Connect with youth in your community! PPL is looking for an energetic volunteer with an interest in working with diverse communities to support youth programs at PPL. This volunteer opportunity is great for someone who enjoys working with youth and encouraging exploration!

More information:
PPL Youth Enrichment Series are programs available to youth living in PPL housing communities.  Enrichment Series run for 3-6 weeks at a time throughout the year, however we ask that volunteers commit to a longer timeframe, if possible, able to allow for consistency and relationship building with the community and youth.

Each Enrichment Series will target different age groups (5-18 years old) and center around topics based on
youth interest such as: art, science, music, cooking, social justice, community service, etc. Activities will happen at the housing location and at off-site site locations. 

What you will be doing: 
Support youth participating in PPL youth programs by providing a positive, supportive, and engaging environment for youth to learn, grow, and explore. Engage youth in a variety of activities prepared by PPL staff or program partners.  Celebrate accomplishments and successes; redirect youth as needed.
Build relationships with youth and facilitate connections across youth. Assist staff in creating a safe,
productive, and supportive environment for all youth.

Young Authors Conference (YAC) gives 4th-8th grade students the opportunity to learn from professionals with real writing experience. Students attend a keynote address and three interactive writing sessions led by local fiction and non-fiction writers. Students leave YAC with a greater passion to write and a new set of strategies and ideas with which to experiment.

Help us build a biodiverse and resilient urban tree canopy! Volunteers will plant large-stock trees into pre-dug holes; this work will include loosening root balls, filling holes with soil, watering, and spreading mulch around newly planted trees. They will cool and clean the air, provide shade, and beautify the community. 

This event is part of the Cooling Minnesota Communities program – an initiative working to mitigate extreme heat, deepen climate resiliency, and increase access to urban tree canopies.

Join Great River Greening at Bend in the River Regional Park for a lovely Fall seeding. Volunteers will seed into an area of the park that had gone through a controlled burn. These seeds will pop up the following spring!

Volunteers joined us at this park last year for a buckthorn removal and this year, volunteers are able to spread native seeds in to those areas in this second phase of the project to restore the park's native plant communities.

Terrain will be flat prairie with fairly easy access to work areas. 

This is a family-friendly event. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to attend. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary, we will provide training required.

We act as an interdisciplinary team and offer patients and families comfort, honesty, and respect for their decisions. We serve the metro twin cities and surrounding areas and meet patients where ever they call home. Grace Hospice proudly serves Veterans and acknowledges and honors the special needs and connections our Veteran patients seek at the end of their journey. We are seeking Veterans to provide 1:1 companionship to our patients. Grace Hospice is actively recruiting new volunteers – humans and pets! Obedient and socialized pets make excellent companions for our patients and tend to bring lots of smiles and joy to everyone. As always, we seek openhearted adult volunteers (with or without pets!) to provide companionship and comfort to our patients and families. We are looking for individuals, groups and organizations to fund & build specialized packs of select hygiene items to easily share with struggling neighbors. These items will be provided to school social workers, nurses, food shelves and more to distribute with dignity to the students, individuals and families they serve.

Specifically, we need the following:

MSS is looking for an upbeat, fun and outgoing volunteer to come run a BINGO group or play board games with adults with disabilities at their day program! Looking for a volunteer to come in once a week for 1-2 hours to play games and offer fun and companionship to adults with disabilities at any of our 6 Twin Cities locations: Apple Valley, Eagan, St Paul, Shoreview, Brooklyn Park, and Oakdale. Raisers host (aka foster) puppies and dogs in their homes while they are growing up and getting trained in.

Hosting can be as short as one week, as long as two years, and anything in between! With our program, it is your choice how long you agree to host a dog in your home.

Support Seniors in Their Homes—Volunteer with Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors!

At Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors, our mission is to empower individuals aged 60 and older to live healthy, independent, and socially connected lives. Part of this mission involves ensuring that seniors can continue living in safe, clean homes.

