Housing Justice Center is hiring an AmeriCorps VISTA Tenant Organizer for the 2023-24 Service Year!

HJC Overview

Housing Justice Center (HJC) is a nonprofit public interest legal and policy advocacy organization dedicated to the production and preservation of affordable housing and the protection of the rights of people who need affordable places to call home. The tools we use for this work are community organizing, research, education, policy advocacy, and legal advocacy.

HJC VISTA Project Overview

This VISTA project seeks to expand Housing Justice Center’s capacity to address housing instability, the lack of tenant rights knowledge, and limited organizing infrastructure for renters and manufactured housing residents in exurban Minnesota. Key issues include displacement threats, discrimination, mismanagement, unaffordability, and repair problems. This project will focus on the exurban Twin Cities counties of Wright, Sherburne, Isanti, and Chisago. The VISTA Tenant Organizer will build capacity to support low-income disabled, BIPOC, and/or immigrant renters by forging new community partnerships, developing and delivering tenant rights training, and helping create at least one new resident association in a targeted property.

This VISTA Member is part of HOME Line's Tenant Organizing VISTA Project cohort.

VISTA Responsibilities

The HJC VISTA Tenant Organizer will build organizing infrastructure in the targeted counties of Wright, Isanti, Sherburne, and Chisago. Duties include:

Moments Hospice is looking for craft volunteers who are interested in sewing, crocheting, or knitting patriotic wall coverings/blankets. The wall covering should have a patriotic design and be approximately six feet by four feet. These patriotic blankets will be placed over a deceased Veteran, or can be used as a keepsake for the family.

We also need craft volunteers to make fidget blankets, hospital gowns, lavender sachets, rice heating blankets, and Thinking of You cards for our patients.

The Loppet Foundation is searching for Junior Loppet Assistant Coaches. The Junior Loppet program is a year-round, after-school program that empowers Minneapolis middle schoolers through healthy outdoor activities like cross country skiing, mountain biking, trail running, orienteering, and paddling. We focus on partnering with middle schools where most of the school population is eligible for Free and Reduced Lunch. The program is 2-3 days per week after school and throughout the summer. Students also participate in events, races, weekend camping, and training trips. The program leverages outdoor adventure to help middle schoolers build habits, social and emotional skills, and personal connections that promote success both on and off the trails.

In our schools, we teach the students an oral health curriculum based on the science of a healthy oral lifestyle. In our early childhood programs, we teach the parents how to raise a decay-free child.

Community Health Workers contact the families of urgent-need children to refer them to our partner clinics for comprehensive care.

Our Support Group Facilitators provide support for clients and structure to Support Group meetings (completion of online course training required). Facilitators are provided training and curriculum to encourage engaging and supportive conversations. Our support group facilitators provide: 

Support groups are currently offered virtually on Monday evenings and in-person on Tuesday evenings in Scott County.

We ask our volunteer facilitators to sign up for a minimum of 1 shift per month.

The crisis line advocate answers SVA’s Crisis Line during the weekday evening hours and weekend hours (completion of online course training required). You do not need to be on site for this position; it is done remotely through your home or cell phone.  Although you are “on call” during the entire shift, you may or may not receive calls. Our crisis line shifts start on weeknights at 5pm and go to the following morning at 8:30am. On a typical shift, volunteers may receive anywhere from 0-2 calls. Most volunteers keep their cell phone up at a louder volume and go about their normal activities when they’re on-call. In this role you:

Regular assistance with light cleaning is needed. There is also a donation closet with items such as clothing, households items, and personal hygiene items that needs to be sorted and organized as donations come in. 

The Black Butterfly home consists of a house Mother and five-ten residents. The values of this community are informed by love and respect for one another; trusting relationships, mutual accountability; and healing core hurts.

