CEAP Meals on Wheels delivers hot, nutritious, lunch-time meals for 450 seniors and individuals in 9 cities who are not able to prepare meals or leave their homes. Our Meals on Wheels neighbors are active participants in a collective effort to grow a more equitable, healthy, and joyful community through access to food, while enjoying the comfort and safety of their own homes. Volunteer: Distribution Center Support in St Paul

Every year, Catholic Charities serves over one million healthy meals and snacks and provides supplies to nearly 20,000 people most in need in our community. At the Catholic Charities Distribution Center (CCDC), we receive large donations of food and other new and unused clothing and household, personal care and supplies that are distributed to our client programs and 11 food service sites throughout the Twin Cities.

Volunteer: Dakota County Adopt a Highway Program (Age 1 +)

The Adopt-a-Highway Program looks for volunteers to collect litter along designated segments of County highways to help keep roadsides clean. Coordination of the program and supplies (safety vests, trash bags and training) are provided by the Dakota County Transportation Department.

Getting Started

Individuals or groups commit to cleaning up their designated roadway segment as a onetime commitment or more. To apply, fill out a volunteer application and we will review the section of road desired to make sure it is open for adoption. Once your application clears, your group is ready to go!

The Transportation Department maintenance crew will pick up and dispose of filled bags and other debris, left at the side of the road.

Free Recognition Signs

Individuals or groups agreeing to contribute time to clean up the roadway twice a year (spring & fall) for a minimum of two years, will receive a 24” by 30” recognition signs, installed free for their contribution. The Opportunity
Supper Club is one of our longest-running programs. Individuals, pairs, or small groups (max 4 people) prepare, serve, share, and clean up after the evening meal for 4 neighbors living in one of our South Minneapolis community care homes. More important than the meal itself, they offer companionship and community. If you like to cook, eat, and/or build community, come join the Supper Club!

Note: if possible, we ask Supper Club volunteers to commit to a regular shift at their designated care home (at least monthly), which helps deepen relationship and strengthen community.

The Alliance for the Great Lakes is a nonpartisan nonprofit working across the Great Lakes region to protect our most precious resource: the fresh, clean, and natural waters of the Great Lakes. We are active in advocacy, volunteering, education, and research. One of the ways to advance our efforts is by becoming an Alliance Ambassador.

The Opportunity

While dining at a restaurant or getting take-out can be a fun treat, there is nothing quite like a home-cooked meal that brings up sweet memories or connects us to familial and cultural heritage. As many have said, it often contains a special ingredient: love!

If you enjoy food and believe in its power to connect (even if you don’t consider yourself a gourmet cook), we invite you to prepare a meal for those in our Community Care Homes! Each home houses 4 residents and is staffed around the clock by 1-2 caregivers. While the caregivers often prepare meals for the house, it’s a relief for them to simply be able to pull something out of the fridge or freezer and heat it up when days get unexpectedly busy.

You can prepare a meal for 4-6 folks at home, drop it off at your convenience, and savor the sweetness of knowing that your meal will provide nutrition, comfort, and wellbeing for your neighbors.

Note: we welcome one-time volunteers for this opportunity, as well as those who can make an ongoing commitment (monthly, weekly, biweekly, etc.)

Folks often move in to Clare Housing with some personal items, but not all they need to set up their new homes. While we can connect them to furniture, we invite our community to welcome new residents by providing some other household essentials.

The total cost of putting together a welcome basket of new items is about $500, with each one including:

Small Appliances (coffee maker, microwave, toaster oven, etc.) Utensils Dishes Pots & Pans Sheets & Towels Cleaning Supplies Paper Products Large, lidded, plastic storage containers

Residents in our Scattered Site program receive a rental subsidy and live independently in homes throughout the Twin Cities Metro area. The program provides a high amount of dignified choice and independence, which sometimes means folks move to communities that are not conveniently located to resources in the city centers (food shelves, county offices, etc.).

In particular, we have many participants who are members of The Aliveness Project, a partner organization serving neighbors living with HIV. Aliveness runs an excellent, high-quality food shelf in South Minneapolis, which some of our participants aren’t easily able to get to.

Help folks access this amazing resource by serving as a Transportation Aide! Our case management staff will schedule food shelf appointments with residents, and you’ll provide the wheels to get there (along with companionship and connection, of course!).

The Master Water Stewards program certifies and supports community leaders to protect and improve the health of MN's water. Wherever you live, you can join over 250 Master Water Steward volunteers and work in our own community to contribute to the millions of gallons of polluted stormwater that stewards are keeping out of our lakes and rivers each year.

HAFA is open to ALL volunteers but have a higher demand for volunteers who can volunteer during the weekdays on M/T/W! Hours will vary but duties in demand will be during the afternoon hours from 12:00-3:00 PM! 

