Food Shelf Volunteer

Purpose: The Food Shelf volunteer is responsible for providing clients with great customer service while creating a positive and welcoming environment in the Food Shelf.

Description of Role:

The role of Food Shelf volunteer enhances our organization’s ability to destigmatize the food shelf shopping experience by providing great customer service to clients shopping in the food shelf. By demonstrating our organization’s values, volunteers will employ empathy and understanding as well as practicing non-judgement and inclusion to foster a welcoming environment. Volunteers in this position will receive initial training and ongoing support from food program staff and work alongside several fellow Food Shelf Volunteers.

StyleXchange Sorting Volunteer

Purpose: The StyleXchange Sorting volunteer will assess the quality, seasonality, and usability of the clothing items that are donated.

Description of Role:

As a clothing sorting volunteer, you will process donated items and prepare them for the store floor. Providing an inclusive and welcoming experience for all shoppers is our goal! You'll be making a real difference in the lives of people in need by providing low-barrier access for everyone to receive high-quality clothing for free or at a low cost in our thrift store. 

Volunteer Duties and responsibilities.

·        Understand and abide by quality standards set by Valley Outreach to ensure positive client experience. Consider quality and seasonality, understand what "usable condition" means, and center the dignity of shoppers.

·        Work independently and use decision-making skills to effectively sort, select, and evaluate donated goods in line with our quality standards, using "Keep - Pass - Shred " sorting process.

·        Follow established processes for organizing, tagging, and properly adding items into inventory to prepare them for the store floor.

·        Maintain area cleanliness and organization.

Description of Role:

The role of StyleXchange Volunteer enhances our organization’s ability to directly impact our mission by providing low-barrier access for clients to receive high-quality clothing in an inclusive and welcoming thrift environment—all at no cost to them! As a StyleXchange store volunteer, upholding the dignity and integrity of our clients is at the forefront of every interaction.

Key Duties and Responsibilities:

·        Welcome shoppers, answer questions, and assist, as necessary.

·        Follow customer service standards established by Valley Outreach to provide equitable, dignified, and respectful treatment for all shoppers.

·        Operate a register, using our simple tablet point of sale process. Follow cash handling and credit card processing procedures.

·        Assist with other related tasks, such as cleaning, restocking, merchandising, etc.

·        Be reliable and responsible.

Key Requirements and Expectations:

·        Interest (or experience) in providing high quality customer service.

·        Comfortable using computer applications, iPad, or other tablets.

Volunteer Duties and Responsibilities

·        Sort, store, and distribute bulk food products that are delivered to our warehouse.

·        Follow food safety guidelines provided for each category of product and dispose properly of products that do not meet guidelines.

·        Ensure a safe working space by following all warehouse safety guidelines.

Volunteer Requirements and Expectations:

·        A friendly demeanor

·        A desire to serve others.

·        Be punctual for your volunteer shift.

·        Follow Valley Outreach Standard of Appearance guidelines.

Vigil Volunteer

In this role, you would start by assessing the area and creating a plan. After you have created a plan, we would set up a date for you to lead other volunteers in completing the project as a group. If you'd like, you could continue providing periodic assessments and upkeep of the area throughout the summer.

Food sorting plays a vital role in ensuring that families who visit Today’s Harvest receive healthy, safe, and high-quality food—all while helping reduce food waste in our community.

Food sorting is the process of organizing and preparing rescued food so it’s safe, fresh, and ready to share with our community. When food donations arrive—often from grocery stores, food rescue partners, or community drives—volunteers help sort through the items to check for quality and safety.

This includes:

Separating food into categories such as produce, bread, meat, dairy, and dry goods.

Removing items that are spoiled, damaged, or unsafe to distribute.

Organizing market-ready food so it can be stocked quickly and efficiently.

Composting, garbage or recycling items when appropriate.

Individuals or groups needed for yard care at one of our Wingspan group homes. Whether that be raking, weeding, planting, pruning, painting, or general cleanup, we are always looking for more volunteers to come and enjoy the fresh air and refreshments while making our clients’ yards a thing of beauty! 