Items needed for the residents include:

Serve as a transition coach with women who are committed to changing their lives. Typically, an individual will meet with a coach to set specific goals related to the skills that are needed to be self-sufficient. An action plan is developed on how the goals will be accomplished. The coach will provide one-on-one support, resources, and interventions to women as they identify, and access critical basic needs and services related to their transition to independent living.

Be a mentor for women who are working on a journey to improve their lives. Be a friend, listen, and build a positive relationship with a woman who may be engaged with the justice system and afflicted with deep traumas related to violence, addiction, and poverty.

The vigil volunteer provides a supportive presence to dying patients and families when symptoms are under control. The vigil volunteer’s presence is a valuable gift. The vigil volunteer successfully completes vigil volunteer training in addition to friendly visitor training. The vigil volunteer training focuses on the needs of the dying patient and their family. The training includes signs of death and dying during the last hours of the patient’s life, as well as faith practice and cultural differences related to dying.

In hospice, one of the primary goals of care is to relieve a patient’s suffering. The vigil volunteer provides a supportive presence to actively dying patients and their families. When a patient faces the process of dying, coping skills can be taxed and suffering can ensue. Vigil volunteers and other hospice team members can help provide the patient with the most valuable gift - a loving presence.

No one understands the questions and concerns of a U.S. military veteran more than a fellow veteran. That’s why ProMedica/Heartland has developed the Vets-to-Vets program, in which volunteers with similar backgrounds can meet with and assist in the care of U.S. military veteran patients.

Veteran volunteers offer support for veteran patients and caregivers by celebrating and recognizing their contributions to America’s freedom. Veteran volunteers complete the training material found in this manual and are available to provide the services listed below after receiving instructions from the volunteer coordinator. Veteran volunteers are under the direct supervision of the volunteer coordinator.

Following are some examples of veteran patient assignments: • Participating in veteran pinning ceremonies • Offering support through regular companionship visits • Making assurance phone calls • Recording patient’s life history • Reminiscing • Sitting with veteran patient while caregiver leaves

The tuck-in volunteer role is a vital one to the hospice team. The tuck-in volunteer offers phone support to patients who reside in a private residence or in a facility. Our goal is for each patient who may be fragile, anxious or who has had a change in the level of care, to receive a tuck-in call prior to the weekend. Tuck-in volunteers provide support to hospice patients and staff by conducting phone calls to patients/families to assure they have the necessary supplies, medications, and/or support.

Pet visitor volunteers assist with providing comfort and emotional support to patients and their families through therapeutic pet visits. There are two components to a pet visitor volunteer: the handler and the pet. It is most common that dogs are pet visitor volunteers; however, other pets (e.g., cats, miniature horses) may be considered pet volunteers as well. Animal–assisted interactions (which includes animal assisted activities or therapy) provide opportunities for motivational, educational, recreational and/or therapeutic benefits to enhance quality of life for patients and families. Animal-assisted interactions are delivered by specifically trained professionals, paraprofessionals, and/or volunteers in association with animals that meet specific criteria. These trained handlers have successfully completed an evaluation and training course that meets the requirements of an appropriate accrediting agency. Approved accrediting agencies include, Pet Partners, Project Canine, Therapy Dog’s International, or Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Other credentialing agencies are reviewed to ensure adherence to industry standards and approved by the volunteer coordinator. Documentation of credentialing is be kept in the handler’s personnel file in accordance with policy. Completion of a good citizen obedience program is not sufficient for pet utilization.

FRIENDLY VISITOR/COMPANION VOLUNTEERS

Volunteers who visit with patients offer companionship, emotional support and aid in decreasing isolation. Furthermore, respite volunteers provide families/caregivers with a much-needed break for various reasons, like running errands, getting groceries and going to appointments. Friendly visitor/companion volunteers complete the training material found in this manual and are available to provide many of the services listed below after receiving instructions from the volunteer coordinator. Friendly visitor/companion volunteers are under the direct supervision of the volunteer coordinator. THE MOST IMPORTANT NEED OF THE BEREAVED

