Volunteer: Share your America - Host an exchange student!

international Experience (iE), with US Department of State support, is planning to welcome exchange students to the US for the 2020-21 school year.  We continue to monitor recommendations from the CDC, WHO and Department of State, and will adjust our program as necessary, always acting with student and host family health in mind.  Reaching out for more info or even registering on our website does NOT obligate you to host if your family should reconsider later this summer.

So now that all of my disclaimers are out of the way... let's jump in to what we're looking for!

A volunteer host family fills the place of a parent during a student's exchange year/semester abroad.  We're looking for families/adults/empty nesters/single adults/parents with toddlers/parents with teens (there are LOTS of types of families!) who will provide a safe & caring home environment, basic room & board (3 meals/day and a permanent bed - can share a room with a host sibling of the same gender within 3 years of age), and reasonable transportation (to & from team practices, rides to the mall, pick-ups from a friend's house, etc).

We have a vetting process for host families to ensure the safety of all - including an online application (www.ie-usa.org), a criminal background check (for any family member 18+ living at home full time) and in-home interview.  We also call references as provided in the application.  Students go through a similar vetting process, and also need teacher's recommendations and a English proficiency exam.  iE requires a minimum English language score in order to gain admittance into the program.

Students come with a willingness and openness to learn - about a new culture, a new high school, a new family, a new city/state - and also to share about their country and way of life.  Host families can gain a relationship that can truly last a lifetime.

We're excited to have several students already enrolled for 2020-21 at Hopkins HS, are working with Champlin Park HS for enrollment, and have also placed at Elk River HS, St Paul Central HS, Park Center HS among others in the Twin Cities area.  We have several Local Coordinators within these communities who would love to help you with this experience!

Reach out today for more information or just to have a conversation about what hosting could look like for your family.  Call/text Regional Director Judy at 920-241-3878 or email j.hintz@international-experience.net.  If hosting isn't right for you but you know someone who would make a PERFECT host family, make a referral on our website and earn $200!  https://www.ie-usa.org/make-a-referral/host-family-referral-200/

Volunteer: COVID Code Red Responder

America’s blood centers need donors #NowMoreThanEver. The COVID-19 pandemic is devastating our blood supply: blood drives have been canceled and donors are afraid to visit centers. The American Red Cross has recommended hospitals reduce blood product utilization by 25%. This is a deadly shortage that affects millions, including anemic, transplant, cancer, surgery, sickle cell, trauma, and pregnant patients. There is no alternative for blood.

In response, we have launched our COVID Code Red campaign to support blood centers and the healthcare system. The goal of this campaign is to start a social movement to bring greater awareness and rally young people nationwide to advocate for their local centers. UBI leadership would provide support to those volunteers or Code Red Responders. Responders have the opportunity to make a substantial impact on the health of their community and give back during this hard time.

Volunteer: Be Culture Rich!

Share your culture while learning the culture of an international exchange student - without leaving your home!  I am looking for volunteer host families for the following high school exchange students (August 2020 - June 2021).

Marcel (male, 16, from Germany #42506) is interested in sports (Golf, Skiing), likes video games, enjoys babysitting (recently completed an internship in a Kindergarten) and spending time with his younger brothers, and likes pets.  He also likes to cook and bake. Marcel requested placement in the Midwest - somewhere like WI!

Emilia (female, 16, from Germany #44153) likes horses (and really, all pets), playing tennis, spending time with Church activities and reading.  She does follow a vegetarian diet.

Jule (female, 15, from Germany #42513) likes tennis, fencing, skiing and photography.  She is very organized and works on managing her schoolwork and schedule very independently.  She would love to become a part of her host family and experience everyday life in America.

Host families provide three meals per day, reasonable transportation, and a bed, plus a willingness to share your culture, while learning about the culture of your exchange student.

Students have their own health insurance and spending money. They are excited for the chance to spend a year as an American high school student!! PM for more info, call 920-241-3878 or email me at j.hintz@international-experience.net.

Volunteer: Volunteer Host Families Needed!

International Experience (iE) is in need of volunteer host families for exchange students arriving this fall.

Now, I know what you’re probably thinking… how on earth could our family decide to host an overseas student at a time like this?!   Well, iE will not bring students into an unsafe situation. We always follow the guidelines of the Department of State, so if they feel it is unsafe then the students won't come. These students are also not set to arrive until August, and it would be nice if our lives looked different then than they do now.

