Volunteer: Mentorship

Neighborhood Development Center (NDC) is a non-profit organization that offers training, lending, retail spaces and technical assistance to inner-city entrepreneurs in its targeted neighborhoods including, Saint Paul. Minneapolis and Brooklyn Park. NDC's mission is to improve neighborhood economies by developing the talents of micro-entrepreneurs within their own communities. NDC has trained more than 6,000 people to date (80% of whom are people of color.) We currently have nearly 700 alumni in business.

NDC is interested in finding volunteers to mentor some of our entrepreneurs who are in need of some guidance and encouragement. Mentors will connect with entrepreneurs for an agreed upon time period of up to one (1) year. Mentor and mentee will meet atleast once a month or more frequently if desired.

Mentors can choose to mentor 1-3 entrepreneurs based on capacity.

Employees must be innovative, possess creative problem-solving skills and be willing to tackle a wide variety of tasks. Successful employees will have a passion for social justice and an eagerness to engage in the communities where we work.   

Position Purpose:  

We are seeking an individual who is bilingual and open to cultural diversity to spend five-ten hours a month training business client in basic social media techniques. It will be your responsibility to teach the business(es) the basics of using social media platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, TikTok, etc. Also, assist with the creation of photos and other content using social media programs like Canva. In 2023, NDC was humbled to be named the administrator of the Minnesota PROMISE Act Grants Program for the Twin Cities. The PROMISE Act Grants Program will deliver grants to businesses in North Minneapolis, South Minneapolis, and St. Paul that have been adversely affected by structural racial discrimination, civil unrest, and lack of access to capital. Summary

This role involves working with PROMISE Act applicants to provide direct application support. This support will take place at in-person application labs and includes checking financial documents, reviewing banking information, and ensuring that grant applications meet program requirements.    This role requires the volunteer to be available at least twice per month for in-person application labs. This position will require 6 hours per month for 4 months.

Key responsibilities include:

o   Maintain excellent data privacy and document security

o   Verifying the identity of the applicant you work with to ensure data privacy

o   Assist applicants with questions about the application process or information

o   Provide support with scanning and printing documents

o   Provide technical support for applicants working on their mobile phone

o   Provide recommendations for applicants to receive additional cultural or language support as applicable

o   Keep detailed and accurate records of businesses and applicants for reporting and invoicing purposes

o   Attend required training sessions and meetings

o   Stay connected with the TA Coordinator and provide updates as needed ( Weekly on Wednesdays at 12:30pm would be preferable).