Often, the bereaved need to be listened to and have feelings accepted and validated, and to make the journey through grief process at their own pace. It is not uncommon for well-meaning people, loved ones and strangers alike, to encourage the bereaved to be strong and to deny their pain by having an attitude of gratitude, or to believe that “moving on” can happen within days or weeks of the loss of a loved one. It has been said that this culture is uncomfortable with issues surrounding death. This may be because many are reluctant to accept the limitations that reality places on the ability to control one’s lives. For the bereaved, finding a person who will walk with them through grief and who can accept all the often-conflicting feelings without passing judgment is a priceless treasure. As a volunteer, the role is not to fix the grief, it is the privilege of being a companion, a facilitator, and a mirror of the healing process.

Volunteers who offer services in the hospice office setting provide valuable services for hospice. Office volunteers complete the training material found in this manual and are available to provide many of the services listed below after receiving instructions from the volunteer coordinator. Office volunteers are under the direct supervision of the volunteer coordinator. If the office volunteer desires to have patient contact, they complete additional training specifically designed for patient interaction.

Following are some examples of duties performed by an office volunteer: • Filing, typing and answering phones • Mailing of bereavement newsletters, or public service announcements requesting hospice volunteers • Assembling volunteer workshop manuals and in-service packets • Assisting with preparation and setup for volunteer workshops • Posting requests for volunteers in various community locations (supermarkets, libraries, recreation centers, colleges, universities, etc.) • Copying in-services, forms, or other materials • Performing inventory of hospice supplies • Administering hospice library of books and tapes • Assembling marketing and education packets • Filing of accounts payable invoices

SPECIAL PROJECT VOLUNTEER Volunteers who offer talents by providing the patients with arts and crafts as well as other special activities are vital in providing indirect support to the patients and caregivers. The special project volunteers complete the training material found in this manual and may provide any number of the services listed below. Special project volunteers (no direct patient contact and minimal contact in the office) are not required to complete TB screening (administrative volunteers are required to complete TB screening). If the special project volunteer desires to have patient contact, responsibility to complete additional training especially designed for patient interaction and TB screening is necessary. We are an animal rescue, and also a Sanctuary with physical property where unadoptable Great Danes live out their lives. 

GDROMN is looking for a grant writer to find and submit proposals for monies to improve our Sanctuary, cover medical bills for both rescue and sanctuary dogs, and cover payroll for our employees at the sanctuary who work non-stop to keep the dogs happy, fed and healthy.

Volunteer Prep Cooks assist the Shelter Kitchen Specialist prep food to serve to our emergency shelter guests. The shelter provides a safe and dignified space for 22 women and 44 men every night. We provide housing advocacy, healthcare services, toiletry and basic clothing supplies, showers, lockers, and three meals a day. Our goal is to help our shelter guests move into safe, affordable, and stable housing as soon as possible.

CAPI is an immigrant-led, nonprofit organization that is dedicated to helping Minnesota’s newest refugees and immigrants gain access to jobs, housing, food, health education, and youth and senior social services in order to promote economic independence, self-determination and social equality.

CAPI has the first and only Asian-specific food shelf in the state. Since 1982, CAPI’s food shelf has been supporting the cultural and nutritional needs of approximately 2,000 individuals each month with more than 450,000 pounds of food each year. The food shelf continues to serve immigrants, refugees, and individuals of all backgrounds.

We are looking to build our community of volunteers to improve the sustainability of our food shelf to better serve community members who are food insecure and utilize our services. Volunteers are crucial in supporting our community members to achieve our mission of "guiding refugees and immigrants toward self-determination and social equality."

We have a beautiful campus at Johanna Shores. We have volunteers that “stroll” with residents around our campus on the lake surrounded by gardens and flowers. In the winter they stroll inside,  where they can see the beautiful lake and wildlife from our hallways and gathering spots with large windows. In the summer volunteers can stroll with residents on our paved walking trails leading to the lake. If you would like to share some of your time pushing a resident in a wheelchair around our beautiful campus ….. We would love for you to join our volunteer team! 

