 Assignments: 
Volunteers will be assigned to packing boxes of dry food, bagging produce, receiving and stocking donations and purchased food deliveries.  NorthPoint staff will have direct contact with guests (not volunteers) to register and receive food. When you arrive for your shift, please use the entry door of the Food Shelf, enter, to record your time sign in, check in with designated supervisor and wash your hands in the breakroom or hand washing sink.  Please remember to sign out at the end of your shift.  Our Food Shelf Supervisor will provide you with training at your first shift as well.

Please take all necessary precautions if you are health compromised or caring for someone with compromised health.  Please do not volunteer if you or anyone in your household has tested positive for COVID-19.

Required face coverings:  

All staff and volunteers are encouraged to wear face coverings that cover both mouth and nose and are secure with ear loops.  NorthPoint will provide disposable masks and gloves during yours shift.  
 

How to Dress and What to Bring: 
Please wear closed-toe shoes to protect your feet from boxes and pallets.  No sandals please.  Please dress modestly with shorts that come to the knee or long pants and short or long sleeves.  There will be bottled drinking water on site but you are also encouraged to bring your own reusable water bottle.  Hand sanitizer and disposable masks will be available throughout the building.

A little bit about our downtown shelter: FCC is a shelter operated by Agate Housing and Services in the basement of First Covenant Church. Located in downtown Minneapolis, this shelter works to assist the homeless community of Hennepin County. FCC is unique because it is the only shelter for couples in the entire state of Minnesota.

Our couples' shelter is located in the basement of the First Covenant Church Building in downtown Minneapolis. A QR code (required to get through the parking lot gate) will be sent to you ahead of time so that you can park in the lot.

We have a big need for ongoing Food Rescue Drivers! Using PRISM’s vehicle, the Driver drives to specific retail stores in the west metropolitan area to pick up donated food. This role is critical in assuring our participants receive high-quality food when visiting our Marketplace Food Shelf, and that food being discarded by local supermarket chains is distributed to our households. PRISM is excited to offer a new volunteer opportunity! The Food Shelf Check-in volunteer is the first point of contact for those visiting the food shelf. This volunteer schedules walk-in appointments for our visitors, helps identify participants' specific needs, and works in tandem with our staff to facilitate traffic flow in our facility. Primary responsibilities include the following:

- Greet participants, volunteers, and visitors in a warm, friendly and welcoming manner
- Directly serve participants with check-in at the Marketplace Food Shelf
- Work in tandem with Case Manager to discern participant needs, incl. intake for first-time visitors, clothing vouchers, resources or other services.
- Stay informed of changes to PRISM’s processes, services, and inventory in the Marketplace Food Shelf
- Manage/create appointment calendar using Google Calendar
- Maintain ongoing communications with staff via Microsoft Teams to address specific participant questions/concerns.
- Other duties as assigned

We would greatly benefit from volunteers who possess the following skillset:

- Effective interpersonal skills under all types of conditions, exhibiting a supportive, direct, and positive approach with participants, staff and other volunteers
- Ability to work with diverse populations with the demonstrated ability to communicate and relate effectively to a wide variety of individuals
- Ability to learn and acquire overall knowledge of PRISM, its services and staff, and other social service agencies
- Volunteers with experience in retail and/or direct customer service do particularly well here

Bilingual abilities are a huge plus in this role but not a requirement. We would greatly benefit from Russian, Spanish speaking volunteers in this role.

Pre-COVID, the Marketplace Food Shelf utilized a “choice” model, meaning the participants were free to shop just as they do in a traditional grocery store by choosing exactly the food they need from the shelves within Food Shelf guidelines. Our current service delivery system is to ensure the safety and comfort of staff, volunteers, and participants, while serving participants at a larger volume and more frequently. Volunteers working in the Marketplace Food Shelf will perform a variety of duties including:

- Accept donations from the public, offer and provide the donor with a receipt if requested.

- Serve our participants with check-in/out (currently put on hold because of our current model due to COVID-19)

- Review and sort food donations for packaging issues and expiration dates compared to PRISM guidelines

- Review and sort through perishable items to ensure they are of good quality for our participants

- Assemble and prepare nonperishable boxes, ranging from 35-40 lbs.

- Stock assembly-line shelves with purchased and donated products

- Break down unneeded packaging and expired food for trash, recycling, and compost. Disposing of items as needed.

- Maintain a clean, safe, and orderly work environment.

- Notify Marketplace Food Shelf staff, or a tenured volunteer, of any questions or any identified needs in the food shelf.