Wingspan Life Resources is a non-profit organization that offers residential care in group homes and In-Home programs to adults with developmental disabilities. For over 53 years, Wingspan has provided our clients with enriching living spaces, and the activities and experiences that make those spaces truly a home. We would not be able to accomplish this without our wonderful volunteers helping to keep our yards and landscapes looking pleasant and welcoming.

Interested in taking a couple hours to brighten someone’s season? We are very flexible on days, times, durations, and locations, and will try to match you with a group home location of highest need that works best for your travel time. AFC’s youth program engage in peer-led activities that aid in the development of career, leadership, advocacy, organizing, and wellness skills. This training takes place in the kitchen, garden, classroom, and even in the music studio. AFC’s youth are paid for their participation in the YTOP program as they learn farming, culinary, and entrepreneurial skills while increasing their positive social connections and developing their emotional well-being.

Breakfast kits are a priority for our youth group as we are trying to feed 15 youth every week. These are items that the youth team listed as priorities:

The Green Crew is seeking 4–6 motivated youth leaders to join our BioChar Innovation Team, a year-long environmental leadership opportunity focused on transforming environmental challenges into measurable solutions.

This is not a typical volunteer position.

As a BioChar Innovation Project Leader, you'll help lead one of the Green Crew's most innovative conservation initiatives. Working alongside fellow youth leaders and conservation mentors, you'll help transform invasive buckthorn into biochar, deploy biochar in water-quality improvement projects, and collect real-world data to determine whether the approach works.

This project combines environmental science, engineering, leadership, restoration, and data analysis into a single hands-on experience.

You'll help build and operate a real environmental field experiment while generating meaningful data that can guide future conservation efforts.

Project Leaders serve for approximately 12 months and are expected to participate in one to two Sundays per month, along with occasional leadership meetings, training opportunities, and project events.

The Green Crew is seeking 2–3 exceptional youth leaders to serve as American Elm Restoration Fellows and help steward one of the first long-term field studies of its kind.

This is not a typical volunteer position.

As an American Elm Restoration Fellow, you will help care for and monitor a living collection of disease-resistant American Elms while contributing to a restoration effort that could help guide the future of American Elm conservation. You will become part scientist, part steward, and part conservation leader—helping ensure that these trees survive, thrive, and continue to inform restoration efforts for years to come.

As an American Elm Restoration Fellow, you will:

American Elm Restoration Fellows serve for approximately 12 months.

Working alongside fellow youth leaders and conservation mentors, you'll cultivate native mushroom species, restore fungal communities in local forests, and conduct field experiments exploring whether fungi can help break down contaminants found in Minnesota River dredge material.

This project combines environmental science, ecology, biotechnology, restoration, leadership, and data collection into a single hands-on experience.

The Green Crew is seeking 2-3 exceptional youth leaders to serve as Bluff Restoration Project Leaders and help guide one of our most ambitious ecological restoration efforts.

This is not a typical volunteer position.

As a Bluff Restoration Project Leader, you'll help lead restoration activities, coordinate volunteers, monitor ecological recovery, and contribute to a long-term effort to transform a damaged landscape into a healthy native ecosystem.

If you are a people person with experience as a creative storyteller, or an organized community connector, Caring for Cats could use your help. Our remote volunteer positions offer flexible scheduling, with occasional evening Zoom meetings (monthly or less).

Join our volunteer team and help Caring for Cats provide shelter, care, and second chances for cats in need.

Scoop litter, clean various shelter areas, sweep and mop the floors, feed the cats and kittens, provide basic grooming and socializing, and provide much-needed love and attention. This is a typical starting role for new volunteers without previous shelter experience.

All volunteers must be 18+ and able to make a one year volunteer commitment of at least 5 hours each month. Physical requirements include standing, bending, reaching, and lifting.

Meet at W. Lake of the Isles Pkwy & W. 28th St to grab supplies. Then head out to clean up along the shore line and take care of our community!

You may want to wear tall boots to reach trash at the edge of the lake. Please be cautious as we sometimes find sharp objects.

