Oak Savanna Seeding at Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge

Calendar Happens On May 11, 2024
Time 9am-12pm
Expired

Description

Join Great River Greening at Sherburne National Wildlife Refuge. We will be hand seeding up to 40 acres of what will eventually be a restored oak savanna. Currently the understory of this site is overgrown with non-desirable shrubs and trees. This seed will be broadcasted in advance of goat browsing that will occur this summer. The goats will work the seed into the soil as they roam the site and reduce the presence of brush. As the goats reduce brush, the native grasses will be able to grow in their place.

Note: Terrain is flat but seeding area is expansive. Volunteers can expect to walk 3-5 miles over the course of the event. If you would like to participate, but cannot walk 3-5 miles contact Jessica.

This is a family-friendly event. Volunteers of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to attend. No previous knowledge or experience is necessary, we will provide the tools and training required.  Volunteers can expect an easy, flat walk from parking/ facilities to work areas.

There will also be light snacks and extra water available, however, please bring your own reusable water bottle and any additional snacks you may need.

Once you have registered via GivePulse, organizers from Great River Greening will approve your registration and you will receive confirmation. You will continue to receive event reminders as the event nears.

If you have further questions, please contact Jessica at jdrummond@greatrivergreening.org.