Common duties may include but are not limited to:

The primary job of the Volunteer is to be a friendly face.  Because we work with children and vulnerable adults, Volunteers must pass a background check including fingerprinting. The reward of serving this beautiful community is worth the process. 

This particular shift is an important time, as many of our school age patrons visit the library during this shift. The perfect candidate likes working with children and is willing to tutor them in elementary reading.

Volunteer: Seasonal Lawn Mowing for Seniors (Hennepin County)

Enjoy some fresh air and sunshine while helping older adults keep their lawn looking great! This service also provides social interaction and offers peace of mind for loved ones and caregivers.

This is a seasonal commitment (generally May - November) and volunteers are expected to mow the lawn every 7-10 days (depending upon weather conditions), including basic trimming as needed.

You must be:
- At least 16 years old
- Physically able to do the work (lift 20+ pounds, bend, stretch, etc.)
- Able to provide and transport your own equipment (lawnmower and weed trimmer)!

We serve multiple cities in Hennepin County, and our highest need is currently in Minneapolis and Robbinsdale.

Volunteer shifts are 1-3 hours during your choice of Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday evenings.

The primary volunteer role is walking alongside the participant as they ride their horse during the lesson. “Sidewalkers” follow direction from PATH Intl. certified instructors to support the rider as they perform the lesson skill or activity while promoting their independence and are VITAL for rider success. Volunteers with horse experience may have the opportunity to be part of the team by leading the horse during the lesson.

Our carriage driving program offers volunteer opportunities to help get the horse ready for the lesson and assist the participant during their lesson.

There are many additional ways to donate your time and talent to help us achieve our mission including: photography, creative writing, fundraising, gardening, and more!

 

REQUIREMENTS

Volunteer: Clubhouse Gilda Greeter

A Gilda Greeter is often the first person someone with cancer or their family members talks to at Gilda's Club Minnesota. They are the first impression of our program. Gilda Greeters welcome members into the clubhouse, manage light administrative tasks, tidy the clubhouse, and occasionally do other tasks.

 

These positions have shifts scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The shifts are released in 12-week periods, coinciding with each new calendar period (January-March, April-June, July-September, October-December).

Greeters can start at any time during each period.

A Gilda Greeter is often the first person someone with cancer or their family members talks to at Gilda's Club Minnesota. They are the first impression of our program. Gilda Greeters welcome members into the clubhouse, manage light administrative tasks, tidy the clubhouse, and occasionally do other tasks.

 

These positions have shifts scheduled for Mondays, Tuesdays, and Thursdays. The shifts are released in 12-week periods, coinciding with each new calendar period (January-March, April-June, July-September, October-December).

SACA Food Shelf gives out groceries to residents who face food insecurity and who need help stretching their tight food budgets at home. Food is distributed weekly Monday 9am-4:00pm, Tuesday 8am - 4:00pm, Wednesday 10am - 6:00pm and Thursday 8am - 3:00pm.


Food market volunteers provide basic support services, including stocking shelves and helping clients shop for food, clean up, and other tasks required for service. Volunteers may assist one day or make a regular commitment depending on their schedule. Special opportunities for translation are needed, especially for Spanish speakers.

We require prior parental written permission that applicant will receive after completing the volunteer application. The 14 and 15 year old youth can volunteer when accompanied by their parent or guardian. The 16 and 17 year old youth can volunteer by themselves with our Food Shelf.

When you arrive for your shift, please use the back door of the Food Shelf to enter and wash your hands in the breakroom or bathroom. Please sign in to utilizing the kiosk in the hydration room to record your time in and please remember to sign out at the end of your shift too. Report to the Food Shelf staff for your assignment.

 

How to Dress and What to Bring

Please wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet from boxes and pallets. No sandals please. Please dress modestly with shorts that come to the knee or long pants and short or long sleeves. We ask volunteers to come with their own cloth-mask on their face and you may swap it for a NorthPoint disposable mask once you arrive. There will be bottled drinking water on site but you are also encouraged to bring your own reusable water bottle. Hand sanitizer will be available throughout the site.

The NorthPoint Health Food Shelf is located at 1835 Penn Avenue North in Minneapolis on the corner of Penn and Golden Valley Road. Please use on-street parking for your vehicle. We save the parking lot on the south side of the building for customers.

Volunteer: Help Refurbish Gently Used Bikes for Kids! (Groups and Individuals Ages 12 +)

Join Free Bikes 4 Kidz MN for a unique opportunity to refurbish gently used bikes and distribute them to communities who need them. Every year we collect thousands of bikes that we dust off, clean up and fix. Because of the work of our amazing volunteers, we expect to give away almost 15,000 bikes this year all while adhering to Covid protocols.