- Other duties as assigned

Basic Guidelines:
- Purchase ingredients and prepare at least 50 sandwiches (so that it stores well, please only add meat and cheese on the bread).
- Sides: Condiment packets, chips, and non-refrigerated fruit (examples: apples, bananas, or oranges).
- Estimated cost: $75–$100 for sandwiches only; double if adding sides.
 

Supply Checklist:
- Meat (no pork)  
- Cheese  
- Bread  
- Condiment packets  
- White stickers and marker for labeling sandwich type  
- Ziploc bags  
- Preferred Side(s): Chips and non-refrigerated fresh fruit (examples: apples, bananas, or oranges)
 

Assembly Instructions:
- Use 2 or more slices of meat and 1 or more slices of cheese per sandwich.  
- Place each in a Ziploc bag with a sticker noting sandwich type and prep date.  
- Suggested: Repack sandwiches into original bread bags for easy transport and storage. Label outer bag with sandwich type and date.

Bonus Touch:
Write short notes of encouragement—neutral in tone, not religious, signed by you or your group.  
Example: “Enjoy your lunch! From St. Mary’s Senior Youth Group”

Final Step:
Deliver sandwiches at your scheduled drop-off time - LUNCH DROP OFF SCHEDULE.  

Keep sandwiches cold using a clean cooler or cooler bag and ice packs if transporting on trips lasting more than 30 minutes. For shorter trips of 30 minutes or less in a cool car, a cooler isn’t required—just keep items chilled until departure and go straight to drop-off without making any unnecessary stops.

Wash hands and use clean surfaces while handling food.

Library Volunteers assist patrons with item check-out, computer use, scanning, printing, laminating, and most importantly being a resource. Volunteers are the heart of this lovely space. No prior library experience is necessary. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older and willing to work alone. The primary job of the Volunteer is to be a friendly face.  Because we work with children and vulnerable adults, Volunteers must pass a background check including fingerprinting. The reward of serving this beautiful community is worth the process.

Videographer volunteers help the RSR communications team by taking videos of adoptable RSR animals for promotional use and may also help by recording video at large-scale events. Previous work with animals is a plus but is not required. We are able to provide some lighting, stand, and background equipment - but not a camera. Time commitment is based on project commitments. This can happen at different locations,cations; our office in Princeton, events throughout the state, etc.

As a vetting transport lead, you will be responsible for attending animal transports (typically dogs) at the office in Princeton. At the transport, you will be responsible for ensuring that the animals coming into the rescue are examined, perform any needed services, and the proper documentation is recorded.  This may include vaccines, microchipping, heartworm tests, nail trims, deworming, application of flea/tick preventative, administering heartworm medication, or other treatments as indicated. Professional experience is required for this role.

You will also be responsible for answering any questions that the fosters may have regarding the animal's future vetting needs, meds or any vetting issues addressed during the intake process.  Also, describe how to administer medications, etc., at home if sending with the foster to administer.

Transport Drivers are individuals who help give rides to our foster animals. These rides are most often from the foster homes to the Ruff Start office in Princeton (or back) on surgery days, but can also be to partner vet clinics or to pick up a new intake or deliver an animal to a foster or adoptive home. These volunteers will use their own vehicle to transport animals in crates. When a request for a ride is submitted, our Transport Coordinators will send out an email to volunteers asking for someone to help with the ride. Once a volunteer steps up, the Transport Coordinator will send an email connecting the Transport Driver and the foster, who then coordinate a drop off/pick up time and location.

Ruff Start Rescue received many donations of animal supplies, even on a daily basis. The In-Kind Donation Recorder is responsible for accurately recording all in-kind donations into our tracking spreadsheet. This role ensures that every donation is documented for internal records, reporting, and donor acknowledgment. If you’re detail-oriented, comfortable with spreadsheets, and want to support animal rescue in a behind-the-scenes way, this is the role for you!

Office Transport Volunteers are responsible for helping the transport lead to ensure a smooth transport of dogs coming from TX. You are required to be at the transport you volunteer for to help set up, tear down, ensure dogs go through vetting/pictures, are fitted for collars/harnesses and welcome new fosters and FTAs. You are working together with other volunteers and leads to make sure all the dogs are handled appropriately. You are representing Ruff Start Rescue and we expect you will be approachable, professional and helpful.

The Intake Assistant is an administrative position responsible for supporting the intake team by replying to emails, returning voicemails, and assisting with other tasks the intake department may need help with. This role is designed to help with “traffic control” for the intake department (impound, owner surrender, reservation, stray, out of state, etc.). As people reach out to the rescue, you will assess the information and pass it along to the appropriate team within intake if needed. Most responses will include sharing resources and information using provided email templates to help guide people needing assistance with their animals.