Would you consider giving just 1-2 days a month to help an older adult with everyday household tasks? This could involve taking out the trash, doing laundry, changing bed sheets, light dusting, or vacuuming. If you're able, you could also assist with heavier lifting or simple home repairs.

Your support would mean the world to someone who no longer has the strength or mobility to manage these tasks alone. We offer flexible scheduling, a welcoming and grateful community, and the opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of isolated seniors.

Many older adults who no longer drive face challenges getting to medical appointments or running essential errands like grocery shopping. We seek individuals who enjoy driving and, more importantly, helping others stay connected and independent.

Our mission at Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors is to empower seniors to live healthy, independent, and socially engaged lives. Reliable transportation for medical appointments and grocery shopping is vital to making this possible.

As a Volunteer Driver, you will help seniors by providing rides to medical appointments and assisting with grocery pickup and delivery. Most trips are within 15miles.

If you're 19 or older, have a good driving record, and own a safe, well-maintained vehicle, we encourage you to join us in supporting our local seniors. A background check and orientation will be provided for all new volunteers.

Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors (LSHS) and Minnehaha Food Shelf (located in the Minnehaha United Methodist Church, 3701 E. 31st St) joined forces back in August of 2020 with concern for older adults in the community who were unable to pick up their food shelf items in person due to the COVID pandemic.

LSHS continues to provide this food shelf delivery service to older adults in the greater Longfellow neighborhoods, and we are looking for  volunteers who can assist with this program on at least one Tuesday a month.

Volunteers will be asked to work alongside LSHS and Minnehaha Food Shelf staff to choose and pack needed items to be delivered.  The number of clients varies,  but there are no more than 2 delivery stops. This opportunity can be physically demanding, and there is some heavy lifting involved. However, we work as a team to lighten the load.

We are looking for volunteers who can commit to at least one Tuesday morning a month for 1.5 -2.0 hours.

Volunteers will be experienced students or professionals able to committ 4-6 hours to capture and edit a story.  Projects are in the Twin Cities. 

Videos could be of key events (ours are COOL!) or of interviews with our recipients.  

Our volunteers welcome guests and provide information about the experience. Volunteers are stationed at a table and greet guests looking for relief at overwhelming events.

Helping Paws is a volunteer-based organization that trains service dogs for individuals with physical disabilities, veterans and first responders with service-related PTSD, and a variety of community-based facilities. We do not have a kennel facility, but rather have host homes who volunteer to take an 8 week old puppy to love during its 2.5 years of training before final placement. We take care of the positive reinforcement training, help with vet bills, grooming, and more.

We are always looking for host homes for our Golden and Labrador Retrievers. Families, 55+, and those with pets are encouraged to apply!

Volunteer as a Sunshine Caller!

Volunteer with Family Pathways to connect with neighbors in your community and make an immediate impact by engaging in a wonderful act of kindness!

Our volunteers offer “sunshine calls” to isolated older persons to ensure continued well-being of the individual and social contact. You’ll be trained in empathy and communication and provide phone calls over four weeks to program participants. You’ll find moments to laugh – these are simply conversations that should feel natural, with no profanity, and no inappropriate, religious or political topics.

By volunteering with FAMILY PATHWAYS as a Sunshine Caller, your time will make an important impact by:

  o  Providing a source of meaningful connection for both the older adults and the Sunshine Caller
  o  Working with each participant to better understand their individual needs
  o  Customizing the number of calls made per week, typically between 2 and 4. During these calls, the Sunshine Caller lets the client guide the conversation with topics (like gardening or new recipes, that they want to talk about).
  o  Providing the option to continue receiving one check-in call per week after four weeks.
  o  Volunteering as a Family Pathways i Sunshine Caller includes making notes after each call to be included in a monthly report you’ll make about the calls made. You’ll share information about the wellbeing and concerns of the person receiving the call and will report any immediate concerns as soon as possible.

