Volunteer: Help Older Adults Stay Independent—Become a Volunteer Driver!

Losing the ability to drive can be a difficult turning point. For many older adults, it means new barriers to getting to medical appointments or handling everyday essentials like grocery shopping. We seek individuals who enjoy driving and, more importantly, helping others stay connected and engaged.

Our mission at Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors is to empower seniors to live healthy, independent, and socially engaged lives. Reliable transportation for medical appointments and grocery shopping is vital to making this possible.

As a Volunteer Driver, you will help seniors by providing rides to medical appointments and assisting with grocery pickup and delivery.

If you're 19 or older, have a good driving record, and own a safe, well-maintained vehicle, we encourage you to join us in supporting our local seniors. A background check and orientation will be provided for all new volunteers.

Volunteer: Help Make Household Tasks, Not Such a Chore!

Support Seniors in Their Homes—Volunteer with Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors!

At Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors, our mission is to empower individuals aged 60 and older to live healthy, independent, and socially connected lives. Part of this mission involves ensuring that seniors can continue living in safe, clean homes.

Would you consider giving just 1-2 days a month to help an older adult with everyday household tasks? This could involve taking out the trash, doing laundry, changing bed sheets, light dusting, or vacuuming. If you're able, you could also assist with heavier lifting or simple home repairs.

Your support would mean the world to someone who no longer has the strength or mobility to manage these tasks alone. We offer flexible scheduling, a welcoming and grateful community, and the opportunity to make a lasting difference in the lives of isolated seniors.

Qualifications: Volunteer one hour over your lunch time during the weekdays on a schedule that works for you. You must have your own transportation and license.

Where: Volunteers drive to the program site, pick up 8-10 meals stored in easy-to-carry thermal packs, and deliver them to residences using a route designed by the program. Eastside serves Meals on Wheels to the Minneapolis (Northeast, near Southeast) and St. Anthony Village areas. Delivery coordinators will provide all the necessary resources to limit the spread of disease during your route and keep both you and meal recipients safe.

**Delivering meals can fit into a work lunch break. It is also a great family-friendly volunteer opportunity so plan to bring your kids or grandkids!

For more information call their office at (612) 277-2529 or contact Bradley Van Winkle at bradley@eastsidemeals.org

Volunteer: Do you love Flowers and Gardening? We have indoor and outdoor opportunities!

Do you love getting your hands in the dirt and planting flowers, herbs, and vegetables? Our Episcopal Homes residents are looking for strong volunteers to help with the digging, kneeling and lifting to get their garden plots in ship shape for the growing season mid-May to mid-October. We are also looking for a volunteer to help with watering the pretty flowers at our courtyard and patio gardens with long-term care residents during the summer months.

If you prefer an indoor option, we would love a couple of volunteers to help with Friday afternoon preparation 3-5pm filling the vases with water and food. On Saturdays we are looking for a couple more substitute drivers to pick up Trader Joe's flower donation and deliver it to Episcopal Homes from 9-10:30am. Also on Saturdays, we need a few more co-leaders to help with the flower arranging and leading the other volunteers 9:30-11:30am. These lovely bouquets are then shared across the campus in our public spaces for all to enjoy!

Volunteer: Sewing Teachers & Teachers' Aides

Do you like to sew? Do you like talking about sewing and helping other people learn to sew? Do you want to do something concrete to support & build connection with African communities in the Twin Cities? Then you've gotta come hang out with us.

Under One Roof Fiber Arts provides free sewing classes to African immigrants in the Twin Cities. All of our classes are volunteer-run, and we are always looking for more people who want to share their sewing skills while hanging out with a bunch of cool women.

Okay but what does that actually mean?

We're looking for both Teachers & Teacher's Aides. We need both people who are comfortable leading a class and people who'd rather assist and help answer student questions. Scheduling is as flexible as you need it to be. We've got ongoing classes as well as one-time classes, so you can help out every Weds morning or you can teach a class once a month. We appreciate whatever time you're willing to donate. We just want to make it easy for you to come in and share your knowledge. All of our students are African immigrants and most speak English as a second (or third or fourth) language. Some are new arrivals who are still learning the basics.  It's okay if you don't have a ton of experience working with ESL students, but you do need to be open to working with people who are different from you and maybe learning new & better ways to communicate across language barriers. Unless you're also an African immigrant, then it probably won't be anything new (and you can totally both be a volunteer and also take a class if there's something that's a new skill for you).Really we're just trying to have fun and sew together, so if you've gotten this far, just send a message and let's figure out a way for you to get involved.

Volunteer: Knitting & Crochet Teachers & Teachers' Aides

Do you like to knit and/or crochet? (Are you some kind of magician who likes doing both?) Do you like showing other people how to do those things? Do you want to support and build connection with the African communities of the Twin Cities? Ooh do I have good news for you.

Under One Roof Fiber Arts provides free sewing/knitting/etc classes to African immigrants in the Twin Cities. All of our classes are volunteer-run, and we are always looking for more people who want to share their skills while hanging out with a bunch of cool women. You do not need to be an expert--we're really just trying to build community by sharing skills and making things together.

