Volunteer: Board Member

About the Sexual Violence Center (SVC)

The Sexual Violence Center (SVC) believes no one impacted by sexual violence should navigate alone. We know sexual violence affects people of all genders and backgrounds, and we are here to help everyone who has experienced any form of sexual violence. We offer free, supportive services in Carver, Hennepin, and Scott Counties, including: 24-hour crisis support, medical advocacy, support groups, individual counseling, education, and legal advocacy. Learn more: www.sexualviolencecenter.org.

About the board of directors

The purpose of the board of directors is to guide and grow SVC’s work toward a world free from sexual violence. We are seeking a diverse and enthusiastic group of candidates to join our volunteer board. Joining the board is a great way to build community with other folks fighting for a world free of sexual violence.

Board members serve two-year terms, for no more than five consecutive terms, and help SVC with strategic governance, fundraising, fiduciary oversight, and support the executive director who manages day-to-day operations. The average board member commitment is six hours per month – which includes 12 meetings per year, committee participation, meeting preparation, new member orientation, board retreat, and occasional SVC events.

To the best of their ability, the SVC board of directors are responsible for:

Strategic leadership

Ensure the mission of SVC is well understood and embraced by the board, and to work with the executive director to occasionally evaluate the mission and purpose. Help set short and long-term SVC strategic priorities, and dedicate resources to achieve these goals. Serve on at least one board committee, including: Governance, Finance, Fundraising, and Executive Committee.

Healthy governance

Support board bylaws, structures, committees, and policies to achieve healthy governance. Prepare in advance, attend, and participate in board meetings; ask questions and exercise independent judgement to take responsibility for making board decisions. Recruit and support new board members, and develop succession plans for board leadership.

Supporting the executive director

Contribute to the hiring and annual performance evaluation of the executive director; collaborate to determine how best to support their day-to-day work. Serve as a trusted advisor to the executive director as they lead SVC and implement the Strategic Plan.

Financial stability

Oversee financial performance and monitor financial results for risk management, service delivery, and commitment to mission. Provide oversight of SVC financials to ensure federal and state reporting compliance, including audits of financial statements and approving the annual budget. Support SVC fundraising efforts and actively participate through personal contributions and/or generating support for SVC.

Acting and serving as an SVC ambassador

Make a meaningful annual contribution that aligns with your financial capacity. Attend SVC events as an ambassador to establish connections that can benefit SVC’s mission and programming. Spread the word about SVC’s impact in your networks and communities.

What are we looking for in a candidate?

Because we are a small and active board, the most important quality of any candidate is a commitment and passion for SVC’s mission, and a willingness to energetically engage and support the organization.

Candidates should have the capacity to join an active governing board, which includes fiduciary oversight, fundraising, strategic governance, supporting the executive director, participating in monthly meetings outside work hours, and attending SVC events. You should have the ability to attend board meetings, scheduled on:

Full Board Meetings: 2nd Wednesday of the month, 6:30pm – 8:30pm Finance Committee: 1st Wednesday of the month, 6pm – 7pm Governance Committee: 3rd Wednesday of the month, 6pm – 7pm Fundraising Committee: 4th Wednesday of the month, 6pm – 7pm

Board members are expected to attend 11 of the 12 full board meetings annually and serve on at least one committee. All meetings are currently virtual, but we hope to move at least full board meetings back to in-person in the future.

Below are specific needs we’ve identified as an organization. If you see yourself in even one of these needs, we especially welcome your application. Prior board experience is a large consideration.

Experience in a board leadership role and understanding of how a high functioning board operates. Legal knowledge, especially in the areas of social service or nonprofit law, or a familiarity with the dynamics of sexual violence and the law. Knowledge of the Hennepin, Carver and Scott County criminal justice systems is a plus. Human Resources experience. Accounting and/or finance experience.

Volunteer: POSITION: Member of the Board of Directors (Expertise in the following areas especially sought but not required: Finance, Accounting, Law, Public Relations and Marketing),

In 2025, Our Saviour’s Community Services specifically seeks new Members of the Board of Directors with professional experience in areas of Finance, Accounting, Law, Public Relations and Marketing.

WHO ARE WE?

Our Saviour’s Community Services (OSCS) walks with people in community in the heart of Phillips, one of the most diverse neighborhoods in South Minneapolis. We provide dignified shelter and housing for single adults and education for adult English language learners through our two programs – Our Saviour’s Housing and the English Learning Center.

Approximately three-quarters of our participants are BIPOC, and roughly 60% of our 35 employees share that identity. Historically, our board composition has lagged behind the diversity of our staff and participants in several dimensions, including racial diversity.