Merrick Community Service seeks Food Shelf Volunteers

We are seeking individuals or small groups that can help out in our Food Shelf. Shifts are available Mondays 3pm 5pm, Tuesdays and Wednesdays 10 am-12 pm. Stock shelves as needed. Unload and organize boxed and packaged food. Some lifting up to 20 pounds may be necessary but not required to volunteer. Additional shifts may be available. Meals on Wheels Drivers Needed!

The Merrick Meals on Wheels program is dedicated to providing services that enable area seniors to remain independent and to continue living in their own homes for as long as possible. Meals are delivered by volunteers Monday through Thursday between 10:45am – 12:30pm.

Arrive at Merrick Community Services anywhere from 10:45 am-12:30pm. Pick up the meals and route sheet, review for accuracy. Go to every address on the route and deliver the client the meal, routes usually take about an hour. 

Delivering meals is a simple and rewarding way to help seniors and people with disabilities in need of hot meals and a daily visit from a friendly face, and you can do it over lunch! All you need to do is sign up, and you’ll be connected with your neighborhood Meals on Wheels program to get started.

When you volunteer for Meals on Wheels during your lunch hour, you’re doing your part to guarantee meals are delivered to the more than 4,000 people in need across the Minneapolis/St. Paul metro area. You can volunteer to deliver meals once a week, once a month, with a friend, with a group or on your own – whatever works best for you!

Delivering meals is also a great social activity – you can do it with a friend or a group and you’ll get to know your neighbors who also deliver. And you’ll leave knowing the eight to 10 people on your route received the nourishment and personal connection they need.

Wish granters are essential to fulfilling each child’s wish. They work in teams of two or three and help the wish child determine their heartfelt wish. Wish granters create an exceptional wish experience through building a relationship with the child and their family. Wish children come from all different backgrounds and cultures, so with the help of bilingual wish granters, a wish child can communicate in a language that they are most comfortable with during the wish process! It also greatly reduces the stress for other family members. We welcome all applicants, but have a particular need for volunteers who can speak Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Oromo, and Arabic at any level of proficiency. ASL is also in demand. Training is provided and is flexible with your schedule.

Help homeowners who are seniors, veterans, or who have disabilities with small repair jobs on the outside of homes anywhere in the 7 county metro area. Any specialty welcome from painting to roofing to windows to woodwork to concrete to just knowing how to use a drill and a hammer. You chose the project from our list, we provide the materials to complete the job. 

Hearts & Hammers provides volunteer opportunities for teams, groups, corporations and churches. Depending on the home and the work required, gather 10-50 volunteers for one day to paint, provide minor repairs, and yard renewal. Volunteers leave the site at the end of the day with a sense of accomplishment, pride and a feeling that they helped someone in the community. In addition, the team builds comradery and strengthens relationships within the group. Homes can be anywhere in the 7 county metro area. Program days can be chosen by the team anytime between June 1 and October 1.

Types of work that may be required:

The Open Door provides families opportunities to grow their own food through our Garden to Table program. With 7 community gardens around Dakota County, we support families that want to grow their own food. 

Volunteers for the Garden to Table program support the upkeep of the gardens by composting, mulching, and weeding. Volunteers with carpentry skills are also helpful to repair fencing or fixing raised beds. 

We have several shift options in the mornings beginning at 8:00 am until 11:30 am, April through October.  We also provide additional flexibility for ongoing volunteers.

Through its collective programs, The Open Door serves more than 20,000 Dakota County residents each month, and distributes over 5 million pounds of food annually-70% of which is fresh and/or perishable. Clients are able to access healthy food choices through a fixed-site food pantry in Eagan, multiple Mobile Pantry sites, the Mobile Lunch Box, and the Garden To Table program.

Position Summary:

Warehouse Assistants ensure dry goods and perishable items in the pantry are well stocked. They will also help pull items for offsite distributions, accept and sort incoming donations, and assist with the general upkeep of the warehouse area.

