Volunteer: Pet Therapy Volunteer with Moments Hospice (Minnesota and Wisconsin)

Do you have a sweet dog that is pet therapy certified and want to share them with our elderly patients at the end of their life?  Not pet therapy certified yet?  We can give you some guidance on how to do that!

We visit patients wherever they call home (skilled nursing facilities, assisted livings, private homes, apartments). Volunteers are an integral part of the hospice team approach by providing a supportive presence to patients, engaging patients and their loved ones in life review and reminiscing, offering respite to allow caregivers a break, and so much more!

Come be part of something wonderful and walk alongside our patients throughout their end of life journey.

Volunteers can do some of the following:

Share a sweet pet therapy animal. Visit a Veteran. Read the paper or a book to a patient. Share hobbies. Play & listen to soothing music. Talk to patients. Bring flowers from a garden. Share photos. Just sit quietly and be the gift of presence for them.

The benefits of being a Moments Hospice Volunteer include:

Enhancing a volunteer’s sense of self-worth by befriending someone with great wisdom but a limited opportunity to share it. Giving the volunteer the opportunity to practice important skills used in the workplace, such as teamwork, communication, problem solving, project planning, task management, and organization. Meeting new people and gaining a different perspective on life.

Volunteer: In-Home Hospice Respite Volunteers (Minnesota and Wisconsin)

Are you searching for meaning and purpose in your life? Looking, perhaps, to pay-it-forward or, perhaps, use your skills and interests to make a real difference in someone's life?

Moments Hospice is looking for compassionate volunteers willing to donate their time to spend quality time with our hospice patients and their families, who are in homes, assisted livings or skilled nursing facilities throughout Wisconsin and Minnesota.

Moments Hospice needs volunteers to give the family respite by coming into the home and connecting with the patient. On any given day, our hospice volunteers may be out spending time with patients and families, perhaps in Minneapolis or St. Paul, Victoria or Woodbury, Farmington or North Branch.

Direct care volunteers offer companionship in a variety of ways -- perhaps reading aloud, sitting quietly, watching a movie, baking some cookies, playing a game, writing cards, feeding birds, folding some laundry, planting a window box, or saying prayers.

We have patients all over Minnesota: Minneapolis, St. Paul, Rochester, St. Cloud, Mankato, Brainerd, Duluth...and Wisconsin: Appleton, Madison, Milwaukee, La Crosse, Eau Claire, Hudson

You can volunteering within 30 minutes of your home or work location.

Volunteer: Hospice Patient-Visitor Volunteer (Minnesota and Wisconsin)

Do you have passion for supporting others?  Want to help our elders at the end of their life?  COVID-19 took a big toll on our community and particularly our hospice patients and contributed to increased isolation for many people. We are looking for caring individuals to provide companionship visits with our hospice patients in Minnesota and Wisconsin.  You can volunteer within 30 minutes of your home or work location.

Volunteer: Clouds In Water Board Member

Board of Directors Information

Nominees for the Clouds in Water Zen Center Board of Directors shall:

Have a strong interest in, and commitment to, the overall vision and goals of Clouds in Water Zen Center. We participate in all the activities associated with developing the vision. We volunteer to help the executive director and guiding teacher in executing goals. We promote the vision by talking about it with the larger community. When we have energy to work in specific areas, we embrace that. We don’t let working in specific areas put us out of touch with the center’s broader goals. We offer ideas to help realize the vision. Demonstrate commitment to ongoing spiritual practice within the sangha. We have participated in classes, retreats, sesshins, or receiving the precepts, either at Clouds in Water or in another Buddhist We see board service as spiritual practice, and we also continue our practice within the community’s forms to keep ourselves grounded during our service as board members. There will be times, however, when our organizational needs make it relevant for a board member to serve who is neither a member of the Clouds community, nor a Zen student. Demonstrate qualities of independence of thought and leadership. We initiate policies, not merely react to staff initiatives. If we are a student of a Clouds in Water teacher, we are able to manage the complexities of being a student while holding the teacher accountable for the performance of the organization. We keep ourselves informed on what makes excellence in governing and visibly challenge ourselves to learn and improve. Have the time and energy to perform Board duties. We show up for meetings and miss no more than three meetings per year (meetings are held each month, usually Sunday from 11 – 1, plus one day-long planning session). We arrive at meetings on time and prepared. We contribute our ideas and opinions and help keep meetings focused and effective. We follow through on the commitments we make to do things. We volunteer to do the work the Board needs to do, such as serving on committees and taking leadership on special projects. We make a one-to-three-year commitment to our service on the board. Average time commitment: 8 hours per month. Note: currently in this rebuilding phase in 2022, we are accepting members on the board who may only have time to prepare for and attend board meetings. Thus, the average time may be closer to 4 hours/month. Be interested in and capable of working with others to further the overall vision and goals of Clouds in Water. In addition to being good leaders, we are also good listeners and respond to the ideas of others with an open mind. We enjoy the close interaction and relationships with other board members and the knowledge that we are contributing to the cause and the success of Clouds in Water and the Dharma. Will be in agreement with the board that we live in a racist society and that Clouds in Water is a predominantly white institution working toward racial equity. We understand that to effectively dismantle the white supremacy that’s embedded as a matter of course in this society’s institutions we must be actively anti-racist. This is a process of ongoing education and continual work. There may be specific training organized for white and BIPOC board members to attend separately and/or together in order to better equip us in our sustained efforts toward racial equity. Will be in agreement that we live in a patriarchal society and that those who are not cis-male enter institutional spaces at a social disadvantage; often being condescended to, patronized, or presumed less competent. We understand that to effectively dismantle patriarchy we must actively promote and provide a platform for the voices of those marginalized by patriarchy and cissexism. This involves a conscious effort on the part of cis-males on the board to be aware of how much space they are taking up in dialogue, wait their turns to speak, receive the gift of constructive feedback and, when necessary, to give social priority to others. Will be in agreement that we live in a heteronormative society and that lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer, and asexual people have been historically marginalized and unwelcome in many institutions, especially religious ones. We understand that in order to be a true refuge we must actively dismantle heterosexism and divest from heterosexist assumptions. This includes noticing and not using heterosexist language or jokes that promote heteronormativity. We also offer our pronouns upon introduction, and we honor the pronouns of others. We are open to correction from our peers regarding pronouns and we offer the gift of correction freely. Be willing to be visible in the community, as in attending Sunday services and community events. We get to know community members, help educate them about our vision and activities, and invite them to participate actively with the community. We value the great diversity of our culture, including race, ethnicity, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, creed, religious background, ability, income, family status, and level of practice.

