Volunteer: Youth Group Mentoring

The Youth Group Mentoring Program is a space where young people, in partnership with

supportive adults and with each other, build on their inherent strengths and capacity for

leadership. Adult volunteers commit to being in relationship with a small group of young

people in order to support their learning, exploration, and development. Mentors become part

of these young people’s network of support as they pursue personal and collective goals and

grow into active participants in civic and community life.

Mentor Role

Mentors will work in pairs with a small group of 3-5 young people between the ages of 12 and

18, with whom they will attend weekly programming. Exact programming dates are to be

determined, however, mentors commit to a relationship with their group September-June.

Mentors work together to support young people in the following ways:

* Build an ongoing supportive relationship by participating in both small- and large-group

activities with 3-5 young people in grades 7-12

* Facilitate conversations and activities with their mentees

Manage group dynamics to ensure that each young person has opportunities for growthand connection in a safe and supportive environment

Act as guide, cheerleader, and sounding board during projects, empowering youngpeople to take the lead in their own learning

Serve as a positive role model and friendRecognize and focus on the unique strengths of each menteeAttend bi-monthly outingsProvide transportation to field trips and group meetingsTake the lead on communicating with young people’s parents/guardians in order tocoordinate schedules and logistics related to programming

Time Commitment

* Attend weekly 90-minute sessions with a small group of adolescents, September

through June; mentors work in pairs and each mentor commits to missing no more than

three meetings in the program year.

Literacy volunteers work closely with children and families in Simpson’s housing programs to improve reading and academic skills through weekly tutoring specifically designed to meet the needs of each individual student, including improved academic performance, increased attendance, improved self-efficacy, and strong parental involvement in their child’s education.

The mission of Simpson’s Children and Youth Services programs is to break the generational cycle of homelessness by partnering with parents to support children’s academic success, stability, and well-being. Adults aged 21 and older are invited to become a tutor and make a positive and lasting impact in the life of a young person.

The Program

Simpson Housing Services has a high-quality, rigorous reading tutoring program for kindergarten through 6th grade students who are transitioning out of homelessness and participate in our Family Housing program. Seventy-five percent of children who are homeless are below grade level, and we know that if the learning gap does not diminish, the children will continue to struggle academically. The program’s goal is for each child to work up to grade-level reading and to foster a lifelong passion for learning.

Tutors are paired with a student for the school year and must commit to meeting with the student for one hour every week. Consistent and reliable support by tutors will provide consistency for the children. Simpson Housing Services staff will provide the curriculum, support, and coaching. An orientation to Simpson Housing Services and Tutor Training will take place in September. Topical trainings will also be offered throughout the year.

Timeframe

During the school year, tutoring will take place one night a week, Monday through Thursday between 4 pm and 6 pm. Tutors can choose the session that works best for their schedule.

Goal of Position 

Volunteer Prep Cooks assist the Shelter Kitchen Specialist prep food to serve to our emergency shelter guests. The shelter provides a safe and dignified space for 22 women and 44 men every night. We provide housing advocacy, healthcare services, toiletry and basic clothing supplies, showers, lockers, and three meals a day. Our goal is to help our shelter guests move into safe, affordable, and stable housing as soon as possible. 

 

Sample Volunteer Tasks 

Wash and chop ingredients according to recipe.  Wash dishes.  Contribute new recipe ideas to the menu.  Honed kitchen skills are not necessary, there are a variety of tasks at different skill levels to be completed. 

 

Timeframe

Tuesday through Saturday with a morning shift 9 am – 11 pm and an afternoon shift 1:30 pm – 4:30 pm   Shifts are posted in morning and afternoon slots. When there is not a volunteer group serving lunch, volunteers are invited to stay and serve lunch to guests.   Volunteers are required to commit 2 shifts a month. 

 

Qualifications 

Simpson Housing Services is looking for responsible, reliable, and respectful volunteers who can work comfortably in a commercial kitchen and communicate with people of diverse backgrounds.  Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age. 

 

Benefits 

The experience you gain as a volunteer will develop and hone skills that are useful in school, a career, and life. Working directly with a kitchen specialist, you will gain knowledge about kitchen tools, cooking for a large group, meal prepping, and menu planning. Upon your request, we will provide a letter of recommendation for school, work, or scholarship.  Volunteers gain a deeper appreciation for their lifestyle and enjoy a new network of people by meeting shelter staff and other volunteers.

Volunteer: Share the Warmth- Blanket Drive for a Minneapolis Homeless Shelter

Simpson Housing operates a shelter for homeless adults and housing programs for individuals and families moving into housing. Our goal is to provide every new guest that walks through our doors a new, clean blanket for their bed. We're running out of blankets and will need them for the coming winter months!

You can help by buying a new blanket during your regular shopping trip. You can also encourage your friends to do the same. We can accept new twin, full, and queen size blankets. Please no throw size blankets or baby blankets.

New blankets may be delivered by scheduling an appointment at:

Simpson Housing operates a shelter for homeless adults and housing programs for individuals and families moving into housing. Our goal is to provide every new guest that walks through our doors a new, clean blanket for their bed. We're running out of blankets and will need them for the coming winter months!

You can help by buying a new blanket during your regular shopping trip. You can also encourage your friends to do the same. We can accept new twin, full, and queen size blankets. Please no throw size blankets or baby blankets.

We serve 66 homeless adults in our shelter every night and about 95 cups of coffee. You can help by organizing a coffee drive!

If you're a coffee drinker, I know you appreciate how a hot cup can make you feel ready for your day. Shelter guests get up as early as 3 am to take several buses to get to work and coffee helps them out the door. Many of our guests drink a cup of decaf in the evening, hungry and waiting for dinner.

For non-coffee drinkers, we also can use tea bags and hot cocoa packets!

Although we purchase our coffee from a warehouse store, it still is a large expense. We brew both caffeinated and decaf and we would welcome any brand or size (must be ground).