Primary Duties and Essential Responsibilities:

• Ensure store is well stocked with perishable and nonperishable foods prior to the start of client appointments .

• Accept and sort incoming donations.

• During store hours, pull dry goods from the warehouse for Pantry Assistants to stock shelves

• Ensure warehouse is clean and organized.

• Restock refrigerated perishable items during store hours

• Unload dry good pallets

• Accept and repackage incoming Garden to Table produce

• Mop and sweep floors 15 minutes prior to store open

Skills and Qualifications:

• Must be 16+ years of age unless accompanied by an adult

• Ability to stand on feet for up to 3 hours

• Must be ok working in varying temperatures since this role will require working inside a walk-in cooler

• Strong desire to eradicate hunger in Dakota County

• Must be able to lift 20+ pounds

• Closed-toed shoes required

Commitment:

Volunteer shifts are 2.5 hours long. Weekday morning, afternoon and evening opportunities are available

Interested in helping feed kids this summer? Volunteer with the Mobile Lunch Box program!

Last year The Open Door gave out over 58,000 meals to children and need your help this summer to do it again! We will be serving students living in Burnsville, Lakeville, Apple Valley, Rosemount, Inver Grove Heights, South Saint Paul and West Saint Paul!

Volunteer opportunities include driving and/or riding in The Open Door van and handing out food in neighborhoods. We have multiple volunteer shifts to fill in this summer.

The Mobile Lunch Box is a one-of-a-kind approach to addressing children’s hunger in the summertime when children are not in school accessing free and reduced meal programs. The Mobile Lunch Box brings free healthy lunches to 31 neighborhoods across Dakota County.

This role saves thousands of pounds of food from being sent to a landfill each day! After food is sorted, this volunteer will ensure it is properly staged until it’s ready to be stocked in the store or loaded for an offsite distribution.

Position Summary

Food Sorters are responsible for unloading the truck and sorting food donations from our food rescue grocery retail stores. These volunteers will also load the mobile pantry vehicles for our offsite distributions.

• Must be 18+ years of age.

• Strong desire to eradicate hunger in Dakota County

• Valid Minnesota driver’s license and complete a driver's background check

Training and Support

Food Rescue Drivers will be properly trained prior to their first route. Volunteers will be paired with an experienced volunteer who will help guide them through their first shift.

Union Gospel Mission Twin Cities (UGMTC) is participating in the 3,000 Acts of Kindness event at the Minneapolis Convention Center. It will be a powerful day of hope and practical help for people experiencing hunger and homelessness.

You can make a difference by assembling Snack Packs: Ziploc bags filled with easy-to-eat, shelf-stable snacks. These packs will be handed out to men, women and children experiencing hunger and homelessness at the event.

This is not an event hosted by UGMTC nor are the items provided by UGMTC. UGMTC would be glad to send a staff member to a packing event to talk about who the snack packs are going to, the nature of homelessness in the Twin Cities, and how UGMTC is addressing homelessness in our community.

- At Bridging (Bloomington or Roseville). A 10 dresser minimum is required.
- Offsite at a location of YOUR choice. A 50 dresser minimum is required for an offsite build. An additional $500 surcharge is applied to cover logistics, handling (shipping and pickup), and staffing.

- Dresser build projects are available year round
- Builds are typically 1pm-6pm on weekdays (occasional Saturday) and dependent on number of dresser sponsored (typically 2-3 hours)

Organize a Group Volunteer Event at Bridging!

Looking for a great volunteer project for your group of friends or coworkers? Volunteering as a group in a Bridging warehouse will make a huge difference to families pursuing housing stability. 

Group size: 5-25 volunteers

Shifts: 2-3 hours in length

Weekdays: Tuesdays-Thursdays any time after 1pm. (1-4pm, 2-5pm or 4-6pm) 

We require all volunteers to be 14 years of age or older in our warehouses.