Student exchanges became popular after World War II, and are intended to increase the participants' understanding and tolerance of other cultures, as well as improving their language skills and broadening their social horizons. Student exchanges also increased further after the end of the Cold War.  It is safe to say that the global COVID-19 pandemic is another experience showing we are all people, no matter what country or location we call home.

I'm happy to chat, so please ask me any questions you'd like.  Contact me via phone/text at 920-241-3878 or email j.hintz@international-experience.net.

Volunteer: Face Masks Needed for At-Risk Population

Emma Norton provides housing and supportive services to more than 300 individuals and families who have experienced homelessness with the additional challenge of mental illness, chemical dependency, or physical disability. We operate 2 site-based facilities in Saint Paul (dorm-style housing for 50 women and individuals) and Maplewood (13 townhomes for single-parent families with 3 or more children). Emma Norton also partners with small landlords throughout Ramsey County to provide low-barrier, affordable housing throughout the community.

There is growing evidence that wearing masks, even homemade cloth masks, can seriously reduce the risk of COVID-19 infection. In light of the shortage of medical masks, we are asking for volunteers to help by making DIY cloth masks for all of our staff and residents.

The Minnesota Department of Health provided this pattern for DIY masks: https://www.mdh.org/sites/www/Uploads/files/Downloads/ClothMaskPattern1.pdf

For more information on alternative masks, you can read the following release from the MDH: https://www.health.state.mn.us/diseases/coronavirus/hcp/masksalt.pdf

Please coordinate all donations with Victoria at vvirasy@emmanorton.org. Per MDH guidelines only essential personnel may enter Emma Norton facilities at this time.

Volunteer: Food Rescue Volunteer (Age 18 +)

ABOUT TC FOOD JUSTICE
TC Food Justice is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Minneapolis. Since March 2016, we have been working with co-ops, grocery stores, and farmers markets to re-distribute their unsalable foods to local hunger relief organizations. We focus on vegetables, fruits, and nutrient rich breads because hunger relief organizations often find it challenging to consistently provide fresh food options for their clients. We seek to improve food insecure individuals’ access to fresh, nutritious food.

FOOD RESCUE PROGRAM
The largest and longest-running program at TC Food Justice is our Food Rescue Program. This program is the core of our work. We find donors with excess produce that they wish to donate instead of discard; partner with nearby hunger relief organizations to plan weekly produce drop-offs; and coordinate our volunteers to collect, sort, and deliver the food by bike or by car. We are proud to serve smaller grocers and hunger relief organizations that have been excluded from traditional, larger-scale food rescue programs. We deliver food the same or next day, maximizing its quality and likelihood of being consumed. All our deliveries operate free of cost to donor and recipient organizations. Some food rescues are family friendly.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITIES
We are looking for volunteers to lead new weekly food rescue shifts that have become available. The current open shifts are as follows, but new rescues are usually available often. Please apply on our website at www.tcfoodjustice.org/volunteer.

-Saturday, Weekly: Lakewinds Co-op | Richfield --> Augsburg Campus Kitchen | Augsburg University
Pick-Up: Saturdays at 9:30-10am
Drop-Off: Saturday at 10:30am

Weekly volunteer food rescues take an average of 30 to 90 minutes to complete and can be done using a personal vehicle or a bicycle and TCFJ's bike trailer (certain rescues only). The average weekly food rescue diverts more than 80 pounds of fresh produce or bread from being discarded and diverts it to our community members who need it most. As a TCFJ volunteer, you will be able to track your personal impact on food waste and hunger using our food rescue web application, along with being able to sign up for shifts, schedule absences, and enter food rescue data. Volunteers are trained by TCFJ staff then lead the rescue independently once they feel comfortable. All volunteers who commit to a weekly food rescue are eligible for their free TCFJ t-shirt after their 3rd food rescue.

Fill out our volunteer application at tcfoodjustice.org/volunteer and mention you saw this posting on Hand On Twin Cities. Please let us know which weekly shift of those listed above that you'd like to you lead. There are other opportunities to volunteer including opportunities for groups. Find out more at www.tcfoodjustice.org/volunteer.