Event volunteers are an important part of our events team! RSR has events nearly every week that rely on volunteers to make them successful. Responsibilities may include: talking to the public about RSR and answering questions about volunteer opportunities and fostering, setting up an information table with marketing materials, selling merchandise, and running our fundraising ‘prize wheel’ where guests make a donation to spin the wheel and win a prize.

We are looking for volunteers with passion for education to assist and/or lead education programs throughout the state. We are especially interested in expanding programming to the metro area. All materials will be provided for education programs - we have laptops to borrow, PowerPoint slides, activity kits (if needed), and handouts about our programs. Many of these programs are during the day to accommodate schools' schedules.

Cat Snugglers help provide companionship for the cats staying at the Ruff Start Rescue office in Princeton. Spending time with the office cats helps with socializing them and decreases their stress.  The number of cats at the office varies, often ranging from just a few to upwards of 10.

Food sorting plays a vital role in ensuring that families who visit Today’s Harvest receive healthy, safe, and high-quality food—all while helping reduce food waste in our community.

Food sorting is the process of organizing and preparing rescued food so it’s safe, fresh, and ready to share with our community. When food donations arrive—often from grocery stores, food rescue partners, or community drives—volunteers help sort through the items to check for quality and safety.

This includes:

Separating food into categories such as produce, bread, meat, dairy, and dry goods.

Removing items that are spoiled, damaged, or unsafe to distribute.

Organizing market-ready food so it can be stocked quickly and efficiently.

Composting, garbage or recycling items when appropriate.

Leaders of Today and Tomorrow (LOTT) is currently Communications Committee Members who are passionate about empowering women leaders.

LOTT’s mission is to ignite women to lead with confidence. We do this through a six-month fellowship that includes workshops, a mentor pairing, personal development plans, and a community-based project. All aspects of the fellowship are free to participants.

The American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is the leading nonprofit dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. With over 1,940 attendees and more than $190,000 raised to support suicide prevention, the Twin Cities Walk is one of the largest in the country - and it's all powered entirely by volunteers like you! 

About the Committee

As a new committee member, you'll work alongside experienced, veteran committee members who are local Minnesota residents that have attended and supported the Twin Cities Out of the Darkness Walk for years. Neighborhood Development Center (NDC) is a non-profit organization that offers training, lending, retail spaces and technical assistance to inner-city entrepreneurs in its targeted neighborhoods including, Saint Paul. Minneapolis and Brooklyn Park. NDC's mission is to improve neighborhood economies by developing the talents of micro-entrepreneurs within their own communities. NDC has trained more than 6,000 people to date (80% of whom are people of color.) We currently have nearly 700 alumni in business.

NDC is interested in finding volunteers to mentor some of our entrepreneurs who are in need of some guidance and encouragement. Mentors will connect with entrepreneurs for an agreed upon time period of up to one (1) year. Mentor and mentee will meet atleast once a month or more frequently if desired.

Mentors can choose to mentor 1-3 entrepreneurs based on capacity.

Come be inspired by what kids can accomplish as a judge or referee at a FIRST Tech Challenge or FIRST LEGO League tournament. We need both judges and referees to make these Robotics tournaments a success. This fall, students in grades 4 to 12 will form Robotics teams to participate in these FIRST programs.

In Minnesota, these talented kids will compete at an event organized by High Tech Kids. Join us to be inspired by these students. Following volunteer training in September - October, spend a full Saturday or Sunday of your choice in November through February judging or refereeing at a High Tech Kids Robotics Tournament. Kids will explain what they learned and built through these FIRST programs. Judges ask questions and provide encouragement to teams during judging sessions, then collaborate with other judges to determine award winners. Referees officiate robot performance matches, tabulate scores, and encourage teams in a fun, energy-filled environment.

Position Summary

The Retail Rescue Drivers help gather and load up donations then transport them back to IOCP. Due to the size of these donations often, drivers use IOCP vans and trucks for pick-ups. StyleXchange Store Volunteer

Purpose: The StyleXchange volunteer will assist clients through the checking out process in a warm, friendly, and welcoming manner.

Description of Role:

The role of StyleXchange Volunteer enhances our organization’s ability to directly impact our mission by providing low-barrier access for clients to receive high-quality clothing in an inclusive and welcoming thrift environment—all at no cost to them! As a StyleXchange store volunteer, upholding the dignity and integrity of our clients is at the forefront of every interaction.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

·        Welcome shoppers, answer questions, and assist, as necessary.