TYPICAL PROJECTS INCLUDE: Sorting through donated goods, loading and unloading trucks, general warehouse organization, rolling linens, and/or stocking shelves for client shopping. Specific projects will be determined on the day you arrive based on the inventory, our needs that day, and the final size of your group.

WHEN CAN I BOOK A GROUP PROJECT? Book year-round. Pick a date, time and location (Bloomington or Roseville) for your event. All groups must be scheduled in advance.

By hosting an Essentials Drive at your workplace, faith-based organization, or in your community, you can help provide essential items to households in need while raising awareness. Bridging serves an average of 120 households each week.

Organize a drive today! Help us stock the shelves so we can serve over 300 people (120 households) every week. Essential Drives allow us to fill the gaps in donations and make sure families have what they need to fully function in their new home.

Blankets: All sizes (twin, full, queen, and king) wanted. We need blankets for over 300 people each week!

Towels: All sizes and types wanted. Our goal is to provide one bath towel per person. That's over 13,000 towels each year!

Kitchen Packs: Include a can opener, mixing spoon, spatula, utility scissors, pizza cutter, and a container to hold items. We need over 120 packs per week to give each home a pack.

Cleaning Kits: Include dish scrubber, rubber gloves, sponges, hard surface scrub brush, dust cloths, and a container to hold items (bucket or shoebox size bin). (No cleansers/chemicals please). We need over 120 packs per week to give each home a kit.

Sponsor & build dressers for those in need with a terrific and fun team building activity!

1. Determine your build location:
- At Bridging (Bloomington or Roseville). A 10 dresser minimum is required.
- Offsite at a location of YOUR choice. A 50 dresser minimum is required for an offsite build. An additional $500 surcharge is applied to cover logistics, handling (shipping and pickup), and staffing.

2. Determine date and time:
- Dresser build projects are available year round
- Builds are typically 1pm-6pm on weekdays (occasional Saturday) and dependent on number of dresser sponsored (typically 2-3 hours)
-Other options may be available so contact us to find a fit!

3. Determine group size:
- Teams range in size from 10-300+ people
- Usually, one team of 2-4 people works at each 8ft table
-All necessary tools and instructions are provided

4. Determine the number of dressers to sponsor and build
- Once you determine the date, time and your group size, we can discuss the ideal number of dressers to sponsor to keep everyone busy (usually about 1+ dresser per participant)

Organize a Group Volunteer Event at Bridging!

Looking for a great volunteer project for your group of friends or coworkers? Volunteering as a group in a Bridging warehouse will make a huge difference to families pursuing housing stability. 

Group size: 5-25 volunteers

Shifts: 2-3 hours in length

Weekdays: Tuesdays-Thursdays any time after 1pm. (1-4pm, 2-5pm or 4-6pm) 

We require all volunteers to be 14 years of age or older in our warehouses.

TYPICAL PROJECTS INCLUDE: Sorting through donated goods, loading and unloading trucks, general warehouse organization, rolling linens, and/or stocking shelves for client shopping. Specific projects will be determined on the day you arrive based on the inventory, our needs that day, and the final size of your group.

WHEN CAN I BOOK A GROUP PROJECT? Book year-round. Pick a date, time and location (Bloomington or Roseville) for your event. All groups must be scheduled in advance.

OFFSITE OPPORTUNITY!!! Help Bridging Stock the Shelves! Imagine how you could cook a meal without basic kitchen utensils or sleep without a pillow or blanket?

Thousands of local families and individuals face this situation every day.

By hosting an Essentials Drive at your workplace, faith-based organization, or in your community, you can help provide essential items to households in need while raising awareness. Bridging serves an average of 120 households each week.

Location: Off-site at your work, school, faith-based organization, and in your community.

Organize a drive today! Help us stock the shelves so we can serve over 300 people (120 households) every week. Essential Drives allow us to fill the gaps in donations and make sure families have what they need to fully function in their new home.

Types of Essentials Drives:

Blankets: All sizes (twin, full, queen, and king) wanted. We need blankets for over 300 people each week!

