Opportunities From: HandsOn Twin Cities

Volunteer: Free Fresh Food Friday

Free Fresh Food Fridays will take place on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of May through September. During each event, we transform our parking lot into a vibrant, farmers' market–style space where community members can select fresh produce at no cost. It’s an energetic and meaningful morning made possible by dedicated volunteers.

Volunteers arrive at 7:30 a.m. for a brief welcome and orientation with our food shelf team, followed by setting up tents and preparing for distribution. From 9:00–11:00 a.m., volunteers assist in distributing fresh food to approximately 300–400 community members. Afterward, the team works together to clean up, with the event typically concluding by noon.

Each event requires 40 volunteers, and it’s a fun, hands-on opportunity to make a real difference. Many teams enjoy the chance to serve side-by-side while supporting the community in a meaningful way.

Volunteer: Project Manager Volunteer

Purpose, Impact & Opportunities:

Project Managers support FFEN’s Process Improvement services by guiding food shelf projects from initiation through close. Using project management and change management skills, they help ensure projects stay on track, engage the right expertise at the right time, and center the shopper experience throughout the process. This role translates complex operational and space-design needs into clear, achievable plans that result in welcoming, efficient food shelf environments.

Minnesota’s food shelves—many of them volunteer-run—often lack the capacity to manage large-scale changes. In this role, you’ll use your skills to define project scope, including timelines, milestones, budget, and required expertise. You’ll provide critical coordination and support to keep projects moving forward while ensuring solutions reflect each food shelf’s unique needs. Your work will help elevate the voice and experience of shoppers in service design and delivery.

As a volunteer, you will:

Contribute to a mission-driven organization supporting the sustainability of Minnesota’s food shelves Build meaningful relationships with partners across nonprofit, for-profit, and public sectors Gain insight into the complexities of hunger relief and food access systems Develop skills in project management, organizational change, supply chain, and food shelf operations

You’ll collaborate closely with FFEN staff and fellow volunteers who are passionate about food access, problem-solving, and continuous learning. FFEN’s culture is curious, caring, and community-minded—balancing strong technical expertise with a relational and supportive approach.

Role Responsibilities

Project Management & Planning: Lead projects from initiation to close, developing project charters, plans, and timelines while tracking progress and managing risks. Process Facilitation: Facilitate key meetings, site visits, and project closeout activities following FFEN’s process. Subject Matter Expert Support: Coordinate with layout designers and other subject matter experts, support site assessments, and manage reviews and final handoffs of deliverables. Stakeholder Management: Build relationships with food shelves and partners, ensuring clear communication and supporting change management. Communication & Documentation: Share meeting recaps, provide regular updates, and complete final project summaries.

Support & Resources

Project management guide and templates Monthly meetings with fellow volunteers FFEN staff support, including regular online check-ins as needed

Skills & Requirements

Experience in project management, operations, or related coordination roles Strong facilitation, organization, and communication skills ●Comfort managing multiple stakeholders and supporting change across diverse communities Proficiency with Zoom, email, Google Suite, and project management tools Curiosity, flexibility, patience, and a collaborative mindset

Volunteer: Sewing Teachers & Teachers' Aides

Do you like to sew? Do you like talking about sewing and helping other people learn to sew? Do you want to do something concrete to support & build connection with African communities in the Twin Cities? Then you've gotta come hang out with us.

Under One Roof Fiber Arts provides free sewing classes to African immigrants in the Twin Cities. All of our classes are volunteer-run, and we are always looking for more people who want to share their sewing skills while hanging out with a bunch of cool women.

Okay but what does that actually mean?

We're looking for both Teachers & Teacher's Aides. We need both people who are comfortable leading a class and people who'd rather assist and help answer student questions. Scheduling is as flexible as you need it to be. We've got ongoing classes as well as one-time classes, so you can help out every Weds morning or you can teach a class once a month. We appreciate whatever time you're willing to donate. We just want to make it easy for you to come in and share your knowledge. All of our students are African immigrants and most speak English as a second (or third or fourth) language. Some are new arrivals who are still learning the basics.  It's okay if you don't have a ton of experience working with ESL students, but you do need to be open to working with people who are different from you and maybe learning new & better ways to communicate across language barriers. Unless you're also an African immigrant, then it probably won't be anything new (and you can totally both be a volunteer and also take a class if there's something that's a new skill for you).Really we're just trying to have fun and sew together, so if you've gotten this far, just send a message and let's figure out a way for you to get involved.

