Position Description

The Youth Amig@s Mentors provides ongoing support to 5-15 Youth Amig@s. By utilizing a culturally appropriate leadership development curriculum the intern trains Latin@ youth to serve as peer educators (community leaders).  The Youth Amig@s Mentor will work to ensure that the following objectives are met:

  • Increased knowledge of peer education and its impact on Latin@ youth.
  • Increased knowledge of healthy relationships and domestic violence.
  • Support of young Latin@s in developing strategies to learn how to live without violence.
  • Enhancement of personal development in youth and increased youth support networks.

Responsibilities

  • Understand, practice and promote the vision, mission, and values of the organization.
  • Strategic recruitment to ensure that participants are committed to becoming peer educators.
  • Lead and implement youth Amig@s peer education training and workshop activities.
  • Helps facilitate weekly training sessions for youth Amig@s peer educators.
  • Act as a point of contact for communication with youth Amig@s.
  • Participate in a reflective practice during the span of the internship.
  • Seek out and develop partnerships with possible workshop sites and site coordinators.
  • Support and guide Amig@s in preparation for youth led community action projects including: PSAs, the Youth Leadership Conference, and workshop presentations to other youth groups.
  • Maintain accurate records of participant demographics and provide timely statistical and activity reports for purposes of planning and outcome reporting.
  • Survey Amig@s quarterly to assess effectiveness and staff regularly to assess needs.
  • Develop youth Amig@s recognition activities and celebrations
  • Willingness to support in other duties as assigned

Qualifications

  • Combination of education and experience in youth studies, youth development or a similar field.
  • Experience working in/with Latin@ community preferred.
  • Public speaking and group training experience preferred.
  • Have an ability to calmly handle high-pressure situations and manage conflict between youth.
  • Have a demonstrated capacity to conduct training or previous experience teaching in urban settings.
  • Self-starter with ability to manage multiple priorities to ensure meeting deadlines.
  • Bi-lingual in Spanish and English (Highly encouraged); Bi-cultural experiences (Highly encouraged)
  • Ability to travel to various locations and work evenings and some weekend events as needed.