Towels: All sizes and types wanted. Our goal is to provide one bath towel per person. That's over 13,000 towels each year!

Kitchen Packs: Include a can opener, mixing spoon, spatula, utility scissors, pizza cutter, and a container to hold items. We need over 120 packs per week to give each home a pack.

Cleaning Kits: Include dish scrubber, rubber gloves, sponges, hard surface scrub brush, dust cloths, and a container to hold items (bucket or shoebox size bin). (No cleansers/chemicals please). We need over 120 packs per week to give each home a kit.

Helping help more caregivers get a break from caregiving!

DARTS Breathing Space group respite provides supervision and companionship with the addition of social engagement and 4 hours of brain-stimulating activities. Led by a DARTS staff member with support from a team of volunteers, the program is designed for individuals with early- to mid- stage memory loss or other conditions that require some supervision. A session of DARTS Breathing Space includes music, games, exercise, discussion groups, art activities, guest speakers, and more.

DARTS is offering this group respite opportunity at Augustana Lutheran Church (1400 S Robert St, West St Paul) on Thursdays, from 10am-2pm, at Easter Lutheran Church (4545 Pilot Knob Rd, Eagan) on Fridays, from 10am – 2pm. We are adding a NEW DARTS Breathing Space location this September at Grace Lutheran Church (7800 150th St W, Apple Valley), the 2nd and 4th Mondays monthly, from 10am-2pm.

The Gathering, Lyngblomsten's award-winning program, is seeking compassionate volunteers to join our team. Provide essential respite for caregivers, allowing them much-needed time to recharge, while you assist participants in engaging in enjoyable, staff-led activities that promote brain stimulation, including stimulating conversations, joyful musical moments, creative crafts, and heartwarming stories.

The Gathering runs Monday through Thursday from 9:30am to 2:15pm at our two locations: St. Paul (Como Neighborhood) and Lino Lakes. Our caring and experienced staff will provide you with thorough training. Tamarisk, a non profit volunteer organization, attends to the non medical needs of people and their families faced with the end stages of a life-threatening illness. Tamarisk volunteers provide regularly scheduled breaks for caregivers within the family.For approximately 2-4 hours a week Tamarisk volunteers assure the safety and well being of the patient while the family caregiver is occupied or away.  During home visits, Tamarisk volunteers play cards or games, share a movie together, read a book, listen and provide a presence to their companion.  They might prepare a light meal, run errands or bring their companion to a medical appointment.  The companions day to day needs form the agenda of the visit.  

The ACTS Training program is a long-term residential program at UGMTC's Men's campus for men working on life skills to transition out of homelessness. A strong component of homelessness is the lack of healthy connections with others. Help develop community and relationships through events on Thursdays for the ACTS training program residents. Being an Art Lead Volunteer is an opportunity to connect with program residents,
tangibly showing them that they are loved by Jesus and his people. As a part of the Art
Lead Volunteer position, you have the opportunity to form that connection through art.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
• Prepare and lead an art project for the program’s residents. This may be a class
or an individual. The art can be any medium (drawing, clay, painting, etc.).

• Reliable transportation to meeting locations
• Ability to meet consistently with the residents on a scheduled basis in
partnership with program staff

WORKING CONDITIONS & PHYSICAL EFFORT:
• This role is a mix of sitting and standing in a homeless shelter setting.

TRAINING:
• Meeting and tour with Program Manager
• Onboarding orientation training required
• Additional training opportunities may be available

COMMITMENT:
• 6 Month commitment
• Biweekly sessions
• Saturdays 10 am - 11 am or 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm

Would you like to make a difference in the lives of seniors with limited mobility?

Help residents who use wheelchairs attend in-house activities or appointments. Accompany them as they go to the Beauty Shop, doctor appointments, physical therapy, concerts, or church services. No driving is required for this activity; all activities occur within our Care Center.

This is an incredibly rewarding volunteer role. You will make new friends, stay active, and help older adults stay engaged and connected.