Volunteer shifts are a minimum of 3 hours and run Tuesday through Saturday this year.

This is a great opportunity for individuals or groups. And with chaperones, it is an excellent volunteer opportunity for youth over the age of 12.

Warehouse Job Descriptions: 

Cleaner: Clean, shine, and scrub bikes. No bike maintenance skills necessary.

Prepper: Must have experience changing tires and tubes, replace seats, pedals and grips. 

Mechanic: Must have experience adjusting bottom brackets and derailleurs, truing wheels, fixing brakes etc.

Mover: Must be able to walk for extended periods of time and lift bikes of all sizes (15-50 pounds). No bike maintenance skills necessary.

Volunteers are not expected to, nor should they be asked to help the clients in the bathroom, with medications or other personal tasks. Our current volunteers really like the bond they build with the families and how much of an impact they make on our clients’ lives. Everyone in your small group would go through training and, when a good match is found, meet the family. Then the small group would work together so one or two people would be with the caregiver for at least two hours every week. We have no set time for volunteers and clients to meet so you can volunteer on your schedule. We do ask for a 3-month commitment.

Volunteer: Memory Loss Assistant Field Trip Guide

Who didn’t love going on a field trip in school? Going to different sites, learning something new, and just getting the chance to get out of school. FamilyMeans Community Connection takes the fun of a field trip and applies to adults with early-stage memory loss. During a Community Connection we meet at a set location and each week explore different topics or do different activities. This gets our clients out of the house and participate in activities that are designed specifically for them. You will not be asked to drive clients you just simply have to show up at the proper location.

 

We need people who are willing to attend these sessions and help provide a fun and safe environment for our clients. This could mean helping to set up and clean up after activities, being a discussion guide, and helping clients participate in activities.  

 

We ask volunteers stay for an entire session which is 4 hours (1/2 hour before, 3 hours program and ½ hour afterward). Sessions will be weekly for 4 to 6 weeks. It would be great if a volunteer could attend every session but we don’t require it.

The Project Success Institute is committed to empowering high school students by providing them with unique opportunities to explore new experiences, develop life skills, and discover exciting career paths through our certificate programs. We offer free classes to all MPS high school students in subjects including bike tech, money management, baking, and coding. 

As a volunteer coach for the Institute, you will play a crucial role in guiding and mentoring students on their journey of self-discovery. Your primary responsibilities will include facilitating conversations, asking thought-provoking questions, and actively engaging with students to drive their learning and interest. You will also have the opportunity to share your own real-life experiences, providing valuable insights and inspiration. Previous experience in the subject is NOT necessary to be a coach at the Institute. We believe that anyone with a passion for motivating young minds and a desire to learn will be an excellent coach.

Complete our Project Success Volunteer Interest Form to introduce yourself and share your volunteer interests. You will then be contacted by one of our staff members via email regarding your interests. All volunteers working directly with students must consent to a background check and COVID-19 related requirements.  

Volunteer Coach Opportunities  

Baking Coach  Volunteer baking coaches help students learn the basics of home baking in hands-on workshops on Wednesday evenings from 4:30pm – 6:30pm.   Coding Coach  Volunteer coding coaches help to provide students with a welcoming and enthusiastic introduction to coding on Thursday evenings from 4:30pm – 6:30pm.

We are seeking a board member with a strong background in fundraising, grant writing, and/or donor relations. This board member would play a significant role in mentoring and assisting our organization to raise funding for our concert seasons and expand our donor base. As a part of our strong commitment to diversity, we highly encourage BIPOC candidates to apply for this position. 

 

Board Responsibilities

Serve a 2 year term Attend 3 scheduled board meetings in the fiscal year virtually or in-person Serve on fundraising committee and attend meetings as necessary Advise the organization’s Director of Fundraising in identifying new donors, new sources of funding, and brainstorming fundraising campaigns for Give to the Max and an annual summer fundraiser event Reviewing and evaluating KPIs set for the fiscal year Partnering with other board members to ensure the organization’s mission and resolutions are being carried out Upholding the organization’s commitment to diversity and inclusion Represent and act as an ambassador to the organization’s mission and presence in the Minneapolis-St. Paul community

These special volunteers bring peace and dignity to patients who are dying alone or when family members request additional support. Vigil volunteers help complete our circle of care to ensure that patients die feeling valued, loved, and wholly supported on their journey.

Volunteers are provided free training and work flexible hours. Background check, fingerprinting, and TB testing required. 

Please note: If you have recently lost a family member or dear friend, we encourage you to wait a minimum of 13 months following the death to apply to serve as a hospice volunteer.