IMPORTANT! Right at this exact moment, we're only holding classes in St. Paul, but we're hoping to expand to satellite locations around the metro in 2026. So if you don't want to drive to St. Paul all the time but you do want to hang out and knit, send a message anyway and we can make some plans for the future.

Volunteer: Sort Fresh Food for Families at Today's Harvest - Free Food Market

Description

Powered by Open Cupboard, Today’s Harvest depends on the dedication of volunteers like you to serve families in need. This role is perfect if you’re looking for a hands-on, active, and fun way to give back to your community!

Today’s Harvest offers a fresh approach to food access. By rescuing food that might otherwise go to waste, we provide neighbors with a changing selection of fresh produce, bread, meat, and other staples. Each visit gives households a 1–2 day supply of nutritious food, helping families stretch their budgets. Guests are welcome to visit as often as needed.

Open six days a week, Today’s Harvest is a bustling market that simply wouldn’t run without the support of our amazing volunteers. From stocking shelves to greeting guests, there’s always meaningful work to do—and every shift makes a real difference.

Food Sorting Overview

Food sorting plays a vital role in ensuring that families who visit Today’s Harvest receive healthy, safe, and high-quality food—all while helping reduce food waste in our community.

Food sorting is the process of organizing and preparing rescued food so it’s safe, fresh, and ready to share with our community. When food donations arrive—often from grocery stores, food rescue partners, or community drives—volunteers help sort through the items to check for quality and safety.

This includes:

Separating food into categories such as produce, bread, meat, dairy, and dry goods.

Removing items that are spoiled, damaged, or unsafe to distribute.

Organizing market-ready food so it can be stocked quickly and efficiently.

Composting, garbage or recycling items when appropriate.

Requirements

Volunteers must be age 15 or older Must be able to stand for extended periods and lift 20 pounds Volunteers are required to wear close-toed shoes

Schedule

Mondays-Fridays: 10:00am - 12:00pm or 12:00 - 3:00pm

Locations

Volunteer: Make a Difference: Assist Residents with Wheelchairs at Onsite Worship Services

Sunday Service Volunteers

At Lyngblomsten, Spiritual Care Services are a cherished time for residents to gather in the Chapel for reflection, prayer, and fellowship. For many, this weekly service provides comfort, connection, and a sense of peace that enriches their emotional and spiritual well-being. However, most of our residents require assistance getting to and from the Chapel and this is where volunteers play an essential role.

We are seeking compassionate volunteers to help transport residents safely and comfortably to the Chapel each Sunday morning from 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Volunteers may assist by pushing wheelchairs, offering a steady arm for support, or simply providing friendly conversation along the way. This small act of service makes a tremendous difference—ensuring that every resident who wishes to attend has the opportunity to do so.

Volunteering in this way is more than just helping with transportation; it’s about building relationships and sharing moments of kindness. Many residents look forward to seeing familiar volunteer faces each week, and the sense of community that grows from these interactions is deeply meaningful. By giving just a little of your time on Sunday mornings, you can help bring joy, comfort, and connection to those who need it most.

We are looking for individuals who:

Approach interactions with kindness and understanding. Are committed to your scheduled shifts.

Time Commitment:

Regular weekly shifts available:Sundays: 10:00 AM - 11:30 AMOccasional opportunities to support special holiday services such as Maundy Thursday and Good Friday.

Reach out today for more information about Lyngblomsten's volunteer program! New volunteers will attend an orientation and complete a state-required background study with fingerprinting. There is no cost to you for this.

Volunteer: Pet Visitors for Episcopal Homes Elders

Do you have a friendly dog, cat, guinea pig, or rabbit that likes strangers and lots of petting?  Are you interested in sharing your special family member with elders 65+?  We would love to have you visit our Episcopal Homes residents in assisted living, memory care and long-term care (nursing homes).

You can commit to a weekly or month visit or one-time event.  The best time frame for visits is between 9:30-11:30am or 1-4pm; we suggest for a two-hour visit.

If you are coming to volunteer more than once, we request that you complete a Minnesota Department of Human Services background check and fingerprinting.  This allows you to volunteer independently, visiting residents in their apartments and rooms.

If you prefer a one-time visit, we will schedule a time when our staff member can be present with you and your pet in one of our community rooms.

To get started, please complete this volunteer application: https:episcopalhomes.org/foundation/volunteer

We will also request a copy of your pet's rabies vaccination before your visit.

Volunteer: Start a Meals on Wheels Workplace Delivery team!

Are you looking for a workplace volunteer opportunity that makes a huge impact on your community, is easy to implement and manage, and is something employees can do over the lunch hour? If so, delivering meals is the perfect volunteer opportunity for you and your co-workers!

It only takes a lunch hour to deliver meals to eight to 10 people in need. How’s that for a power lunch? Companies of all sizes across the Twin Cities have discovered Meals on Wheels as the perfect volunteer opportunity for their employees.

Why does it work?

• Volunteers deliver meals once a month, once a week, or on a custom schedule depending on the team size,

• Meals are delivered during the employees’ lunch hour with a co-worker or individually.

