Who We Are

The Loft began in 1974 as a grassroots group of poets, hosting readings and teaching classes in a room above a Minneapolis bookstore. In 2000, The Loft, alongside founding partners Milkweed Editions and the Minnesota Center for Book Arts, moved into Open Book - a three-story building on Washington Avenue in Minneapolis that has since become the Twin Cities’ premier home for literary arts. Today, the Loft is a nationally recognized leader in the literary arts field, known for building vibrant literary community through high quality, relevant programming.

What We Do

The Loft advances the power of writers and readers to craft and share stories, to create and celebrate connections, and to build just, life-sustaining communities. Annually, the Loft offers hundreds of classes, awards and grants for writers, readings and events, major festivals and conferences, and other resources for readers and writers.