Our Board is examining and addressing contributing factors to our current composition and we welcome applicants to the Board who are dedicated to this work. As one example, in early 2023, we updated our organization’s bylaws to increase the accessibility and inclusion of Board membership.

WHO ARE YOU?

Strong candidates will have:

● A passion and commitment to engage in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging work on personal, organizational, and systemic levels.

● Comfort performing fiduciary oversight for OSCS, balancing the need for feasibility with a focus on equitable financial decision making.

● A willingness to engage in critical, creative, and strategic thought.

● Interest in joining a vibrant group of committed volunteers, and

● A desire to share and/or gain skills in strategic planning, financial oversight, and governance.

● Varied and diverse identities and perspectives. We serve a community diverse in age, country of origin, cultural background, educational background, financial background, gender identity, language, race, and religion and family composition. We strive to create a board that adequately reflects these identities and experiences.

In 2025, we are focused on adding candidates to our board who bring -- among other talents -- experience with law, finance and/or accounting, public relations and/or marketing.

Board applications are accepted on an annual basis, and focus areas change from year to year.

All candidates must have:

● Expertise gained through living in the community, or in a relevant and needed area such as adult education/ESL, engagement/marketing, fundraising, governance, government, healthcare management, housing, human resources, legal expertise, leadership experience, and non-profit finance

● A willingness to financially contribute to OSCS as your household is able.

● Consistent time (2-4 hrs./month) to dedicate to participating in monthly board and committee work. The board typically meets on the last Monday of the month at 6PM and alternates between one in person meeting and one virtual meeting each trimester.

● The ability to serve at least one 2-year term and up to 3 concurrent terms.

This can consist of playing games, having conversations, doing other activities or just being there with the care receiver. Volunteers are asked to volunteer 3 hours a week. These times are flexible and can be done at whatever time works best for you and the family you are matched with. This can be done individually, as a family project, or as a small group.

Is this opportunity right for me…

Current FamilyMeans in-home respite differ greatly in their personalities and why they chose this option. Here are some of the reasons why volunteers chose this option and continue volunteering.

o   They appreciated flexible hours. There is no set time so volunteers can volunteer at times that fit their schedule.

o   Some volunteers enjoy being one on one with people rather than being in a group setting.

o   Some volunteers really like the social aspect of this opportunity. Since we carefully match volunteers and clients based on personalities and interests, to them it feels like spending 3 hours with a friend.

o   Some volunteers like the gratification that comes with this opportunity. Volunteers get to see how the work they do benefits the caregiver.

Sponsor a meal with a financial donation and let RMH do all the menu planning and grocery shopping. Your team is welcomed onsite to cook and serve. Plan your own menu and purchase/bring your own ingredients onsite to prepare and serve a meal. Cater in a meal from a favorite restaurant.

Volunteer: Family Engagement Program Volunteer (18+)

Are you looking for a fun volunteer opportunity, and a chance to work directly with the families being served? We are currently looking to recruit volunteers to help us with our monthly "Family Game Nights" and "Family Movie Nights" at People Serving People's downtown shelter.

The Family Engagement Program aims to provide stress relief, community building and meaning making for families living in shelter by building an engrossing, entertaining and enriching menu of family activities.

Tasks include assisting staff in the set-up and cleanup of the event, facilitate games for children and families, participate in activities alongside families, and distributing/restocking snacks and beverages. In addition, volunteers may be asked to help with check-in to track total number of families participating and to welcome families to the engagement.

The event is an "open house” activity for families, meaning the amount of participation for our guests may vary. We ask our volunteers to be adaptable to PSP to changes in need or activities as they arise.

These events are open to all our families, though you will primarily be working with children between the ages of 6 -12. We welcome volunteers to bring any age appropriate games that they'd like to offer to guests at our shelter!

Volunteer: Store Cat Caretaker (Highland Park Petco)

Twin Cities Pet Rescue is partnering with the Petco store in St. Paul (Highland Park) to house store cats for adoption! We need volunteers that can check in on the cats, deep clean their condos, and provide additional enrichment for the kitties while they are waiting to be adopted!

Volunteers can choose their own schedule and can visit the store as often as once a month to a couple times a week. Times are also very flexible and just need to be within store hours. We use the Slack app to connect the store cat team with each other and share updates on visits. So having a mobile phone or computer that can access the internet is important. Visits are typically 30 mins each but can be longer if you want! Overall, this is a very flexible role that provides hands-on cat care without having kitties physically in your home!

If interested, please submit a volunteer application here:

Volunteer: Dakota County Natural Resources Habitat Stewards

General Description

Help us showcase what Minnesota natives have to offer while supporting healthy habitats in Lebanon Hills Regional Park. Habitat Stewards focus on maintaining designated areas that have been planted with native grasses and wildflowers in highly visible areas of our parks. These locations provide pollinator habitat as well as serve as demonstration gardens for park visitors that will hopefully inspire folks to “go native” in their own backyards.