·        Follow customer service standards established by Valley Outreach to provide equitable, dignified, and respectful treatment for all shoppers.

·        Operate a register, using our simple tablet point of sale process. Follow cash handling and credit card processing procedures.

·        Assist with other related tasks, such as cleaning, restocking, merchandising, etc.

·        Be reliable and responsible.

Key Requirements and Expectations:

·        Interest(or experience)in providing high quality customer service.

·        Comfortable using computer applications, iPad, or other tablets. 

·        Friendly demeanor.

Description of Role:

As a clothing sorting volunteer, you will process donated items and prepare them for the store floor. Providing an inclusive and welcoming experience for all shoppers is our goal! You'll be making a real difference in the lives of people in need by providing low-barrier access for everyone to receive high-quality clothing for free or at a low cost in our thrift store. 

Volunteer Duties and responsibilities.

·        Understand and abide by quality standards set by Valley Outreach to ensure positive client experience. Consider quality and seasonality, understand what "usable condition" means, and center the dignity of shoppers.

·        Work independently and use decision-making skills to effectively sort, select, and evaluate donated goods in line with our quality standards, using "Keep - Pass - Shred " sorting process.

·        Follow established processes for organizing, tagging, and properly adding items into inventory to prepare them for the store floor.

·        Maintain area cleanliness and organization.

Purpose: The Food Shelf volunteer is responsible for providing clients with great customer service while creating a positive and welcoming environment in the Food Shelf.

The role of Food Shelf volunteer enhances our organization’s ability to destigmatize the food shelf shopping experience by providing great customer service to clients shopping in the food shelf. By demonstrating our organization’s values, volunteers will employ empathy and understanding as well as practicing non-judgement and inclusion to foster a welcoming environment. Volunteers in this position will receive initial training and ongoing support from food program staff and work alongside several fellow Food Shelf Volunteers.

In June, a devastating windstorm with winds over 120 mph tore through Bemidji. Nearly three months later, families are still facing massive cleanup—large debris piles, downed trees, and damaged properties.

We’re calling on volunteers from across the state to lend a hand with debris hauling, raking, and chainsaw work. Even a day or two of your time can make a huge difference in helping Bemidji recover. FamilyMeans is looking for volunteers to help with the afternoon snack we prepare for participants at Cimarron Kidspace. Each day when students get out of school we provide them with a snack.

 Volunteers would come in around 2pm/2:30pm and stay until 3:30/4:00pm.  Volunteers can serve as snack helpers 1-5 times/week, depending on their interest and schedule.

We do ask volunteers to make a regular schedule with volunteers letting staff know if they can’t make it on scheduled dates. 

Volunteers would need to do a background check. Volunteers will need to follow food safety guidelines but do not need to go through official food safety certification.  All supplies and ingredients are provided.

Do you like to build puzzles, sing and dance, play games, hang out with other people and do other fun activities? If so FamilyMeans Day Out Program might be a fit for you. Day Out is a program for caregivers to drop off their care receivers. Caregivers get a well-deserved break while care receivers get to participate in fun activities. This program happens on Fridays from 9:30 am to 1 pm. Volunteers help guide participants, which we call friends, through these activities in a 1:1 ratio. Volunteers can’t and therefore aren’t expected to help with the personal care of clients. While Day Out occurs every Friday volunteers can sign up month by month for Fridays that work for them. Some volunteers like to come as often as possible, and others sign up once a month or less.

Volunteers love this program because there is a real sense of community with the volunteers and the friends. They also enjoy helping friends through these activities and getting to know them. They also really enjoy the themes we have each day and some volunteers really like dressing up for those themes.

This fall, Cimarron Teens from FamilyMeans will be going to Feed My Starving Children to help pack meals. FamilyMeans is looking for volunteers to help provide supervision and sealing food packages for those trips. We will be requesting volunteers that have mobility and will be able to stand for a 90-minute session.  As of now, we are looking for morning shifts, afternoon shift, and night shifts. While helping at Feed My Starving Children is in the fall volunteers can continue to volunteer for our youth programs afterwards.

FamilyMeans is looking for volunteers to help with our new group respite program Community Connection in partnership with the YMCA of Forest Lake. This program is designed for people who are in the early stages of memory loss and will give them in fun activities designed just for them. Volunteers will assist in setting up, guiding participants through activities, and will help clean up at the end of the day. This program will run on Tuesdays from 12 pm to 4 pm with volunteers being asked to arrive early to set up and stay late to clean up. We can work with you if you are interested but can’t make every week or can’t be there the whole time.