Volunteer: Knitting & Crochet Teachers & Teachers' Aides

Do you like to knit and/or crochet? (Are you some kind of magician who likes doing both?) Do you like showing other people how to do those things? Do you want to support and build connection with the African communities of the Twin Cities? Ooh do I have good news for you.

Under One Roof Fiber Arts provides free sewing/knitting/etc classes to African immigrants in the Twin Cities. All of our classes are volunteer-run, and we are always looking for more people who want to share their skills while hanging out with a bunch of cool women. You do not need to be an expert--we're really just trying to build community by sharing skills and making things together.

Okay but what does that actually mean?

IMPORTANT! Right at this exact moment, we're only holding classes in St. Paul, but we're hoping to expand to satellite locations around the metro in 2026. So if you don't want to drive to St. Paul all the time but you do want to hang out and knit, send a message anyway and we can make some plans for the future.

Volunteer: Be BOLD! Be a mentor! (Age 21+)

Mentor a Young Person. Be the Steady Presence They Need.

Bolder Options mentors build meaningful, one-to-one relationships with diverse young people ages 10–14 by showing up consistently, listening, and offering encouragement. At a time when many youth are navigating stress, uncertainty, and big transitions, mentors provide something powerful: a reliable, positive adult presence.

You don’t need to have all the answers — just a willingness to care and grow alongside a young person.

What Mentoring Looks Like (Year One)

Our first-year mentoring program is relationship-based, with a strong foundation in physical wellness and goal setting.

As a mentor, you will:

Spend 2–4 hours per week with your mentee for one year

Engage in accessible physical activities together (walking, biking, gym time, sports, movement of all kinds)

Support your mentee in setting and working toward personal goals

Build trust through consistency, encouragement, and shared experiences

Activities are flexible and tailored to your mentee’s interests and abilities — you do not need to be an athlete or expert.

What Makes a Great Mentor

The most impactful mentors are:

Reliable and consistent

Good listeners who are curious and open-minded

Willing to try new things and meet youth where they are

Positive role models who believe in young people’s potential

Mentors come from all walks of life. What matters most is your commitment to showing up with care and respect.

A Long-Term Commitment to Youth

Bolder Options is committed to walking alongside young people beyond the first year. After completing the initial mentoring program, youth are invited into our alumni program, which offers:

Continued connection to caring adults

Group activities and leadership opportunities

Support with career exploration, post-secondary planning, and life skills

Our goal is to stay connected with youth through high school and into career and/or college pathways.

What You Can Expect From Us

Mentoring is free to you. Mentors are fully supported through:

A dedicated support staff member

Training and ongoing check-ins

Weekly activity ideas planned by staff

Free or low-cost tickets to local activities

YMCA membership for you and your mentee

Mentor Requirements

To ensure safe, consistent relationships, mentors must:

1) Be 21 years or older. 2) Have reliable access to a car. 3) Commit to meeting weekly for one year. 4) Complete an application, interview, background check, and orientation. Mentoring requires regular in-person connection. Long travel distances can make it difficult to sustain weekly meetings, so we prioritize mentors who live close to our service areas (within 20 min drive).

About Bolder Options

Bolder Options is a youth mentoring nonprofit focused on healthy youth development, blending physical activity, emotional wellness, goal setting, and community connection. We are proud to be an LGBTQ+ Ally Site and intentionally create inclusive environments where all youth and mentors belong.

Volunteer: Therapist

At Options for Women East we provide free therapy sessions to our prenatal moms as added support.  The therapy sessions can be conducted on-line, or in person.  Currently, some women come to the clinic and log into their virtual visit, others log on from home.  We have added nursing staff so we can increase the number of women that we are seeing, which means more therapist needs.

All women are pregnant and receive services through Options for Women East at no charge.  Most do not have insurance when they come to us, we help them get insurance so that when baby is born there is coverage for all.

Days and times for this are flexible, depending on volunteer schedule.  e-mail volunteersb@optionsforwomeneast.com if interested.

Volunteer Opportunity: Nail Care Companions for Seniors

We’re looking for caring and friendly volunteers to bring a little sparkle and joy to our senior residents at Como Care Center, The Heritage Apartments, and our Lino Lakes facility. Your time and creativity can make a big difference by helping residents feel pampered and cared for through simple nail care and polish sessions.

In Lino Lakes this activity is known as Polish and Pamper. At the Como campus it's called Fancy Fingers. Whatever we call it, residents and volunteers love the activity!

