Volunteer: Evening Food Market Volunteer Opportunities

CES (Community Emergency Service) in Minneapolis has expanded our Food Market hours into more evenings to meet the growing need for food access-especially as federal funding cuts to SNAP and other vital programs leave more families struggling to make ends meet. These new shifts allow more working individuals and families to access the support they need, and we need your help to make it possible.

As an evening Food Market volunteer, you’ll help restock shelves, sort and organize donations, assist guests with shopping, and create a welcoming environment during these critical after-work hours. Your time ensures that more neighbors-especially those who can’t make it during the day-can put food on the table.

EVENING HOURS are TUESDAY, WEDNESDAY and THURSDAY from 4-6pm.

Shifts involve movement and some light lifting. You can self-schedule yourself once a week, once a month or whenever you have free time.

Contact Nicole Smalley nsmalley@cesmn.org to get started today

Volunteer: Knitting & Crochet Teachers & Teachers' Aides

Do you like to knit and/or crochet? (Are you some kind of magician who likes doing both?) Do you like showing other people how to knit/purl/[insert crochet terms here, I don't know how to crochet and I don't have anyone to teach me]? Do you want to help us expand our yarn-based class offerings? Because mostly we do sewing classes, but we're really meant to be a *fiber arts* program, and we just do not have enough fiber arts options for our students. Oh maybe I should have started with this--Under One Roof Fiber Arts is an outreach program of Sub-Saharan African Youth & Family Services, and we provide free sewing/knitting/etc classes to African immigrants in the Twin Cities. All of our classes are volunteer-run, and we are always looking for more people who want to share their sewing/knitting/crocheting/etc skills while hanging out with a bunch of cool women.

Okay but what does that actually mean?

We're looking for both Teachers & Teacher's Aides. We aim to have 2-3 volunteers assigned to each class, so we need both people who are comfortable leading a class and people who'd rather assist and help answer student questions. Scheduling is as flexible as you need it to be. We've got ongoing classes as well as one-time classes, so you can help out every Weds morning or you can teach a class once a month. We appreciate whatever time you're willing to donate. We just want to make it easy for you to come in and share your knowledge. All of our students are African immigrants and most speak English as a second (or third or fourth) language. Some are new arrivals who are still learning the basics.  It's okay if you don't have a ton of experience working with ESL students, but you do need to be open to working with people who are different from you and maybe learning new & better ways to communicate across language barriers. Unless you're also an African immigrant, then it probably won't be anything new (and you can totally both be a volunteer and also take a class if there's something that's a new skill for you).Really we're just trying to have fun and make things together, so if you've gotten this far, just send a message and let's figure out a way for you to get involved.

Volunteer: Fight Hunger with Sanneh: Nutritional Services Volunteer

Nutritional Services

The Sanneh Foundation was founded as a youth sports organization in 2003 by former World Cup soccer player and native Minnesotan, Tony Sanneh. The Sanneh Foundation has broadened its reach and now provides a broad swath of services to address the social determinants of health across Minnesota. Our goal is to eliminate Minnesota’s steep racial and ethnic disparities in health outcomes, education, and income.

The Sanneh Foundation leads by listening to community members and providing services that are culturally responsive, empowering, and designed to improve lives. In an increasingly diverse state, Sanneh is at the forefront of meeting the needs of underserved communities so that every Minnesotan can grow up with the education, health care, home life, and strong community support they need to thrive.

Our Nutritional Services team works together to improve the lives of community members experiencing hunger by safely and efficiently distributing donated products from food rescue partners to hundreds of households each week across the Twin Cities.

With the support of generous volunteers, our program also empowers youth through on-the-job training and coordinates free food distributions Monday through Friday — rain or shine!