FamilyMeans is looking for volunteers willing to provide in-home respite to families in the Forest Lake area. In-home respite consists of going into caregivers’ homes weekly and providing nonmedical care to care receivers. This can consist of playing games, having conversations, doing other activities or just being there with the care receiver. Volunteers are asked to volunteer 3 hours a week. These times are flexible and can be done at whatever time works best for you and the family you are matched with. This can be done individually, as a family project, or as a small group.

The St. Paul European Christmas Market (ECM) is entering its 12th year and gearing up for its most magical season yet—welcoming more than 250,000 visitors in 2025!

This is a great way to create a fun service project for your organization, business or community. Timing and goals are determined by you; however, needed products and criteria are listed below (note: you do not need to collect all but could focus on Oral or Body Care for instance). We will provide you with a toolkit on how to execute a successful drive.

All products can be dropped off at our warehouse or picked up by a Bridge to Basics' volunteer. These items are then added to the hygiene bank inventory and donated to local nonprofits serving hygiene insecure neighbors.

We are looking for businesses, community groups and neighbors to buy full size personal hygiene products and fill grocery bags with them for neighbors struggling to afford hygiene items. These bags will be given to food shelves, schools, housing providers and refugee services organizations.

Let's help address this need by making hygiene kits for struggling individuals and families.

Donations: While donations are not required to pack at this session, we humbly request them. Each volunteer packs about $50 worth of food and FMSC receives no government support. We can only send meals as we have funding. Nearly everyone is able to contribute something, but we leave the amount up to you. Many groups and individuals make advance fundraising a fun part of their service project. As you're willing and able, you may donate on the day you volunteer (by cash, check or credit card), or online before or after you pack.

AccentCare Fairview Hospice is seeking compassionate volunteers to help brighten the lives of our patients. Whether you are playing music for our patients, praying with them, providing aromatherapy, or visiting with a therapy dog, you can make a difference in the lives of hospice patients. While you are brightening our patients’ lives you might find that your life becomes brighter too!

Since 2022, Rock from the Heart volunteers have been raising funds by working concessions at Target Field. Now we’re excited to expand with a new Concert & Event Security Volunteer Fundraising Team in partnership with BEST Security.

Target Field volunteers complete online training annually prior to working a shift

*For Target Field shifts, volunteers can be 16 if accompanied by patient and work in a non-alcohol serving position.
*Event Security volunteers required to complete a one time in-person training (12 hours) prior to working a shift.

This volunteer in this role sends out the “Fosters Needed” email to the Safe Hands database of fosters and secures animal placements into Safe Hands foster homes. This role manage communications with fosters in the week leading up to intake and the week following intake. Complete Intake Spreadsheet with foster contact information, animal(s) they are taking and any needs they have (x-pen, foster sitter, etc). This is a shared job with team of foster coordinators. The time commitment is approximately 5-8 hours once every two months. Time will vary based on size of intake. The volunteer filling this role must have the ability to check email on a consistent basis during daytime hours on the weeks they're "on" and be available one week prior and one week after each assigned transport.

Order Building at Every Meal is a specialized role. 

We ask that Order Builder volunteers be able to commit to a minimum of two 2-3 hour shifts each month during the school year.  Volunteers must be trained prior to joining the volunteer Order Builder team.

What to Order Builders at Every Meal do?

Order Building Volunteers help prepare boxes of completed food bags for delivery to our partner schools and community sites across Minnesota. As an Order Builder, you’ll be putting boxes or totes of food bags weighing 25-30lbs each onto pallets or carts, preparing them for delivery by our drivers. This role involves:

Health and Safety

Closed-toed shoes are required for volunteering. You may bring a water bottle if desired but we do have water fountains available. Masks are currently not required but are encouraged if that is your preference as part of our continued efforts to follow CDC guidelines. We're looking for a Front Desk Volunteer for our Tuesday afternoon shift!

Minneapolis and Brooklyn Park. NDC's mission is to improve neighborhood economies by developing the talents of micro-entrepreneurs within their own communities. NDC has trained more than 6,000 people to date (80% of whom are people of color.) We currently have nearly 700 alumni in business.

The goal of NDC's Volunteer Impact Program (VIP) is to create opportunities for members to share their skills, expertise, knowledge and time with the organization as we continue to support our small businesses. Position Purpose:  

We are seeking an individual who is bilingual and open to cultural diversity to spend five-ten hours a month training business client in basic social media techniques. It will be your responsibility to teach the business(es) the basics of using social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc. Also, assist with the creation of photos and other content using social media programs like Canva.