We intend that there be no exclusion from our community or its training opportunities on the basis of arbitrary cultural factors. When it becomes apparent that there is an issue, we will address it.

We place a high value on community as an expression of our interdependence.

Following the Bodhisattva way, we nourish a community with a shared commitment to conscious, wise and virtuous action for the benefit of all beings.

We value our inter-relatedness with communities of the larger world.

We understand that our Bodhisattva vow commits us to actions that benefit the common life of the larger community. This includes the neighborhoods we practice in, other Zen centers, and the civic communities of which we are a part.

We show up for services, councils, classes and Sangha events. (Note: This does not apply to board members recruited from outside the organization). Show leadership in fundraising. Participate in all aspects of fundraising in accordance with our financial circumstances, including contributing to and helping with all major fundraising activities. Volunteer: Vigil Volunteer

The vigil volunteer provides a supportive presence to dying patients and families when symptoms are under control. The vigil volunteer’s presence is a valuable gift. The vigil volunteer successfully completes vigil volunteer training in addition to friendly visitor training. The vigil volunteer training focuses on the needs of the dying patient and their family. The training includes signs of death and dying during the last hours of the patient’s life, as well as faith practice and cultural differences related to dying.

In hospice, one of the primary goals of care is to relieve a patient’s suffering. The vigil volunteer provides a supportive presence to actively dying patients and their families. When a patient faces the process of dying, coping skills can be taxed and suffering can ensue. Vigil volunteers and other hospice team members can help provide the patient with the most valuable gift - a loving presence.

Volunteer: Pet Visitor Volunteer & Petcare

Pet visitor volunteers assist with providing comfort and emotional support to patients and their families through therapeutic pet visits. There are two components to a pet visitor volunteer: the handler and the pet. It is most common that dogs are pet visitor volunteers; however, other pets (e.g., cats, miniature horses) may be considered pet volunteers as well. Animal–assisted interactions (which includes animal assisted activities or therapy) provide opportunities for motivational, educational, recreational and/or therapeutic benefits to enhance quality of life for patients and families. Animal-assisted interactions are delivered by specifically trained professionals, paraprofessionals, and/or volunteers in association with animals that meet specific criteria. These trained handlers have successfully completed an evaluation and training course that meets the requirements of an appropriate accrediting agency. Approved accrediting agencies include, Pet Partners, Project Canine, Therapy Dog’s International, or Alliance of Therapy Dogs. Other credentialing agencies are reviewed to ensure adherence to industry standards and approved by the volunteer coordinator. Documentation of credentialing is be kept in the handler’s personnel file in accordance with policy. Completion of a good citizen obedience program is not sufficient for pet utilization.

Volunteer: Bereavement Volunteer

THE MOST IMPORTANT NEED OF THE BEREAVED

Often, the bereaved need to be listened to and have feelings accepted and validated, and to make the journey through grief process at their own pace. It is not uncommon for well-meaning people, loved ones and strangers alike, to encourage the bereaved to be strong and to deny their pain by having an attitude of gratitude, or to believe that “moving on” can happen within days or weeks of the loss of a loved one. It has been said that this culture is uncomfortable with issues surrounding death. This may be because many are reluctant to accept the limitations that reality places on the ability to control one’s lives. For the bereaved, finding a person who will walk with them through grief and who can accept all the often-conflicting feelings without passing judgment is a priceless treasure. As a volunteer, the role is not to fix the grief, it is the privilege of being a companion, a facilitator, and a mirror of the healing process.