• Typically, no one employee is out of the office for more than 1 hour a month.

• As a volunteer experience, this allows for great corporate social responsibility with minimal cost.

What are the benefits?

• Builds exceptional employee morale, creates better employee communication, and promotes team building.

• Allows busy people to give back to the community without taking away evening and weekend time with their families.

• Companies are seen in the community as a partner to Meals on Wheels, a trusted and well-known organization

What are companies saying about the experience?

Daniel O’Keefe, Executive Vice President for Benfield, Inc. says, “At the expense of a few minutes of weekly contact, I have provided companionship and friendship to an elderly person who might otherwise feel much more alone than she does. In return, I have experienced a friendship with a very remarkable woman. For me, it’s a very great return for a very small price.”

WORKPLACE DELIVERY TEAMS: HOW DO THEY WORK?

What does a Workplace Delivery Team look like? A team consists of two or more individuals who agree to take turns delivering meals to seniors and people with disabilities. Volunteers can deliver in teams of two and may choose to do so once a month, or more often if it works for them. Teams can be easily scaled up to accommodate however many volunteers are interested.

How long does it take? The delivery takes about an hour. There are over 30 Meals on Wheels sites metro-wide, so the program site won’t be far away.

Who manages the process? Each Workplace Delivery Team picks one person to be the team leader. If needed, the position may be rotated within the group. This position may be filled with a community affairs employee or a volunteer.

What are the team leader’s responsibilities? The leader is responsible for maintaining a volunteer schedule and acts as the liaison between the company and the Meals on Wheels site.

What are the benefits? Volunteers will help eight to 10 individuals in need of nutritious meals and a human connection. Just knowing you’ve made a difference in someone’s life can be a tremendous reward. It’s a wonderful way to feel coming back from your lunch break!

Volunteer: PRISM - Marketplace Food Shelf Aide

Pre-COVID, the Marketplace Food Shelf utilized a “choice” model, meaning the participants were free to shop just as they do in a traditional grocery store by choosing exactly the food they need from the shelves within Food Shelf guidelines. Our current service delivery system is to ensure the safety and comfort of staff, volunteers, and participants, while serving participants at a larger volume and more frequently. Volunteers working in the Marketplace Food Shelf will perform a variety of duties including:

- Accept donations from the public, offer and provide the donor with a receipt if requested.

- Serve our participants with check-in/out (currently put on hold because of our current model due to COVID-19)

- Review and sort food donations for packaging issues and expiration dates compared to PRISM guidelines

- Review and sort through perishable items to ensure they are of good quality for our participants

- Assemble and prepare nonperishable boxes, ranging from 35-40 lbs.

Interested in hosting a group gear drive?

The Native American Community Clinic needs hats, scarves, gloves, snowpants, boots and coats - all ages and genders to provide to patients and our unsheltered relatives.  Also able to accept blankets, sweatshirts and sweaters.

Fundraising:

Art, Heart and Hoofbeats - Equine Rescue and Sanctuary is a non-profit 501(c)3 organization that runs entirely on donations. We are always on the look out for help in procuring monetary donations and sponsorship, both private and corporate. We also often need individuals to collect donations of goods and services for special events (for example, gift cards and items for silent auctions). We have also received many wonderful donations from clubs, groups, and individuals who have chosen to hold a “AHH Benefit” Event. Some ideas for this would be fun shows, tack sales, rummage sales, bake sales, or informational booths at local feed or tack stores. If you are interested in holding this sort of fundraiser to help the horses and people served at AHH, please let us know!

Volunteer: Lead Arts and Craft Classes for Older Adults

Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors offers a variety of classes and activities for older adults in the Longfellow and Seward neighborhoods of Minneapolis. We are looking for volunteers interested in leading craft or art skill classes.  Beginning watercolor, rock painting, Alcohol ink,  card crafting or simple clay projects are all popular with our community. But we would love to hear your ideas! Projects need to be assessable to all skill levels and provide options for students  who struggle with dexterity.

Classes can be single-session, or take the form of weekly or monthly programs. You provide the skills and talent and Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors provides the event space and program materials.

Volunteer: Food Shelf Deliveries to Older Adults

Longfellow/Seward Healthy Seniors (LSHS) and Minnehaha Food Shelf (located in the Minnehaha United Methodist Church, 3701 E. 31st St) joined forces back in August of 2020 with concern for older adults in the community who were unable to pick up their food shelf items in person due to the COVID pandemic.

LSHS continues to provide this food shelf delivery service to older adults in the greater Longfellow neighborhoods, and we are looking for  volunteers who can assist with this program on at least one Tuesday a month.

Volunteers will be asked to work alongside LSHS and Minnehaha Food Shelf staff to choose and pack needed items to be delivered.  The number of clients varies,  but there are no more than 2 delivery stops. This opportunity can be physically demanding, and there is some heavy lifting involved. However, we work as a team to lighten the load.

We are looking for volunteers who can commit to at least one Tuesday morning a month for 1.5 -2.0 hours.
