Description

Title of Position:           Volunteer ESL Teacher

 

Purpose:                           To help adult English Language Learners improve their ability to speak, listen, read, and write English.

 

Requirements:              Ability to speak, read and write English; dependable, prompt, flexible, patient, non-judgmental; able to maintain confidentiality.

 

Training:                           Attend the Minnesota Literacy Council’s 12-hour ESL Pre-Service Training. Attend initial orientation meeting with program coordinator. Observe a 2-hour class.  Co-instruct an additional 2-hour class.  Detailed curriculum and texts are provided.

 

                                        *An additional two hours of training is required for every twelve months of service, and can be fulfilled through one of the many in-service trainings offered by the literacy council, or through another approved workshop or event.

 

Location:                          Open Door Learning Center – Northside

611 Van White Memorial Blvd, Minneapolis, MN 55411

 

Time Commitment:    Three hours per week for a minimum of 4 months. Volunteer teachers are expected to arrive 30 minutes prior to class, and to complete a lesson report after class.

 

Duties:                           -     Arrive regularly and punctually.

  • Work cooperatively with coordinators and other volunteers to determine lesson content and approaches.
  • Provide instruction for ESL classes of 5-20 adult learners.
  • Record class attendance
  • Inform coordinator of any problems.
  • Help to track student progress and achievements.
  • Dress in a manner that is mindful of the culturally diverse students we serve.
  • Report time off to coordinator in a timely manner.