 Pet Visits

Many of our residents miss having a pet of their own. You would put a smile on a resident’s face if you visited with your pet!  No need to be a registered therapy dog.   Just have a loving, gentle, well-behaved personality. 

All visiting animals need to be well behaved and up to date on all vaccines.

We are in great need of one-to-one visitors.  Scheduling is very flexible.  We can together on a schedule that works for you. 

 Do you have some extra time to brighten a resident’s day? Residents enjoy visiting with volunteers. You can share stories and life experiences. Go for walks in the garden, read, play a game, or just chat.

Baking with residents

Love to bake?  Love to chat? We have volunteer opportunities baking with residents.   We can provide the recipes and ingredients.  If you have a recipe you'd like to share that's wonderful.   It can be like a baking show where you bake for the residents and tell them all about what your doing and then everyone enjoys the result together after or perhaps you bake cookies and everyone decorates together?  The possibilities are endless.   Days and times are flexible based on volunteer availability.  

Our marketing department is in need of social media support! Volunteer your expertise! We're flexible, not too demanding, and incredibly grateful for any help we can get. We're a North Minneapolis community center with an early childhood learning center and a host of other programs that need your attention, and that of our followers. Help us steward our clients and funders by showing them the work we're doing.

To disrupt poverty and inequity PPL's Career Readiness programs provide participants with the skills necessary to get and keep a job, with proven income growth and job placements. How can you support? We would appreciate a donation of laptops to further their studies and development!

(Up to 10 volunteers) Serving a meal to those experiencing homelessness is a fun, rewarding and very manageable volunteer opportunity! You organize a group of 10-15 friends, family or coworkers, plan a menu using your favorite recipes or recipes from our website (www.simpsonhousing.org), purchase groceries, cook and serve a meal to approximately 110 shelter guests. Dinner is served at 7:00 p.m. Depending on the menu, dinner can be provided to 110 people for $200, average price is $400 for the evening meal.

We will work with you to make it as easy as possible. From planning the menu, to figuring out portions, to orienting yourself to the kitchen, we will be there to make sure you have a meaningful and successful evening.

The CREW Urban Youth Equestrians is going into it's third season of programming, and we are looking to significantly increase the number of BIPOC youth we serve through our transformational program where BIPOC youth learn how to train and ride horses through emotional self-awareness and self-regulation. 

And we want YOU to join our herd! Grants are a significant source of revenue for our organization, and we would love for you to volunteer your grantwriting skills to help us research and write effective grants to support our program.

A Business Champion is a strategist, facilitator, supporter, advocate and helps build their client's professional network.  In this role, you will understand the heart and soul of the BIPOC business owner as you support them in activating their dreams. Your job isn’t to direct them, or decide if the dream will ultimately be reached.  You are a sounding board, mentor and coach, helping them determine what they need to start, grow, and/or change to grow their business.  Building trust and bridging any racial challenges is critical.

Activity Assistants help during open hours, working with the Library & Community Center Coordinator to create and run programing. Assistants may choose to work on programs that excite them appealing to any age group. 

We are a small nonprofit who does a lot with very little. In order to grow and serve the community better, we need to improve our technology. We know there are grants and funds out there and need help to find the resources and apply.

We are looking for someone to research and help write grants. It would make all the difference to where we can go from here.

Help provide Simpson Housing’s Emergency Homeless Shelter with bedding! Each night 66 single adults sleep at the shelter and we offer a safe, clean, and comfortable bed. These basic bedding materials are crucial to making sure that guests feel comfortable. Our goal is to provide every guest that walks through our doors a new, clean set of sheets and we need your help to do it!

Volunteer in our therapeutic riding and hippotherapy lessons. No horse or experience working with people with disabilities and special needs is required. We provide training for every volunteer role to ensure you are comfortable and confident while volunteering with us.