Bring your friends and family! You are welcome to bring your canoes and kayaks.

We are always looking for people to assist at our special events throughout the year, including our Summer Celebration Picnic, Gala, and more!

Duties typically include serving food, dismissing tables, leading activities, etc.

Corporate and group volunteers are welcome to assist with projects such as building beautification, assisting with large art pieces for our Art Speaks program, and gathering supplies to assemble kits for the people we serve.

We request that groups donate or provide supplies needed to complete the project.

Wish granters are essential to fulfilling each child’s wish. They work in teams of two or three and help the wish child determine their heartfelt wish. Wish granters create an exceptional wish experience through building a relationship with the child and their family. Wish children come from all different backgrounds and cultures, so with the help of bilingual wish granters, a wish child can communicate in a language that they are most comfortable with during the wish process! It also greatly reduces the stress for other family members. We welcome all applicants, but have a particular need for volunteers who can speak Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Oromo, and Arabic at any level of proficiency. ASL is also in demand. Training is provided and is flexible with your schedule!

Thank you for your interest in helping kids with critical illnesses and their families.

This is a wonderful opportunity to create hope, strength, and joy for a child with a critical illness! Wish granters will be able to build a relationship with a child in their community and connect with the child’s family. Wish granters assist the child throughout the whole process from helping brainstorm wish ideas, to helping make it all come true. Wish Granters work in teams of two or three to assure the wish is fulfilled. No experience needed; we will provide training flexible with your schedule.

As of June 2026, we especially need volunteers who can work with wish kids in Anoka County.

Organizing Children's Space Volunteer

Volunteers help create and maintain a safe, clean, and welcoming environment for children by organizing activity areas, materials, and supplies. This role supports staff and ensures that children have access to well-arranged, engaging spaces for learning and play. Responsibilities: Organize toys, books, games, and learning materials.

Family Day 2026 is a cornerstone event of MNPOC Pride’s annual programming, focused on creating a safe, affirming, and culturally responsive space for LGBTQ+ people of color, youth, and families. Hosted in the heart of the community, this free public event brings together hundreds of attendees for a day of celebration, education, and resource-sharing.

The event includes live entertainment featuring local artists, a diverse range of community resource providers, health and wellness services including HIV testing and prevention education, youth-focused programming, and free food to reduce barriers to participation. Family Day prioritizes accessibility, cultural representation, and community healing, while fostering connections between attendees and essential services.

Through this event, MNPOC Pride aims to strengthen community bonds, increase access to critical resources, and create a visible, joyful space where LGBTQ+ people of color and their families are celebrated and supported.

Are you interested in creating meaningful gifts for unhoused or housing insecure individuals in our community? Build hygiene kits!

Did you know Minneapolis and St. Paul school districts have 5+% of their students who are experiencing housing insecurity? Additionally, health clinics are finding patients express a need for hygiene items during health screenings.

Let's help address this need by making hygiene kits for struggling individuals and families.

We are looking for businesses, community groups and neighbors to purchase travel/personal size hygiene products and build our 8 piece hygiene kits for students, individuals and families struggling to afford hygiene items. 

We ask that all kit items be placed in Ziploc bags and each kit be filled with:

Project for Pride in Living is looking for individuals who would like to volunteer within our Access Lab on a weekly basis.

The shift is 3.5 hours each week on either Monday/Tuesday/Wednesday/Thursday. 

9:00am-12:30pm or 12:30pm-4:00pm

Access Lab volunteers will work with our participants on a variety of tasks that could include resume review, job searches, helping participants build up keyboarding skills, giving guidance on how to fill out online job applications, pointing participants to other resources and programs that could be helpful to them and more.

Volunteers DO NOT need to attend orientation, just come and sign the waiver (17 and younger will need to have a signed waiver from their parent or guardian).

Grab your gardening gear and perform general landscaping such as pulling weeds, planting annuals/perennials, trimming shrubs, and cleaning up brush. Help to give all our homes an immediate feeling of warmth and welcoming. This could be an on-going opportunity or a one-time event.