What You’ll Do:

Gently prepare residents’ nails for polishing Remove old nail polish with care File nails to smooth and shape (please note: no cutting of fingernails is allowed) Assist residents in choosing their next nail color — a fun way to express personality and brighten their day Apply fresh nail polish neatly and beautifully

Volunteer: Make a Difference: Assist Residents with Wheelchairs at Onsite Worship Services

Sunday Service Volunteers

At Lyngblomsten, Spiritual Care Services are a cherished time for residents to gather in the Chapel for reflection, prayer, and fellowship. For many, this weekly service provides comfort, connection, and a sense of peace that enriches their emotional and spiritual well-being. However, most of our residents require assistance getting to and from the Chapel and this is where volunteers play an essential role.

We are seeking compassionate volunteers to help transport residents safely and comfortably to the Chapel each Sunday morning from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Volunteers may assist by pushing wheelchairs, offering a steady arm for support, or simply providing friendly conversation along the way. This small act of service makes a tremendous difference—ensuring that every resident who wishes to attend has the opportunity to do so.

Volunteering in this way is more than just helping with transportation; it’s about building relationships and sharing moments of kindness. Many residents look forward to seeing familiar volunteer faces each week, and the sense of community that grows from these interactions is deeply meaningful. By giving just a little of your time on Sunday mornings, you can help bring joy, comfort, and connection to those who need it most.

We are looking for individuals who:

Approach interactions with kindness and understanding. Are committed to your scheduled shifts.

Time Commitment:

Regular weekly shifts available:Sundays: 10:00 AM - 11:30 AMOccasional opportunities to support special holiday services such as Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Reach out today for more information about Lyngblomsten's volunteer program! New volunteers will attend an orientation and complete a state-required background study with fingerprinting. There is no cost to you for this.

Volunteer: Cottage Grove Area In-Home Respite

FamilyMeans is looking for volunteers willing to provide in-home respite to families. In-home respite consists of going into caregivers’ homes weekly and providing nonmedical care to care receivers. This can consist of playing games, having conversations, doing other activities or just being there with the care receiver. Volunteers are asked to volunteer 3 hours a week. These times are flexible and can be done at whatever time works best for you and the family you are matched with. This can be done individually, as a family project, or as a small group.

Is this opportunity right for me…

Current FamilyMeans in-home respite differ greatly in their personalities and why they chose this option. Here are some of the reasons why volunteers chose this option and continue volunteering.

o   They appreciated flexible hours. There is no set time so volunteers can volunteer at times that fit their schedule.

o   Some volunteers enjoy being one on one with people rather than being in a group setting.

o   Some volunteers really like the social aspect of this opportunity. Since we carefully match volunteers and clients based on personalities and interests, to them it feels like spending 3 hours with a friend.

o   Some volunteers like the gratification that comes with this opportunity. Volunteers get to see how the work they do benefits the caregiver.

Volunteer: Fundraising Events for Crystal Parks!

Friends of Crystal Parks is a 501(c)3 non-profit organization that works to make the City of Crystal an even better place to raise a family or grow a business.  Funds raised through Friends of Crystal Parks events improve the City of Crystal's parks; and is fun to be a part of.  Plus, more volunteers makes for better events - and better parks!  One of their annual contributions is to purchase trees to hand out at the city's annual Arbor Day Event on the first Wednesday in May.  Other donations to projects are also made.

Friends of Crystal Parks currently hosts various events each year; including a plant sale the Saturday prior to Memorial Day weekend.  Additional fundraising ideas are being sought.  The group also provides information on ways to support Crystal's parks at the annual Crystal Frolics Family Festival on the last Saturday of July.  The Friends of Crystal Parks Board meets monthly September through May at the Crystal Community Center - all are welcome!  To learn more about this group, please visit:  www.friendsofcrystalparks.org.

Volunteer: FamilyWise On-Call Volunteer

There is no doubt the world has changed since 2020, but something that has increased is volunteerism. Since COVID, FamilyWise no longer has the constant volunteer opportunities we used to. In response to having opportunities but not having the people to help, we want to start a FamilyWise Volunteer on-call directory. Essentially, when we have an opportunity, whether it be something one person can do for an hour or a group can do for a day, I will send it out to the directory and see if anyone is available. FamilyWise will also be restarting the Volunteer Newsletter this summer where opportunities will also be shared.

Here is the link to become an on-call volunteer for FamilyWise Services:
