FRIENDLY VISITOR/COMPANION VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers who visit with patients offer companionship, emotional support and aid in decreasing isolation. Furthermore, respite volunteers provide families/caregivers with a much-needed break for various reasons, like running errands, getting groceries and going to appointments. Friendly visitor/companion volunteers complete the training material found in this manual and are available to provide many of the services listed below after receiving instructions from the volunteer coordinator. Friendly visitor/companion volunteers are under the direct supervision of the volunteer coordinator. Following are some examples of patient assignments: • Offering companionship • Reading a newspaper or book • Being a caring presence • Taking a walk outside or around the facility • Playing music • Preparing a meal • Cleaning the dishes • Capturing a patient’s life history • Playing board games • Knitting or crocheting • Mowing the lawn • Looking at old photos • Reminiscing • Starting a load of laundry • Sitting with patient while caregiver leaves

THE MOST IMPORTANT NEED OF THE BEREAVED

Often, the bereaved need to be listened to and have feelings accepted and validated, and to make the journey through grief process at their own pace. It is not uncommon for well-meaning people, loved ones and strangers alike, to encourage the bereaved to be strong and to deny their pain by having an attitude of gratitude, or to believe that “moving on” can happen within days or weeks of the loss of a loved one. It has been said that this culture is uncomfortable with issues surrounding death. This may be because many are reluctant to accept the limitations that reality places on the ability to control one’s lives. For the bereaved, finding a person who will walk with them through grief and who can accept all the often-conflicting feelings without passing judgment is a priceless treasure. As a volunteer, the role is not to fix the grief, it is the privilege of being a companion, a facilitator, and a mirror of the healing process.

Volunteers who offer services in the hospice office setting provide valuable services for hospice. Office volunteers complete the training material found in this manual and are available to provide many of the services listed below after receiving instructions from the volunteer coordinator. Office volunteers are under the direct supervision of the volunteer coordinator. If the office volunteer desires to have patient contact, they complete additional training specifically designed for patient interaction.

Following are some examples of duties performed by an office volunteer: • Filing, typing and answering phones • Mailing of bereavement newsletters, or public service announcements requesting hospice volunteers • Assembling volunteer workshop manuals and in-service packets • Assisting with preparation and setup for volunteer workshops • Posting requests for volunteers in various community locations (supermarkets, libraries, recreation centers, colleges, universities, etc.) • Copying in-services, forms, or other materials • Performing inventory of hospice supplies • Administering hospice library of books and tapes • Assembling marketing and education packets • Filing of accounts payable invoices

SPECIAL PROJECT VOLUNTEER Volunteers who offer talents by providing the patients with arts and crafts as well as other special activities are vital in providing indirect support to the patients and caregivers. The special project volunteers complete the training material found in this manual and may provide any number of the services listed below. Special project volunteers (no direct patient contact and minimal contact in the office) are not required to complete TB screening (administrative volunteers are required to complete TB screening). If the special project volunteer desires to have patient contact, responsibility to complete additional training especially designed for patient interaction and TB screening is necessary. Following are some examples of duties performed by special project volunteers: • Arts and crafts • Quilts, afghans, bibs, slippers, and lap robes • Create cards for holidays and special occasions • Manning booth at health fairs • Assisting with memorial services such as helping to provide food and greeting bereaved families • Assisting with marketing for volunteers and hospice

About AAOP

Asian American Organizing Project is a non-partisan organization led by and for young Asian Minnesotans in the Twin Cities. Through our grassroots organizing efforts and programming, we aim to develop young Asian community leaders to resist oppression and co-create a more just future for their families, schools, communities, and cities.

Emergency rooms can be a scary place for many people. With the large number of patients seeking care at our emergency room, the doctors and nurses don’t have any time to spare for create comforts. You can fill this gap by ensuring patients have everything they need - warm blankets, pillows, snacks. Additionally, you’ll support staff by transporting patients in wheelchairs, restocking supplies, and turning over rooms between patients.

We are an animal rescue, and also a Sanctuary with physical property where unadoptable Great Danes live out their lives. 

GDROMN is looking for a grant writer to find and submit proposals for monies to improve our Sanctuary, cover medical bills for both rescue and sanctuary dogs, and cover payroll for our employees at the sanctuary who work non-stop to keep the dogs happy, fed and healthy.

Please respond if you have the time to research grants and write proposals. We can furnish all of the financial and other information needed to submit these requests.

Help us with our residents at seasonal events, monthly in-house health appointments, monthly birthday parties or day trips.  These volunteers may escort residents, help serve at parties, assist with set-up or clean-up for a special event and more.

The focus of Emergency Department Volunteers is to provide comfort and service to Emergency Department patients and their families keeping inline with our Commitment to Care standards. They serve as the go between for patients, families, and guest services and  the ED staff, ensuring that the patients needs are met.

There is nothing like a furry face and wagging tail to brighten your day and bring a smile to your face. For patients in hospitals, pet therapy decreases anxiety, lowers blood pressure, and improves overall health.

Our pet therapy volunteers offer comfort and support to patients, families, and staff. As they go about the hospital, they leave a trail of smiles everywhere they go in a way that only dogs can do.

Goal of Position 

Volunteer Prep Cooks assist the Shelter Kitchen Specialist prep food to serve to our emergency shelter guests. The shelter provides a safe and dignified space for 22 women and 44 men every night. We provide housing advocacy, healthcare services, toiletry and basic clothing supplies, showers, lockers, and three meals a day. Our goal is to help our shelter guests move into safe, affordable, and stable housing as soon as possible.

PPL's Career Center offers a computer lab open to participants for career-related activities. Lab Volunteers provide 1:1 support to adults learning basic computer skills, offer guidance as they search for employment and educational opportunities online, and tutor basic math and reading skills. We require all PPL volunteers to be vaccinated.

We have a beautiful campus at Johanna Shores. We have volunteers that “stroll” with residents around our campus on the lake surrounded by gardens and flowers. In the winter they stroll inside,  where they can see the beautiful lake and wildlife from our hallways and gathering spots with large windows. In the summer volunteers can stroll with residents on our paved walking trails leading to the lake. If you would like to share some of your time pushing a resident in a wheelchair around our beautiful campus ….. We would love for you to join our volunteer team! 

We are in great need of one-to-one visitors.  Scheduling is very flexible.  We can together on a schedule that works for you. 

 Do you have some extra time to brighten a resident’s day? Residents enjoy visiting with volunteers. You can share stories and life experiences. Go for walks in the garden, read, play a game, or just chat.

Baking with residents

Love to bake?  Love to chat? We have volunteer opportunities baking with residents.   We can provide the recipes and ingredients.  If you have a recipe you'd like to share that's wonderful.   It can be like a baking show where you bake for the residents and tell them all about what your doing and then everyone enjoys the result together after or perhaps you bake cookies and everyone decorates together?  The possibilities are endless.   Days and times are flexible based on volunteer availability.  

To disrupt poverty and inequity PPL's Career Readiness programs provide participants with the skills necessary to get and keep a job, with proven income growth and job placements. How can you support? We would appreciate a donation of laptops to further their studies and development!

(Up to 10 volunteers) Serving a meal to those experiencing homelessness is a fun, rewarding and very manageable volunteer opportunity! You organize a group of 10-15 friends, family or coworkers, plan a menu using your favorite recipes or recipes from our website (www.simpsonhousing.org), purchase groceries, cook and serve a meal to approximately 110 shelter guests. Dinner is served at 7:00 p.m. Depending on the menu, dinner can be provided to 110 people for $200, average price is $400 for the evening meal.

We will work with you to make it as easy as possible. From planning the menu, to figuring out portions, to orienting yourself to the kitchen, we will be there to make sure you have a meaningful and successful evening.

Since 2002, the Northwest Airlines History Center (NWAHC) has been the Upper Midwest’s only museum dedicated to celebrating commercial aviation, showing how Northwest and its precursors enriched the region’s social and economic fabric, and how the company’s scientific and engineering advances made traveling safer and more reliable. We are a 501 (c)(3) nonprofit currently operating a small public museum location at the Crowne Plaza AiRE MSP Hotel in Bloomington, MN, and maintaining archives at Flying Cloud Airport in Eden Prairie, MN. To better inspire young people to pursue careers in aviation and travel, and attract a new generation of museum leadership, our Board has developed a “Go Big” strategic plan to consolidate and expand at a Twin Cities airport location in the mid-2020s. A Business Champion is a strategist, facilitator, supporter, advocate and helps build their client's professional network.  In this role, you will understand the heart and soul of the BIPOC business owner as you support them in activating their dreams. Your job isn’t to direct them, or decide if the dream will ultimately be reached.  You are a sounding board, mentor and coach, helping them determine what they need to start, grow, and/or change to grow their business.  Building trust and bridging any racial challenges is critical.

This is a fantastic opportunity to make a difference and make a connection with an entrepreneur who is committed to growing their business. 

Activity Assistants help during open hours, working with the Library & Community Center Coordinator to create and run programing. Assistants may choose to work on programs that excite them appealing to any age group. 

We are a small nonprofit who does a lot with very little. In order to grow and serve the community better, we need to improve our technology. We know there are grants and funds out there and need help to find the resources and apply.

We are looking for someone to research and help write grants. It would make all the difference to where we can go from here.

Help provide Simpson Housing’s Emergency Homeless Shelter with bedding! Each night 66 single adults sleep at the shelter and we offer a safe, clean, and comfortable bed. These basic bedding materials are crucial to making sure that guests feel comfortable. Our goal is to provide every guest that walks through our doors a new, clean set of sheets and we need your help to do it!

Asian American Organizing Project (AAOP) is soliciting a Request for Proposal from qualified individuals or businesses within Minnesota to recommend and provide human resource (HR) consulting services through an equity and justice lens. The total budget available for this project for the 2023 calendar year is $10,000 with the potential to continue into 2024 if budget and organizational needs permit.

Background

AAOP is a non-partisan organization led by and for young Asian Minnesotans in the Twin Cities. Through our grassroots organizing efforts and programming, we aim to develop young Asian community leaders to resist oppression and co-create a more just future for their families, schools, communities, and cities. AAOP has approximately six full-time employees and one part-time employee. The HR duties are managed by the Executive Director.

Project Scope

The selected bidder will be responsible for providing HR services through an equity and justice lens to the management team and board members. The scope of services to be provided will include, but not limited to:

HR Audit and Compliance

Conduct a one-time HR audit and make recommendations using an equity lens to improve and strengthen HR operations, including legal compliance of practices and policies.

Review and provide recommendations to the employee recruiting, interviewing, reference and background check, hiring and onboarding process.

Assess job descriptions, pay-scale and benefits and assure competitiveness and comparison to similar nonprofit organizations.

Present findings to management team and board members; update employee handbook and assist the management team with rolling out changes to employees.

Employee Relations

Develop and implement processes for regular employee surveys and feedback, and exit interviews.

Provide consultation and training to the management team on disciplinary process, conflict management, performance documentation, employee motivation, recognition and retention and coaching skills.

Make recommendations for long-term HR considerations, such as ongoing training for employees and management team, hiring and onboarding an employee responsible for HR duties and succession planning.

Our Emergency Shelter is home to 21 men and women everyday of the year who are experiencing homelessness. We are in need of a volunteers to help provide and serve dinner. Dinner is served at 7:00 pm each night and ends around 8:30 pm.

PURPOSE:
The purpose of your position is to "create smiles in the eyes of people we serve" by fulfilling Presbyterian Homes’ mission and operating philosophies.
The volunteer order fulfillment opportunity would assist staff by packaging finished meal products for distribution and delivery. Looking for a skilled photographer to take photos of our theatre productions for promotional and archival purposes. 

Requirement: Photography and editing skills, access to your own camera and editing software. Experience with theatre, concert, or event photography a bonus, but not required!

Time Commitment: One staged photo shoot per main stage production (10-12 staged shots; 1 hour; before or after the rehearsal), typically on the Wednesday night before opening, plus editing.

The purpose of the Patient cart is to bring a bit of cheer and complimentary items to patients and guests while they are on our campus. Volunteers will round the hospital units and waiting rooms offering boredom buster activities such as sudukos, coloring books, and playing cards. This position requires two volunteers, so it is a great opportunities for friends and siblings who want to volunteer together.

Simpson Housing operates a shelter for homeless adults and housing programs for individuals and families moving into housing. Our goal is to provide every new guest that walks through our doors a new, clean blanket for their bed. We're running out of blankets and will need them for the coming winter months!

You can help by buying a new blanket during your regular shopping trip. You can also encourage your friends to do the same. We can accept new twin, full, and queen size blankets. Please no throw size blankets or baby blankets.

Do you travel or know someone who does? Simpson Shelter needs unopened travel size soap, shampoo, and lotion.

Our emergency overnight shelter serves 44 men and 22 women every night in south Minneapolis. We provide meals, showers, laundry, and basic hygiene supplies. We're running out of several items and can use your help!

We are always in need of appropriate hair care items such as conditioner and styling products for our African-American guests and those with curly or more textured hair. The Guthrie is a Minnesota institution dedicated to engaging exceptional theater artists in classic and contemporary plays. Volunteer ushers sign up for 1.5 hour shifts. Some shifts will require walking up and down a long steep set of stairs. Some shifts can be done with limited mobility. All shifts are labeled with their mobility requirements so everyone can find an opportunity that fits their needs.

Help provide Simpson Housing’s Emergency Homeless Shelter with basic self-care supplies that everyone deserves! Each night 66 single adults sleep at the shelter and we offer basic needs for everyone on their first night, then throughout their stay. These basic supplies are crucial to making sure that guests feel comfortable, dignified, and healthy.

We serve 66 homeless adults in our shelter every night and about 95 cups of coffee. You can help by organizing a coffee drive!

If you're a coffee drinker, I know you appreciate how a hot cup can make you feel ready for your day. Shelter guests get up as early as 3 am to take several buses to get to work and coffee helps them out the door. Many of our guests drink a cup of decaf in the evening, hungry and waiting for dinner.

For non-coffee drinkers, we also can use tea bags and hot cocoa packets!

Although we purchase our coffee from a warehouse store, it still is a large expense. We brew both caffeinated and decaf and we would welcome any brand or size (must be ground).

Simpson Shelter needs covert volunteers to go undercover and bring us undergarments!

Our shelter serves 22 women and 44 men each night. We can use men's boxers, women's underwear, bras, t-shirts, and socks. We all know that we feel our best when we have decent and clean undergarments.

All items must be new, of course.

Bring us your donation of new items or put a box out in your workplace or faith community to collect items from people you know.

Ushers greet and seat audience members; assemble programs; help with concessions; straighten up after the performance. Training is provided.

Our specially-trained servers will sell wine and beer at our performances. As with other jobs at the theatre, it is a volunteer position (and servers cannot accept tips.) Ideally, servers work at least once per show during our 6-show season (September-July). All servers must agree to abide by theatre policies, including Code of Conduct, Anti-Discrimination and Harassment, and Alcohol Serving Policies

At MVOB, we choose blankets for children ages 2-17 based on their individual requests.

Fleece blankets are a great way to make sure a child’s bedding matches their interests. This opportunity is also great for individuals and groups. 

Please find our instructions for blanket making attached to this email. Blankets should be at least 60 x 90 inches. Please check our fleece blanket instructions for more information. 

We welcome individuals, families, work teams, youth groups, and others to help us deliver beds and dream-kits to kids in our community. 

Deliveries are Fridays and Saturdays from 9:00 am - 12:30pm.

We are in great need of Friday volunteers!

What our volunteers do: First, you'll help My Very Own Bed staff assemble Dream Kits (sheets, blanket, pillow, book, & stuffed animal) to go with each bed. Then you'll follow our delivery van in your own vehicle, and help deliver beds to 2-4 families' homes around the Twin Cities. At each home, we'll carry mattresses, frames and Dream Kits from the truck to the home. This is a wonderful opportunity for families with kids- we have the kids assemble the Dream Kits and then they're put in charge in carrying the Dream Kits into the families' homes. Families' are given the option of having us set up the beds. This is a great way for volunteers to interact with parents and children! 

Accessibility: Volunteers who cannot/don't want to lift 50+ pounds are invited to carry Dream Kits rather than mattresses/bedframes. Volunteers must have their own vehicle to participate in deliveries, but you will not need to put any beds or supplies in your car. We prioritize the safety of the families that we serve and require a face mask when we go into families' homes.
