Volunteer: Delivering beds to kidsDescription
We welcome individuals, families, work teams, youth groups, and others to help us deliver beds and dream-kits to kids in our community. Deliveries are Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 9:00 am - 12:30pm. What our volunteers do: First, you'll help My Very Own Bed staff assemble Dream Kits (sheets, blanket, pillow, book, & stuffed animal) to go with each bed. Then you'll follow our delivery van in your own vehicle, and help deliver beds to 4-6 families' homes around the Twin Cities. At each home, we'll carry mattresses, frames and Dream Kits from the truck to the home. This is a wonderful opportunity for families with kids- we have the kids assemble the Dream Kits and then they're put in charge in carrying the Dream Kits into the families' homes. Families' are given the option of having us set up the beds. This is a great way for volunteers to interact with parents and children! Accessibility: Volunteers who cannot/don't want to lift 50+ pounds are invited to carry Dream Kits rather than mattresses/bedframes. Volunteers must have their own vehicle to participate in deliveries, but you will not need to put any beds or supplies in your car. We prioritize the safety of the families that we serve and require a face mask when we go into families' homes. You can schedule a volunteer date here! Please contact info@myveryownbed.org if you have any other questions. Nonprofit: My Very Own Bed Description

Volunteer: Sewing Teachers & Teachers' AidesDo you like to sew? Do you like talking about sewing and helping other people learn to sew? Do you want to do something concrete to support & build connection with African communities in the Twin Cities? Then you've gotta come hang out with us. Under One Roof Fiber Arts provides free sewing classes to African immigrants in the Twin Cities. All of our classes are volunteer-run, and we are always looking for more people who want to share their sewing skills while hanging out with a bunch of cool women. Okay but what does that actually mean? We're looking for both Teachers & Teacher's Aides. We need both people who are comfortable leading a class and people who'd rather assist and help answer student questions. Scheduling is as flexible as you need it to be. We've got ongoing classes as well as one-time classes, so you can help out every Weds morning or you can teach a class once a month. We appreciate whatever time you're willing to donate. We just want to make it easy for you to come in and share your knowledge. All of our students are African immigrants and most speak English as a second (or third or fourth) language. Some are new arrivals who are still learning the basics. It's okay if you don't have a ton of experience working with ESL students, but you do need to be open to working with people who are different from you and maybe learning new & better ways to communicate across language barriers. Unless you're also an African immigrant, then it probably won't be anything new (and you can totally both be a volunteer and also take a class if there's something that's a new skill for you).Really we're just trying to have fun and sew together, so if you've gotten this far, just send a message and let's figure out a way for you to get involved.Nonprofit: Under One Roof Fiber Arts (project of Sub-Saharan Youth & Family Services) Do you like to sew? Volunteer: Be BOLD! Be a mentor! (Age 21+)
Bolder Options mentors build meaningful, one-to-one relationships with diverse young people ages 10–14 by showing up consistently, listening, and offering encouragement. At a time when many youth are navigating stress, uncertainty, and big transitions, mentors provide something powerful: a reliable, positive adult presence. You don’t need to have all the answers — just a willingness to care and grow alongside a young person. What Mentoring Looks Like (Year One) Our first-year mentoring program is relationship-based, with a strong foundation in physical wellness and goal setting. As a mentor, you will: Spend 2–4 hours per week with your mentee for one year Engage in accessible physical activities together (walking, biking, gym time, sports, movement of all kinds) Support your mentee in setting and working toward personal goals Build trust through consistency, encouragement, and shared experiences Activities are flexible and tailored to your mentee’s interests and abilities — you do not need to be an athlete or expert. What Makes a Great Mentor The most impactful mentors are: Reliable and consistent Good listeners who are curious and open-minded Willing to try new things and meet youth where they are Positive role models who believe in young people’s potential Mentors come from all walks of life. What matters most is your commitment to showing up with care and respect. A Long-Term Commitment to Youth Bolder Options is committed to walking alongside young people beyond the first year. After completing the initial mentoring program, youth are invited into our alumni program, which offers: Continued connection to caring adults Group activities and leadership opportunities Support with career exploration, post-secondary planning, and life skills Our goal is to stay connected with youth through high school and into career and/or college pathways. What You Can Expect From Us Mentoring is free to you. Mentors are fully supported through: A dedicated support staff member Training and ongoing check-ins Weekly activity ideas planned by staff Free or low-cost tickets to local activities YMCA membership for you and your mentee
To ensure safe, consistent relationships, mentors must: 1) Be 21 years or older. 2) Have reliable access to a car. 3) Commit to meeting weekly for one year. 4) Complete an application, interview, background check, and orientation. Mentoring requires regular in-person connection. Long travel distances can make it difficult to sustain weekly meetings, so we prioritize mentors who live close to our service areas (within 20 min drive).