Tasks will vary for each shift but will include general garden maintenance such as weeding, pruning, watering, planting, etc. No knowledge of plants or gardening is needed, in fact, volunteers will learn about plant identification, gardening skills, and habitat restoration practices related to native plants during their time in the gardens by seasoned professionals and county staff.

Great program for all ages and walks of life - many hands make lighter work. A tidy garden is an eye-catching way for people to learn more about pollinators and pollinating plants and the important roles they play in our lives. Help us keep this area bloomin’ and boomin’!

Location

Lebanon Hills Regional Park - Visitor Center Backyard

860 Cliff Road

Eagan, MN 55123

Date/Time

Varying scheduled shifts available with more times likely available to help manage the garden throughout the season. Come as often as you’re able. No shift minimums.

Age Requirements

All ages are welcomed to attend but we do encourage participants to be at least 5 years old or older to properly enjoy the event. If minors want to volunteer by themselves, they need to be 16 years old or older.

Minimum Time Commitment

Shifts will be 2-3 hours. You are welcome to sign-up for as many shifts as you are available for.

Activity Level – If working outside or non-office work.

Volunteer: Lung Cancer Patient Support Peer-to Peer Companion

ABOH volunteer Peer-to-Peer Companions have been through the cancer journey and simply want to help others. Their role is to listen and offer hope and companionship during the emotional roller coaster of a cancer diagnosis. They provide emotional support to patients and caregivers through texts, phone calls, and virtual or in-person meetings. Connecting with an ABOH companion who has experienced a cancer diagnosis can provide a great deal of support and connection.

Lung cancer places a great burden on families, and some lung cancer patients lack the support they need to achieve the best outcomes during their journey. Lung cancer carries an unkind stigma that often leaves patients feeling shamed and blamed. A Breath of Hope works to reduce the burden of lung cancer by offering services to fill in the care gaps. Hope and positive energy are known to bring healing. Every time we support lung cancer patients and their families, we have made a step forward in our battle to save lives and improve quality of life during the journey.

Time Commitment

Support volunteers have the freedom to volunteer as often as they wish and may say no when the requested drive time or location doesn’t work for them. ABOH does not require a minimum time commitment.

Volunteer: Mentor Teens in North Minneapolis

Young Life doesn't start with a program. It starts with adults who are concerned enough about kids to go to them, on their turf and in their culture, building bridges of authentic friendship. These relationships don't happen overnight — they take time, patience, trust and consistency.

Our Mission

Introducing adolescents to Jesus Christ and helping them grow in their faith if they desire.

Volunteer leaders are asked to build authentic relationships with teens and walk alongside them through life in high school regardless of their response to faith.

Fundraising:

Art, Heart and Hoofbeats - Equine Rescue and Sanctuary is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that runs entirely on donations. We are always on the look out for help in procuring monetary donations and sponsorship, both private and corporate. We also often need individuals to collect donations of goods and services for special events (for example, gift cards and items for silent auctions). We have also received many wonderful donations from clubs, groups, and individuals who have chosen to hold a “AHH Benefit” Event. Some ideas for this would be fun shows, tack sales, rummage sales, bake sales, or informational booths at local feed or tack stores. If you are interested in holding this sort of fundraiser to help the horses and people served at AHH, please let us know!

Volunteer: Equine hands on feeding, brushing, cleaning stalls, animal pens, all around farm work - training provided

Hands on volunteer opportunities- many of the equines at the AHH farm have come from neglect or abuse situations, they often have trust issues or are relatively unhandled at intake. Because of this, we are only able to offer these “hands-on” opportunities to volunteers who are willing and have time to learn about our horses. For safety reasons we are not able to allow volunteers to ride horses at the AHH farm.

Volunteer: Technology Buddy for a Senior

Are you good with technology? As a DARTS Tech Buddy, you can use your tech skills to empower older adults to better understand and use everyday technology to stay connected. You will work alongside older adults to confidently utilize technology in their lives.

Do I need to be a tech expert? Basic computer, tablet, and smart phone skills are all you need.

What’s the time commitment? We can work with you and your schedule. A typical Tech Buddy visit takes 30 minutes to an hour, and we match you with older adults as they call in with tech requests.

What will I help with?*

-         Answer tech questions to the best of your ability

-         Provide education on technology topics such as video calls, photo storage, customizing settings, using the internet, downloading apps, using calendars, etc.

-         Facilitate conversations with older adults around how they currently use technology and if there are technology solutions that could benefit their lives

-         Listen for warning signs of scams

*Tech Buddies will not help with fixing hardware, password recovery, managing financial or health information.
