food Shelf staff to choose and pack needed items to be delivered.  The number of clients varies,  but there are no more than 2 delivery stops. This opportunity can be physically demanding, and there is some heavy lifting involved. However, we work as a team to lighten the load.

We are looking for volunteers who can commit to at least one Tuesday morning a month for 1.5 -2.0 hours.

Do you love to cook?! We are looking for volunteers to make and deliver a meal to one of our many residential group homes located throughout the Western Metro. Homemade meals offer so much comfort and will allow 6-8 staff and residents the opportunity to enjoy a dinner together. Make meals in the convenience of your own home! Choose what you make, or we can provide a list of suggestions. We will work with you to coordinate your delivery as a "one time" or as an "on-going" opportunity. This is so much fun to do as an individual or with your family, work group, corporate group, or book club!