Volunteer: New Employee Orientation Development (Age 25 +)

The City of Roseville is looking to develop a comprehensive New Employee Orientation Program. We are hoping to develop a program template that can help us on-board new employees in order to:

Make them independently productive as quickly as possible by giving them the tools and resources they need Provide them with relevant information Integrate them into the culture of the organization Build and establish meaningful relationships that will continue after the traditional orientation program ends Set the stage for a positive and long-term employee

This program should include cross-departmental collaboration to determine what each department’s needs are in the on-boarding process. It will require research into best practices for orientation programs.

We are looking to establish guidelines for an organization-wide orientation program that can be implemented across all departments easily. We are seeking recommendations on resources, tools and practices for efficient on-boarding. In addition, we would like to develop templates for presentations, checklists, or other tools that can be utilized by supervisors based on research, best practices and organizational needs.

Volunteer: Project Home Day Center Weekend Meal Teams

Every Saturday and Sunday, teams of volunteers prepare and serve lunch and dinner for the families at the Project Home Day Center. Each team creates a menu, provides the food, prepares the meal, dines with the families, and cleans up afterwards. Meals are served buffet-style with team members joining families and staff at the tables after the families are served. A team’s time commitment is approximately two-three hours, which includes meal preparation in our licensed kitchen, dining with families, and cleanup. Teams are composed of about 4-8 adults; supervised older children are welcome. Lunch is served at noon, and dinner is served at 4:30pm. Come as early as you need to prepare.

At any given time, we have about 40 individuals, parents/grandparents with children, staying in our shelters. On the weekends, we allow weekend passes, so not all families stay at the day center during the weekend and they are able to connect with local friends and family. For weekend meals, we usually average around 10-12 people on Saturdays and 15-20 on Sundays. You are always welcome to call the day center's office at 651-225-9354 the morning of your shift to get an accurate head count.

If you would like more information about meal teams and duties, please contact the coordinator, Wade Piper, at wpiper@interfaithaction.org.

Volunteer: Project Home SPIN Cycle

SPIN Cycle relies on the power of volunteers to offer our families a reliable way to ensure that they won’t have to go to school or work in dirty clothes. SPIN Cycle volunteers will sign up to pick up a load of laundry from the Day Center, bring it to their home or a laundromat, wash it, and return it by the same time the next day. For so many of us washing a load of laundry is a simple household chore, but for our families this service will help them feel that they are approaching every new day refreshed and ready for whatever their day may hold. We are actively looking for volunteers who are looking to get involved in a relatively low-commitment, high-impact volunteer opportunity. Please sign up below if you would like to be a part of SPIN Cycle!

To ensure that we have time to prepare a basket for pickup, please sign up at least 24 hours in advance.

If you have any questions, please reach out to Wade Piper at any time at wpiper@interfaithaction.org or (218)639-2624

We are seeking Patient Discharge Escorts to join our team who can commit to a weekly shift. Several shift times are available for each day of the week between 8am to 7pm, and 9am to 7pm on weekends.

Volunteer: HELP Aide (Hospital Elder Life Program), Methodist Hospital (Age 21 +)

Park Nicollet Methodist Hospital is looking for new people to join the team of HELP volunteers!

The Hospital Life Elder Program (HELP) is designed to reduce delirium in elderly patients admitted to the hospital. Volunteers are an important part of the care team - making visits to patients, communicating with medical staff, and documenting important information about patient health.

Volunteers must be at least 21 years old, enjoy working with elderly people, and able to commit to a weekly 4-hour shift for 6 months of service. It is a terrific opportunity for someone wanting a meaningful volunteer experience or someone working toward a medical career hoping to gain one-to-one patient interaction.

In 2018, HELP volunteers at Methodist Hospital made 3, 349 visits to patients up to 3 times a day to have conversations and facilitate brief interactions designed to prevent delirium. Delirium is the sudden onset of severe confusion, and is a preventable condition in many instances. It can have serious complications and may result in a loss of ability for self-care and independence. Of the patients visited, 98 percent maintained their cognitive status.

New HELP volunteer training is held quarterly. Please contact Park Nicollet Volunteer Services (volunteer@parknicollet.com) for more information on the program, training, and how to apply to be a volunteer. Learn more about HELP across the HealthPartners system here: https://www.healthpartners.com/hp/about/about-blog/delirium-prevention-in-healthpartners-hospitals.html.
